2 hr layover time returning from Europe. What do you think

This is a follow up to a previous question regarding our first trip to Europe in the Spring of 2014.

On our return to the U.S. we will be flying out of Dublin Ireland. Looking at current flight schedules for a idea on what type of connection could expect, I identified the following airports that may encounter on our return to the US and wanted to get your opinion if a minimum 2 hour layover time would be sufficient to get through customs, and make way to connecting flight to Jacksonville Fla.

The list of possible airports are:

Atlanta,

JFK,

Newark

We have never flown internationally and thus have no experience with going through customs when reentering the U.S.

Thanks,

Jeff:p

Dublin happens to be one of a very small number of cities outside North America where you'll actually go through US border controls (immigration and customs) before getting on your plane. As a result, your flight will be treated as a domestic flight on arrival in the US, so the transit times necessary at any of those airports will NOT be constrained by allowances for immigration and customs.

From any other European airport, two hours wouldn't be enough (or very border-line) at any US port of entry; however when arriving from DUB it will be more than adequate.

Thanks for the info. That is surely going to make less stressful once landing in the U.S. and making way to a connecting flight!

Again Thank you for sharing this info

Yes, you can pre clear both customs and immigration at Dublin :D

It is a great time saver for onward connections in the US.

If you use Aerlingus to JFK you arrive in T5 (Jet blue terminal) very good for connecting to Jet Blue domestic flights.

We live outside JAX but often go down to Orlando to fly here and there. We have flown Aer Lingus from there to Ireland to tour. For Orlando, we did get to use the US customs thing in Dublin which was nice. Because we liked Aer Lingus, we used them again for a flight to Eastern Europe through JFK (we were visiting family and drove to NY). When we used JFK, they did not use the US customs in Ireland. JFK customs was ok but luggage pick up took forever. In Atlanta the year before that, coming off a flight from Europe (not from Dublin), we had to go through security again after customs which would cut the time to make a connection if busy.

The US customs is not available after a certain hour in Dublin so you need to know what time the flight to Atlanta or especially JFK leaves to know if you will pass customs in time for a connection to JAX. Still another time through JFK with just carry-on, we made a Jet Blue flight to JAX from T5 even with a very short connection time so the advice above it correct.

According to Aer Lingus, all of their flights to JFK can now use pre-clearance in Dublin, as of 3 April 2013

In the same link, they say the only flights of theirs that do not clear in Dublin are 2x daily to BOS, and 1x daily to ORD

And I might add, Dublin has the most friendly group in immigration and customs of anyplace EVER! It was very nice to have this handled there.
