Kids without aduts on ship

If they do escort the kids back then we may not mind grandson attending if it is a sea day the next day, but don't like the idea of him coming back to the cabin alone at that time of night.

Oh most certainly. I don’t blame you. And I got all of that straight when I went to sign him up, because there is just no way I was going to let him come back to the room by himself. That was simply out of the question. So I asked if we needed to pick him up and they stated they would bring him back and that someone had to be in the room. They also asked for his sign & sail card. I wound up seeing the kids by the ice cream area maybe around 12:30. My sister and I were all the way aft watching the ship pull out of Nassau. He saw us and made a face like “please don’t come over here!”:p The counselors were with the kids the whole time.

I loved just about everything to do with Camp Carnival. But I do think the older the kids get, the less structured and organized the programs are. I don’t know how we'll handle things once they become teenagers. I’ll figure it out then.

My daughter is 9, she has a bedtime of 8:30, we enforce it as well on ship. We tend to get a bowl of ice cream before bed, then back to the room for bed or homework ( if she has some from school). I stay in the room and read with a booklight another hour before I go to sleep ( the wife goes out to shows). I have laid in bed and heard kids yelling down the halls all hours.

During the day, I have seen kids as young as 6 or 7 wandering by themselves, often groups of kids 8-12 playing in hot tubs for hours on end, never a parent near. I think it would be wise for Carnival to have a strong curfew for those under 16, say 10PM or so.

Kids under 16 roaming the ship alone is one of the worst things I see on the ships.

Mine also has an 8:30 curfew at home but on vacation we let her stay up as long as she is with us

Wasn't there a song called " the freaks come out at night" back in the 80's

Yep, not only the freaks come out at night but the freak in some of us. Waking up and thinking, why did I think that was a good idea last night. Kids should be protected and a curfew is a first step.

Except for my dh, everyone is up later than usual, but strict guidelines for kids after hours.

It's good to see that there are some parents who keep reign on their children. The more and more I read about the drunken antics of adults and roaming teens at all hours, the less I am thrilled to go on my cruise.

There is no way I could ever fathom letting my almost 13 year old have the freedom to explore on her own on a cruise ship. No way.

If you raise good kids, they will be good kids on vacation too. My son hung out with a group of 10 kids last July the entire cruise at all times day and night. They never got into any trouble. Just liked hanging out. They still all keep in touch even though they are from all over the US...

I wouldn't get comfortable. I was honestly shocked at the amount of young unsupervised kids and teen drinking on my last cruise. I literally got flamed and called a lair for suggesting any kind of curfew. I thought 2 am was too late for kids looking 10 and younger to be in a pizza line with partiers coming from the disco. As a parent, l thought looking out for kids, other than my own was a good thing, nope!

CCL suggests a lot of things.

Tips

Dress,

Kids curfew,

Serving food at the buffet,

making noise in the hallway late at night,

You dont have to follow any of those things.

Do what you want.

After all its CCL.

The low price leader.

Hmm, based on your logic, the high priced leaders enforce their dress codes, have curfews and police the hallways at night!

NOT! I love it when a CCL basher proves that they dont know what they are talking about!

Has nothing to do with how "good" your kids are. Even if they are angels, there are still sickos out there.

...So he will have QUITE a bit more freedom. But he STILL will have a curfew. But the Higher Being KNEW I couldn't handle another kid like my Daughter (first born) so Son is a good kid. At least he's not been brought home by the Police or arrested yet. LOL!

IF he meets a few kids that he hangs out with, I would be more inclined to go with the majority's curfew (when the other kids had to be 'in') but in absence of that, he'll probably have to be in by 1:00. His curfew at home is midnight (city law) so he'll think he's living it up to stay out another hour!!

I can't imagine letting him 'run the halls' until all hours of the night. *I* care too much about him to not know where he is/what he's doing.

Yes, they do and they are enforced.

Well that’s good to know. I do like Carnival, but yes there should be a curfew as a rule. And the parents should have one too. Guess I’m a little old fashioned. I was 23 and had graduated from college and my parents still expected a valid explanation as to why I needed to be out past 2:30am!

Azarmara, Princess, Celebrity and HAL do enforce their dress codes for the MDR. Even NCL with its "Freeslob" cruising enforces the dress code in one of it's dining rooms on board (the other MDR's motto is nothing is too ratty for dinner).

So I guess this means the higher priced cruiselines do have curfews for kids under 18?

To answer your question, the higher priced cruise lines do have curfews for unsupervised teens. Since Carnival is the low priced leader, and thus tends to have unsupervised teens wandering around. (most likely, having security is too costly )

I have seen, at 12:15am teens told to dispand and return to staterooms on the pool decks, and at pizza shops on other cruiselines.

Carnival is the "fun ship" for every age and as a parent, it seems most don't care what "fun" the kids are doing.

It probably depends on the ship. We have friends who have cruised on Princess and Celebrity and can tell you from their experience, kids were all over the ship, dress code not enforced etc.

this is probably true of Carnival as well. We have been on some carnival ships that enforce their policies and on other ships that could care less! i wish that Carnival would consistently enforce their policies across the fleet. I get tired of seeing all the youngsters using the hot tubs as their personal pools. We even had a few times when the kids were doing canon balls into them! But then again we have seen inconsistent policy enforcement on RCCL and NCL also.

As a good parent raising good kids, how much and how well did you know the 10 kids your good son was hanging out with. At home would you allow your good son to hang out day and night with kids you did not know, whose parents you haven't met. If your good son was offered favors from a pretty girl, would he say no, I am too good. It's not only what your good son does but what he could be exposed to. If he is a cute teenage boy there are pretty angels waiting to exploit his goodness.

Well, i am not sure you are correct. can you share evidence of your claim? i searched Princess and Celebrity webistes and reviewed their contract. There was nothing anywhere on the Princess site or their contract that speaks of curfews.

Celebrity has only this: "Ship's management reserves the right to enact curfews on an individual, group, or ship-wide basis, if in the sole judgment of the ship's Captain, such steps become necessary to ensure guest or crew safety."

Personally, i would be ok with Curfews. I am just challenging your position that the higher price lines do this.

You said it. It has nothing to do with raising good kids. It’s just the point that certain situations call for supervision and by a certain time of the night/morning, you need to have your under-aged tail in your room. I’ve seen plenty of kids doing nothing more than eating ice cream or sitting around laughing at nothing like all teenagers do. But by a certain time, cut all of that and gone back to your cabin. There’s a new round of fun to be had the next day or the next trip. We were all teens at one time. Nobody is trying to be a prude here. But seriously, if there are other lines setting curfews and enforcing them, then kudos to them. Give credit where its due IF in fact this is the case with other lines.

I have sailed Princess with kids and they don't have a curfew. However they don't seem to have as many fun parents who think unsupervised kids late at night is OK and no one's business. That might be a FUNdamental difference. The ship has this sit your butt down vibe.

My concern is after hours when the freaks and the freak in us come out. All other times they should be reminded why duct tape was invested. Silence is golden, duct tape is silver!

========================

Gosh, I've cruised on most mass market cruise lines and there have never been any curfews ... except for some lounges.

I really don't get what the difference in safety between night and day would be. The ship is a very closed population. It's very unlikely that there are people who will come out at night who otherwise wouldn't be out during the day. The key to safety would be staying in populated areas whether or not it's the daytime or nighttime.

Fundamentally, ships are a very safe place. The other thread had 7 crimes reported between Carnival and RCI over 3 months. If we make some really conservative assumptions that it's just the Carnival fleet of 24 ships carrying 3000 people every week, you get a population of 936,000 cruisers over a 13 week quarter. 7 crimes spread over this population is negligible. Statistically, a child is more at risk from crime in their cabin with their parents than out and about in public areas.

We stay on Lido and will let the kids (10 and 12) go once or twice late at night. They just think it is really cool to go get pizza and ice cream at midnight for some reason! If I was on Riveria I am not sure I would do the same thing.

We always give ours parameters - you can be at these places and must check in at this time.....and make it clear that if security brings them back to the room that is where they will stay the rest of the cruise. Works great for us and the kids have never gotten in trouble.....

This will be my first cruise with my children. We have a balcony on lido. They are excited to just leave the room and go get pizza and bring back to the room without having to travel far. For some reason this is cool to them. We also have guidelines in place that I have been drilling into their heads and will continue to drill into their heads until we disembark:D
