What can shipboard credit be used for?

I have a very pretty necklace as a souvenir of a cruise two years ago. Perhaps I will get a watch this time. Hmm. Then there is that excursion that I thought looked like fun but was so ridiculously expensive. There is no such thing as too much OBC!!!

Thank you all for the reminders. Not being drinkers and having everything already paid for, including tours, did not know what we would spend our OBC on but now have lots of ideas. Many thanks fellow cruisers!

 

For future reference, if you often have a large OBC, don't book your tours until you board and then your OBC can be used for this (unless it is one of those limited tours, then you should book it ASAP).

Depends where the credit came from

If from the cruise line either directly from a promotion or the TA as an incentive it is use it or lose it

 

If it was a gift from someone you get a refund in cash

 

 

Is this 100% correct??

 

In past if my TA gave OBC as part as THEIR rebate and you did not use this -- you could take this as cash back at end of cruise.

 

If if came from Oceania -- you stuck -- spend or lose.

Iam assuming from your post, Paulchili, that OBC's cannot be used for excursions booked in advance. I was thinking of booking a spa day in advance to get a good time on a sea day. Would this not work for OBC's either?

Guess I was not clear I knew what I meant ;)

 

My understanding is that

 

TA's get points or incentives from the cruise line & pass on to thier clients ..technically it is from the cruise line

 

If the TA gives you an OBC out of their pocket so to speak you can get cash back

 

It will usually have on your final invoice any credits & if they are non refundable or not

If you are not sure ask your TA for clarification

 

 

Someone will correct me if I am wrong

 

We usually spend all we get :)

You are most welcome.

I cannot speak to the spa as I have never used it. In general, anything you book in advance and have to pay for it at the time of booking is not chargeable to your OBC.

Tours can be booked and paid for in advance and then cancelled (if cancelled in time) onboard and you eventually receive the credit to your CC; you can then try to book it with your OBC if the tour is still available (and there is no waitlist). This is usually not worth the trouble.

I do not know about spa bookings - I am sure someone here will let you know.

Does anyone know if the shops stock Estée Lauder make up or Channel perfume? These are often good value for us UK folks. I need to decide whether to purchase at airport or wait and see if they are available on board.

 

Yes, I bought Channel perfume and cologne on board.

Can you buy Euros or other foreign currency on board and use your shipboard credit?

There are several categories for OBCs. One category is refundable or not. I believe they have started marking what type where they are listed on your invoice/statement before you leave. At the Reception desk on board they can tell you as well.

 

If it is refundable then you can draw down on that for cash and that would be used to purchase foreign currency. Same for getting cash to use in the Casino

 

Note that another important category is 'use it or lose it. A non-refundable OBC is usually in that category so it cannot be carried forward to another cruise, I believe B2B excepted.

 

But being as any OBC is a credit on your shipboard account, it is applied against any charges including the automatic gratuities so you don't necessarily have to spend it in the Spa, etc

If you are on BTB cruise and you have credits for both legs can you use the combined credits at the end of the second cruise ??

They have done so in the past whatever we do not use on the 1st leg is carried over but our last B2B was a few yrs ago things may have changed

 

I hope not we have a B2B in our near future

Never! Once your alcohol is paid for, one final trip to the boutiques can wipe out the largest OBC. Excursions alone could easily use it up.

Silliness aside, if it comes down to "use it or lose it", I expect your wife will enjoy treating herself to something that she would never buy for herself otherwise. I myself am the proud owner of a lovely necklace that I purchased with the "leftover" credit from our last Oceania cruise.:) Every time I wear it I recall my glee in discovering that it cost within $5 of my remaining funny money.

When were you able to buy Chanel on board. It is the only perfume I buy and have not been able to get it on board since 2009. Regatta had Chanel No. 5 & 19 in 2009 but I was not able to buy it on Insignia in 2010, Marina in 2011 nor Riviera in 2012 & 2013. Hoping you can tell me it has been on Riviera recently as I am on Riviera again in January 2014 then Marina in May & Riviera again in June 2014.:) Might have to get my crew member friend to check it out for me....just in case they have it. At least I would then know what I can spend all my OBC on.
