Rare rafinmd Posted August 17, 2013 #27 Share Posted August 17, 2013 No fire - engine problems - see CC new story from Aug. 13.http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=5481 Celebrity did a great job of taking care of passengers on board. Compare what Celebrity did to what HAL is planning to do for passengers on cruises displaced by upcoming Prinsendam repairs. http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=5488 There's a big difference between a sudden failure at the cruise terminal and a drydock planned with 2 months notice. It seems to me when the Prinsendam was delayed in Amsterdam passengers were treated much the same while the ship was in port. Housing them on a ship in drydock would be both a logistical and security nightmare. Roy
Himself Posted August 17, 2013 #28 Share Posted August 17, 2013 I think this is correct. I've seen nothing about any current fire' date=' and Millennium just arrived in Vancouver today.[/quote'] Sorry to hear of the fire. Glad no one was hurt. Wakepatrol Posted August 17, 2013 #29 Share Posted August 17, 2013 Fortunately, my original post was informational only from the news report on CKNW Vancouver. No drama, no huge bolded letters , and no zillion exclamation marks accompanying it. Does informational mean wrong?

boaterette Posted August 17, 2013 #31 Share Posted August 17, 2013 Since any fire is so dangerous, I never could understand how they could allow smoking. I know. It is just amazing how cigarettes can cause an electrical fire.
lovetocruiserccl Posted August 17, 2013 #32 Share Posted August 17, 2013 There we go with the smoking. Why not ask..Why would they allow painting, cooking, cleaning, serving alcohol, repairing the ship, dropping the anchor, refueling the ship and I can name many more actions that can start a fire on a ship besides a cigarette. Can we safely assume you mean August? :) Sorry -- my spinal epidural left me foggy yesterday. They left Texas on Thursday August 15 to get on the ship Friday, August 16. chrispb Posted August 17, 2013 #36 Share Posted August 17, 2013 I know. It is just amazing how cigarettes can cause an electrical fire. It's a rule!! Any fire on any ship is caused by a smoker and a discarded cigarette:D:cool:
startwin Posted August 17, 2013 Author #37 Share Posted August 17, 2013 It's a rule!! Any fire on any ship is caused by a smoker and a discarded cigarette:D:cool: I so shouldn't go here, but..... "where there's smoke there's fire" Seriously, I expect most passengers have an underlying nervousness about being in a confined environment with little escape when they have seen what a careless smoker can cause. chrispb Posted August 17, 2013 #38 Share Posted August 17, 2013 C'mon now. As an ex-smoker, how many fires did you start? The majority of fires both ashore and on ship are not caused by smokers.

Typhoon1 Posted August 17, 2013 #43 Share Posted August 17, 2013 Thank you both for giving us the true story and the links. These make more sense than a fire a week ago on another cruise ship and no media reporting of it. So glad the Passengers were treated so well:) Joanie I think whether of not a fire gets reported by the media may depend on how slow the news cycle is at any given time. It looks like outbreaks of Noro are finally going unreported.

Roy Roy I agree with you..There is a big difference..The HAL Psgrs have been given a two month advance warning & can change their vacations..The Celebrity Psgrs are now on the cruise & are locked in.. IMO both Celebrity & HAL are taking good care of their Psgrs.. BTW I believe it was Kirk who mentioned "Burning Cold" by H.Paul Jeffers' date=' which was about the original Prinsendam which caught fire off the coast of Alaska & sank in 1980..It was considered the greatest sea rescue of all time..I read the book, one of the most riveting & scariest books I've ever read..:eek:[/size'] Cheers...Betty

RedmondCruiser Posted August 18, 2013 #49 Share Posted August 18, 2013 On the Celebrity board it states that they gave passengers a 100% refund on the cruise and 50% future credit. That is if they decided to get off the ship. If they stayed on then they were offered 100% refund and 100% future credit. A classy move on the part of Celebrity. Kentchikan Posted August 18, 2013 #50 Share Posted August 18, 2013 Yes fire on a ship is very scary, sounds like no injuries? Go read Burning Cold if you want to see how bad a fire can be, it was the original Prinsendam which caught fire in 1980 in the Gulf of Alaska. Amazingly no one died and there were only a handful of injuries and everyone had to abandon ship . I wouldn't read it while on board. When sailing I always put books on my Kindle that take place on ships. One book was about a group overtaking the ship with help from the crew. I knew it was fiction but I still looked at everyone suspiciously. :D
