In many churches, including St. Peter's, you must have shoulders and knees covered or you will be denied admittance.

If you are going to churches or mosques on your tour, you will often be denied admittance if you are wearing shorts.

If you are going in the summer months it will be hot in southern France and Italy, so you need to wear a sunhat and if you are wearing a top with short sleeves it may be wise to have a wrap to cover up from the sun.

 

As already said, visiting churches normally requires long trousers or a skirt. I personally think skirts are much cooler to wear in a hot climate.

The exceptions are the churches.

 

What you might wear is dependent on what time of year you are traveling.

I would expect a ship excursion to say something in the description if there were restrictions on clothes.

Kirk has it right. Usually the cruise lines will note in the writeup for each tour comments about attire if applicable.

If there is no mention of clothing requirements it would be a red flag for me that the tour probably does not include going inside the major churches.

I agree it should be in your tour description....but apparently some folks do not read them very closely.

 

On my most recent cruise, a young woman (early 20s) wore very short shorts on a tour in Croatia. She missed out on going into a lovely museum of icons (part of a nunnery and run by nuns) and a church on this particular tour. She wasn't very happy about it.
