Mexico cruise

Hello, my partner and I did a Mexican Rivera cruise with Carnival in 2011 which went to Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta & loved it so much we wanna do it again next year.

I see Princess has sailings that goes to the above ports as well as San Diego, La Paz and Loreto. We are looking at going October 2014. Is this a good time to go cruising, especially to Mexico?

We had a balcony cabin last time and would like to have one again this time. Was thinking of splurging on an AFT balcony - any cabin # that you recommend or don't recommend?

Thank you! :D

We've done a couple October Mexican Riviera cruises and they were fine. We had one problem last year when we spent one day cruising on the edge of a hurricane, but the rest of the days were sunny and perfect.

Hurricane's are always a risk that time of year, but odds are you should be just fine.

We would be more inclined to take a Mexican cruise late in October as opposed to early October. The problem is that October is still in the rainy season in parts of Mexico (like Puerto Vallarta) and odds of having good weather will improve later in the month. That being said, we all understand that good weather is always somewhat of a crap shoot.

I agree with the "later is better" recommendation. Hurricane season is usually winding down by late October and the weather gets much better. Of course, your mileage may vary. As a former Florida resident, we were hit by a weak hurricane in mid December one year.

Weather can be very variable in October. Last week, it was @ 90-degrees in the LA area, the next day, it was 68.

The Caribbean hurricanes don't affect the Mexican Riviera for the most part as Baja California is pretty far north. They are far more likely to hit Cancun which is way south.

I would consider a later cruise for another reason: the whales. They start migrating from Alaska in early October so you have a much better chance of seeing them in November and December. We're booked on this 10-day itinerary on March 1 mostly because the whales will have just started their migration north. By late March, they're mostly gone.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far...something for us to think about. :)

There are two sailings at the end of October then again in November. Will look into our options.

Thanks again! ;-)

Eastern Pacific hurricanes have basically the same season. There was one out there off Baja a few weeks ago.

I agree with Pam. If you aan postpone to at least Dec it would be better in terms of whale watching which in MHO is a highlight of that cruise. We went the first part of Dec. and saw some whales. But nothing like what you see in Feb. That being said we are on that cruise in late Nov. this year on the Grand. No whales for us.

I took a HAL Mexico cruise 3 yrs ago the first week of October. The sea was so calm that when I walked out on the balcony (aft) I thought we were on a lake! Never seen it like that before. They called them wavelets! It was hot and humid, but it was the calmest cruise ever.

We have been there anywhere from Feb to Sept, and the weather has been different every time. That said, we prefer spring-ish because I don't do well with heat. I can't comment about Oct. weather though.

Our first cruise had a Loreto, La Paz itin, and we liked it.

I can't remember which ship is doing this itin, but if it's Golden, we just had C756 (?). It is on Caribe deck---fully aft--fully covered--larger, corner balcony. Awesome. We would book it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks again for the great advice!

It is the Grand Princess that does this itinerary.

We are looking at going to Disneyland as well. We like hot or warm weather. I read it can get cold in LA/Anaheim in November, hence looking at October!

We would go earlier but there are no 7-10 days sailings from LA in August/September.

"Cold" is relative. :) Regardless of the time of year, the coast of southern CA is cool/chilly, even in summer. It could be 90 degrees in Anaheim but in the upper 60's in San Pedro. The reason is that the California Current is a very cold, fast-moving current from the Gulf of Alaska to Baja California. So, no matter what, the first day or two on a cruise to/from San Pedro can be cold/chilly and choppy. You won't experience warm/hot weather until you're near Cabo.
