HAL still allow smoking in rooms and balconies?

Recommended Posts

Sadly smoking is still permitted on HAL verandahs but happily not in cabins.

Of course, all that does is save them the work to get smoke smell out of cabins but it subjects neighboring verandahs to the misery of second hand smoke.

I`m a non smoker with asthma. On my upcoming cruise out of Boston I have booked a veranda cabin and may visit Boston for two days precruise. Are the traffic congested streets of Boston more or less hazardous to my breathing than the veranda? Perhaps I`ll just fly in on cruise morning and avoid the pollution.

I must say our last cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam was the most smoke free we have ever had on HAL. Never smelled smoke on our balcony and the casino had much less smoking and the Crows Nest was noticeably better smelling. Given this was in Europe were it seems like everyone smokes, we were pleasantly surprised.

We were in Boston for the marathon this past April, so it was probably one of the most congested times to be in the city, and we didn't notice much traffic at all. The public transportation is soooooo efficient most people just take that. $18 gets you an unlimited use pass for a week (we were there 4 days and used the heck out of our passes SO worth the money!). It is a beautiful city and I highly recommend that you do visit for a few days at least. I love Boston and can't wait to go back. I've even been trying to get hubby interested in moving. ROFL It'll never happen.

On second thought. You might not have been serious. My answer still stands, though, in case anyone really was curious. . .

In the event you are serious........ :D

Maasdam sails on Saturday. There won't be nearly the traffic you'd find on a weekday. Breath easy.

Used to cruise a lot on HAL but the smoking just got to us. We are very sensitive to smoke.

Do they still allow it?

Yes, the same policy as when you cruised with HAL last year. Considering you had smokers on both sides of your cabin on the Oosterdam, you may want to stay with Celebrity.

Yes -- HAL still allows smoking on the verandahs -- cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking.

But no smoking in the cabins.

Maybe you will be lucky and the people on both sides of you will be non-smokers.

Or Princess, Oceania, Azamara, etc etc.

I was just aboard the Eurodam for 10 Days in the Baltic this July. It was an excellent cruise. I had a balcony (I usually book inside but the upgrade fairy was amazing to me ... first time in a long time, and the first time to jump from an inside all the way up to a verandah) but, even though I tried and tried and tried, I just couldn't smell any smoke from any kind of smoking on the verandahs to either side / above or bellow. There is, of course, no smoking allowed inside cabins ... but, I'm sure some people break that rule. I did pass a couple of cabins on the port side of the ship that seemed to always have a lingering odor of smoke outside their doors, so someone might have been smoking inside and paying the fine.

I noticed there were no-smoking signs in a large area of the casino, while smoking was permitted in another area. It didn't seem like nearly as many people were smoking in there as I've seen in the past ... I didn't notice any great, big, billowing clouds of smoke making the light hazy. Indeed, I hardly ever even whiffed the odor while passing through on my way to the Piano Bar or the Mainstage Show Lounge.

The aft outdoors smoking area (just abaft the Lido Restaurant on the starboard side) tended to have a lot of people in it, smoking, nearly all the time. Thankfully, the weather was nearly perfect all but the first sea day (when we had such high winds that exterior decks were closed off).

I was pleasantly surprised that, for a European cruise, there didn't seem (to me, at least) to be that many heavy smokers aboard. Of course, one's milage will vary depending upon where one is aboard ship and the cruise itself. Nevertheless, it's not a given that one will always have smokers on the verandahs around yours. So, take heart and be hopeful.

Do you know if any provision was made for smokers when exterior decks were closed off?

If it was a sea day, the casino likely was open.

If one is gambling, they can smoke in the casino.

Of course, Rev Greg would be the one to confirm whether that was the case on his cruise.

Hi Greg,

Good to see you here. You've been missed.

You make a good point about not every cruise will there be smokers on either side of the unlucky non-smoking verandah dweller. We've had some cruises where neither our to the right or left side were smokers nor were we bothered by smoke from verandah below as has happened in the past.

Some cruises the smoke is awful, sometimes it is bearable and sometimes we are chased inside away from our verandah pretty much the whole cruise.
