Hotel suggestions for Amsterdam

Looking for a 3-4 star hotel for Amsterdam for end of April, 2014. Want to be near waterway (canals) and close to center of town so can sightsee.

I want to be able to book tours from the hotel as we know nothing about where we are going.

Any suggestions for the above. Plan to stay 3-4 nights.

Want to see Anne Frank House, do a waterway dinner cruise, see Kuenkfoff Gardens and the Windmills and maybe the farmers fields if the tulips are still in bloom.

Thanks.

Realise Amsterdam is rather compact, very walkable, public transport in town and other parts is frequent and very easy to do yourself.

If you check the website of e.g. Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans etc. you will find directions how to get there. On an organised tour you cannot stay longer or shorter if you want.

Make reservations online for Anne Frankhuis, as lines often are very long. There is a special entrance for people holding reservations.

However this is a link to organised tours. http://lindbergh.nl/

In case you want a private driver, check this guy: http://dagtoertaxi.nl/services.html

Within Amsterdam absolutely book a canalcruise, most of them last about 1 hour, or use one of the hop on/off boats. Also an wine/chess cruise at night is available.

Just to mention a few hotels on a canal, as the choice is very wide:

We did a dinner canal cruise with a company called Holland International, affiliated with the Tui organization. We also did a daytime canal cruise with a company called Lover's. We thought the Holland International company offered a better quality experience than the other company.

Be careful when choosing a a hotel some have no lifts & you could find yourself carrying your luggage up several flights of narrow stairs

I use Priceline to bid on a 4 or 5* in the central area ..

We stayed at the Barbizon Palace near the train station & the Movenpick at the cruise port a short walk or tram ride to the central station area

As INE said Amsterdam is very walkable but do get a tram pass if you want to just hop on when you tire

Might be more than you want to spend. We loved the hotel and the location. It was next to the Vondel Park and near the Art Museums and a canal ride stop. We would stay there again.

Try the Renaissance Hotel near the train station.... It was in a convenient location off the major roads. There s a tapas restaurant across the street with good, local food. You can walk around the canals or on busy streets. It's not far from the red light area. We did take a cab to the cruise port...but one could walk if they wanted. Cheers!

I can highly recommend the Hotel Estherea. Stayed there a year or so ago with some American friends that had been on a river cruise. The whole place was great and the rates were reasonable. One tip: If you decide to stay there, join their 'friends of Estherea' loyalty programme before you go. It has some great benefits, including, if I'm not mistaken, free breakfast. Look at Tripadvisor, it gets great ratings. I think it ticks all of your boxes.

Have you considered using Priceline's NYOP? We used Priceline's NYOP for our 5 day stay in Amsterdam this past May.

We scored the 4 star Movenpick (next to the cruise terminal) for under $100 per night (modern hotel with all the amenities plus lift ... beautiful room on the 15th floor with 2 queen size beds overlooking the IJ). A steal! Tram #26 is across the street from the hotel & took us to Centraal Station in about 3 minutes. You can also bid 5 star hotels.

We saw and went everywhere that we wanted either by tram or on foot .... Zaanse Schans (to see the windmills ... caught the bus from Centraal Station), Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, evening canal cruise, red light district, Museum Amstelkring (very interesting catholic church hidden inside a canal house), Rembrandt House museum, Museum Van Loon, walked the 9 shopping streets of the Jordaan, Oude Kirk, Nieuwe Kirk, Westerkirk, Waterlooplein Flea Market, Nieuwmarkt, Floating flower market, Royal Palace, Amsterdam history museum, & Albert Cuyp Market. Lovely city with lots to see & do.

As previously mentioned, Amsterdam is rather compact & the tram system is wonderful! The city itself is very walkable.

We stayed at the Hotel Victoria and walked everywhere! They served a very nice breakfast every morning and the concierge was really helpful. We were pleased with our location and amenities. Be sure to order your Anne Frank tickets ahead of time and skip the line when you arrive!
