RCI gives solos double points; will Celebrity do so soon?

Reading the comments on this thread may provide some insight into why Celebrity appears to be taking so long to announce a new program. Most seem to advocate the position that appears to help them the most. Celebrity also wants to develop a program that will help them the most. I would suggest that their concerns trump any individual concerns expressed by posters since they need to produce results for their stockholders. Their jobs are at stake. Posters seem more focused on how points are calculated and coupons. Posters always have the freedom to cruise Celebrity or not. The debate is interesting, but will become moot if and when a new program is announced.

Since cruise points are not transferable, I am okay with not getting extra points when I solo.

However, in paying 200%, I'd like to have a second set of elite coupons. I use the 90-minute internet and the complimentary laundry.

And when I solo, I’d like to see paying 150%-175% since I don’t eat double the food!

I'll add one more comment: When I was on the Silhouette last fall ( 1 December TA cruise), I soloed. During the Elite breakfast in the Tuscan Grill one morning , I saw the Captain's Club hostess walking around with Elite coupons (full elite sheets).

I asked her if it was possible to get a second set since I was solo and she said no. Yet, she was passing them out others during breakfast.

Even if she had given you a second set of coupons, they might not have worked. The bookkeeping office would see that you already had one Internet 90 minute free offer, and would have denied the second one. You might have gotten a second free laundry order done, but might not have, for the same reason.

To be sure, they don't seem to notice the casino $5 match play coupons if you happen to garner extras from non-gambling friends, same with the bingo coupons.

Until they officially give solo travelers two sets of coupons, there probably isn't a way to get 180 minutes of Internet.

Then why would she pass them out to other passengers if you say they might not have worked?

You only see what you see. There have been times when there were some problems with the distribution of coupons. This has happened to me when coupons were not in my cabin and I informed the Hostess (not on Silhouette) of the omission. She told me that she would give me a set for me and one for my wife. As I wanted to get to the internet ASAP I went down to her office to get them. Perhaps this is what you were seeing. Don't know for a fact since I wasn't there, but a possibility.

One idea comes to mind -- perhaps due to some sort of snafu they never got their first set. That has happened to me, where I arrived to my stateroom and found no coupons and had to get them from the Host later.

Another possibility is that they had been given Select coupons in error and she was making it right.

Good observation. I always need to use Internet coupons in two names, mine and my wife. I once made the mistake of placing my name on both and was told that there would be a problem. Anyone can use the minutes once they are posted.

Also possible guests were given the silver coupons when they should have had the gold set and they were fixing that error.

I always smile when people say solos spend less money on board than couples. Some may do but I know my bill is far higher than many couples I have travelled with and I have paid a LOT for my solo cabin, so IMHO I deserve the double points and really hope X follows RCI with this.

I have an aft cabin booked on Millie next year which is costing me £££ - I'm happy (:-/) with that as I have no choice (no friends or family are interested in Alaska!) but the extra points would be a great bonus.

Stary Eyes, I already see the other side, and it is simple; a solo should not have to pay the same amount for a cabin as a couple. However, I can also see the position of the cruise line, which is not a charity, but a business with obligations to its stockholders etc. Perhaps, the best solution would a permanent reduction in the fares for solos, maybe at 175%.

I don't mind paying....just give me my point!!!!!!!!

for me it matters, because I am Select after six cruises with Celebrity all in my own cabin paying double fair. So in theory I could already be Elite, with 12 points.

A Carribean Cruise at $999 per person...I pay over $2000.00. The only break is that I don't pay the taxes and port charges for the Phantom in my room. All I have ever asked for is my extra point....and I have made this point many times regarding all of the cruiselines./ Princess was the first to start awarding the extra point, followed by Royal...it is only a matter of time now.......

I always laugh when people say couples spend more than solos on board as well......

My bill is probably double or triple most couples.........

Double points also means that a single can reach Elite level in half the time. Perfectly fine with me, but I don't know how Celebrity would feel about the added cost. Now a formula that would convert points to days and factor in total spending by adding days at particular spending points would handle that problem and would reward people who spend more whether single or not. That might serve to enhance the bottom line by encouraging customers to spend more. Not for us to decide since it's Celebrity's program and they can do whatever they want to do.

Although I do not cruise solo I think you are correct unless Celebrity does not really want Solo cruisers. I would think Celebrity would want to be competitive although it is probably a small market.

I am hoping the Celebrity significantly reduces the solo surcharge, so my DW and I can book two connecting cabins and have two bathrooms.

I don't have the stats on how small or large the market is but I have met several solo cruisers on every solo cruise I've taken.

They are undoubtedly aware that if they give a significant reduction for single bookings, they will have many couples wanting to do that.

With this reasoning should they give credits for paying for cruises for others?

What an interesting concept!

But if they allowed that, there would be no end to people working the system to their own advantage.

Groups of friends or family members traveling together could have the newest members "pay" for the others and amass enough credits to become elite at the end of their very first cruise.

On roll calls, elite members would be bombarded with offers from their new best friends. :D
