Norwegian BREAKAPART!! (from on board the 5/19 sailing)

If I hadn't read about it here I would have never known! We didn't feel nearly as much movement as we have on some other sailings - sailing thru a hurricane on Carnival was about the worst I can remember, but we have had much worse movement on a few other sailings. Must be the size of the ship, I was all over deck seven and eight all day, and while there was some movement, it didn't seem too bad to me at all! The wind was brutal, though, and the wash on the port side was pretty bad, I can only imagine how bad starboard must have been! after reading Joeski's post, I did check the port side M6 balconies several times, they remained intact yesterday, last night, and this morning... (We were directly overhead of them). Not the nicest sea days for sure! Vibe was closed for two of six days, and only partly usable on a third. There definitely was a nasty smell aft last night, we had dinner in Moderno's, the smell was awful outside the restaurant, and there was some rocking, but had no problem with dinner..

My "missed step" occurred on the glass stairway - almost went down half the steps! My own fault as well, was paying too much attention to the photographers taking family pictures on the stairs and wondering how I was going to get by to my family waiting at the bottom.. Be careful on those stairs - the depth varies by step! Mine is pretty minor, a re-sprain of an ankle I had done a few years ago, but recovering much more quickly this time - able to put most of my weight on it today.. :)

So sorry about your ankle too Robin. Interesting to hear that things weren't so bad up top. I have the DOS booked and worried that it must have been really bad, but it sounds like it wasn't.

Look forward to hearing how your trip was and how the casino treated you :)

WOW. Those are some crazy pictures considering the age of the ship. Well- the old adage of a chain being only as strong as its weakest link holds true. Plastic being held with a single screw onto one pole.... Also have a concern about flammability issues but that HAS to have been addressed.... Right?

You know as I am writing the review I typed the same thing, that glass stairway is dangerous. I can see a few people having issues with that in the future.

Yeah mine was the regular stairway, I think forward. All I can think happened was the rubber heel of my left shoe caught the very grippy edge of the step below, which caused my next step (with my right foot) to immediately drop down about 2 steps and I planted the side of my foot/turned ankle with all my falling weight. Like I said while I've been able to "walk" on it I clearly remember feeling a snap or pop, which I'm assuming was a ligament. Swelling has gone down but the ankle is laughably unstable, probably turned it mildly about 4 or 5 times during debarkation and the trip home. Anyways I am still fuming at myself, because now I'll get to see your review and its as if I wasn't even on the ship or island. I even missed the damn fireworks! Oh and didn't even get a chance to try Carlo's sweets. :( Sucks!

Well, Joe, look at it this way: You'll certainly never forget this trip.

Thanks for sharing... and for risking your neck taking those pictures! Geez, a wave coulda swept you away (the sea looks rough even in those pictures!) or another piece of the ship could have become airborne and taken you with it like Aladin's magic carpet!

Richard/Tralfie

PS: Increasingly glad my TA switched me to an aft-facing balcony for my many-months-away voyage!

Wow! So sorry to hear about your ankle Joeski. I did the same thing a few years ago on my one and only trip to Europe; I was seriously annoyed at myself (and the world in general) for quite a while. Like you, I stubbornly hobbled around enough to seriously delay recovery.

Your pictures are awesome -- if not quite what I expected the first close-up pictures of an M6 balcony to look like. The whole storm sounds quite exciting, from my stable vantage point on land of course. I'd probably feel differently about it from an M6 cabin. ;)

With the benefit of hindsight, looking at one of your pictures (the one looking aft from your balcony), those outer panels on the dividers don't look like anything that belongs on a ship; they look more like sails than anything structural. It's almost hard to believe they were deliberately designed and built that way.

Damn, I really feel for you. Getting hurt aboard a cruise is a big fear of mine, so sorry that happened to you. All the time I was thinking, well at least we got some good days of weather and I though u would be happy about that. I also pictured you in horseshoe bay, that really blows :-/.

I was on the same sailing, and as someone else said, I wouldn't have known about this until I read it here. Our BD aft was great, and while we mostly skipped using the balcony Saturday, we were out there for a while, and it was quite windy and cold. The dividers were fine though.

I did smell the sewage smell at the aft that someone mentioned. Sky has the same issue, I wonder if it's a similar problem?

I agree 100%, The New York Bermuda route is known to have rough seas and high winds, this is perhaps extreme, but you cannot expect compensation for weather issues.

Yeah actually we noticed this as well, in the aft elevator area and in the hall all the way forward on deck 8, just down the hall from our cabin.

Ok...that's disgusting!

Omgosh! I've wondered about those glass steps!! I can't believe the depth varies A. on a cruise ship, B. with those curves, And C. GLASS STEPS THAT YOU CAN SEE THROUGH!!!! Glad you're ok.

On another note, I was in your neighborhood yesterday. Were you able to see the fireworks to welcome you home?

same thing would happen in your house if the trap went dry, or in a motor home while driving. Water in the system keeps gasses from escaping. When things get sloshing around, gaps form where the gasses can escape. There are other designs to keep this from happening, but they tend to be prohibitively expensive to implement on a large scale (e.g. high pressure systems)

I was so happy to hear that our fireworks had been moved to last night so I wouldn't miss them, but then I DID miss them. We usually watch them from our house or nearby, but when we heard that they would be more "ground" fireworks (due to beach loss from Sandy) we decided to just stay home and listen to them with the dogs (my daughter's dog has just moved in here and we weren't sure how she would react to the noise). Not sure I could have even pedaled a bike to the beach last night, I was sooo tired! Ended up going to bed right afterwards, and that was AFTeR a three plus hour nap in the afternoon! :D.

Did you get to see them???

Ps - those stairs are really dangerous! To make it worse, they were constantly posing families on the bottom steps for photos, and its very distracting, trying to avoid being in others' photos. I found I really had to pay attention whenever using them (which was often due to their location) and I still fell! It's strange that Joeski also had an ankle injury, plus I met two others on board who had similarly problems, all on stairs!!

We left Manasquan before it got dark. We originally planned on Staying on Point Pleasant (my MIL says we can see Manasquan fireworks from their house) but, we left mostly because of the cooler weather. We just wanted to get home. Glad we did...might not have been able to see them anyway!!!

Sorry to hear about your ankle too, Robin. Thanks for the head up on that staircase. Hope you still had a great cruise!:)

Where are these "glass stairs"? I'll try to avoid them as much as possible.

They are center ship, going from deck 6 (where Le Bistro, Headliners, and I think the Cust Service desk is) up to deck 7 (mid-casino). They curve in a part circle, and are lit up, and are the "centerpiece" of the open area along with the chandelier. Beautiful, yes! Practical, not really! I really liked the "escalator" on the Epic, but it wasn't nearly as beautiful.. I found the step "lighting" distracting as well, might be difficult for people with vision issues worse than mine (I'm just a little "light blind") - found it affected my depth perception, especially going down them.. It didn't stop me from using them, but I was just extra, extra careful - I just knew I would tumble down them at some point lol! :o

From the pictures, they are at the atrium.

Thanks; I'll make sure I'm careful on them and any other stairs I take. Reading of the different depths of the steps scares me. Two years ago I missed a step on a cruise and the last few days were really tough walking the long hallways.:(

Sorry that you both had ankle injuries and wish you both speedy healing. Hubby and I are sailing on the 6/9, and a few days ago when my hubby got out of his car at work tripped on a curb, fell, and now is toting a fractured left knee and right foot :( Fortunately he did not need casts or surgery, and insists we still go on the cruise and says he will manage with his cane and immobilizers. Definitely will be keeping him off those stairs!!!

Wow, thanks for the heads up! My DH has some visions issues and with his neuropathy, we have to ensure he is extra careful going up and down those stairs. he will be such a baby if he sprains an ankle. :D

Hope your ankle is much better as well as joeski27's.
