Poor TV Channel Selections on RCL

Does this bother anyone else?
What cruise was this? While Satellites do work on the ocean they do have limitations longitude wise and whats available varies. On 9 cruises there were only 2 were I watched much TV. I was on Allure May 1st 2011 when we found out Osama Bin Laden was snorkeling in the Med. :D I couldn't help but sneak it to see some coverage periodically and we got CNN and FOXnews. There was usually an ESPN and ESPN international and a few choices.

Your description however does sound more like my last Majesty cruise. On Halloween night I spent a bunch of time in my cabin because I was tired and not a fan of Halloween parties. I did watch a bunch of those promotional videos, some I were dated, but I found interesting. I think we both just called them promotional videos, but in one case, it really wasn't. I watched a show about a family of 4 sailing a 7 day out of LA on Mariner. I remember thinking that I would like that cruise, but as most of us know, they don't sail from there any more! So it was dated.

Based on these two observations, I would guess the satellite equipment on the new ship is newer and has more capability. I do remember seeing part of the NFL draft on ESPN from the sports bar on Freedom.

I agree it's the pits. I remember some years ago there was a station that showed old movies and serials such as "Ozzie & Harriet", "Burns & Allen" etc.
I'd like to watch TV while getting dresses for dinner or before going to bed.

In one of my reviews I mentioned that I would pay extra for cable such as Direct TV, etc. Nothing has come of it.
No Faux News, no problem. CNN International is OK, better than CNN in the US in terms of actual reporting of news.

It's not a political statement:rolleyes:

This is a thread about what TV programming people DO and DO NOT want available in their room. Don't twist my words into something they are not. If you are unsure of anything I've said just ask me to clarify my statement, I gladly will.

Of all the web forums I participate in this one is amongst both the most useful for information, and the most rude/judgmental if you don't play along with the masses. Dissenting opinions not welcomed on Cruise CRITIC. Go figure.
uh, yeah, no political slant here.... Edited by fishin' musician

No political slant; you have no idea of my political affiliations or beliefs. I'm allowed to express my opinions just like everyone else, and just like applies to everyone else, if you don't understand something just ask me to clarify rather than attempt to twist my words so you can be snarky, you come off looking petty that way.

I prefer my news to be factually based, not an opinion claiming to be news. Since my cruise isn't in the US and there tends to be a sizable international guest makeup I find CNN International to be completely adequate and a reasonable selection for the delivery of factual reporting of news and events. Someone else said they wished they got BBC World Service. No comment on that?

Now, if we go back to what I did say, I would prefer more music channels. I don't go on a cruise to watch TV. Some additional choices for music while getting ready would be nice. TV, internet, cell phones are pretty much the last things I think about or want on a cruise vacation, that's my opinion and what works for me.

I wish there were looped cultural/historical shows on the ports of call rather than shopping commercials too.

I will always remember the first cruise I went on with my parents and sister. Sister and I were in a room together and there was one channel that showed nothing but "What's Happening" and "What's Happening Now". It was surreal. No matter what time, day or night. I had no idea there were that many episodes of those two shows.
How did you reach that conclusion  ??? I do indeed have an idea
I reached that conclusion by using logic. You and I do not personally know one another, therefore it would be a flawed assumption on your part to guess at my political affiliations or beliefs.

Back on topic; how do YOU feel about TV programming on cruise ships?
International broadcast rules prohibit networks from airing certain content outside of the United States. This includes most of what we all watch at home. That leaves the selection of channels available on cruise ships to just a few, including international news stations.
I work for Turner Broadcasting and at least in the realm of our networks (TNT, TBS, Cartoon, TruTV), what is available (at least on the FOS a few months ago) was either a direct feed from our Latin America versions of these networks, or batches of content supplied by our Latin American networks and played out in a loop of some sort by the IT people on the ship. On the FOS, you can see all of their broadcast equipment through the glass on the way to the ice rink...
Its a Seagate Wireless Plus model# 1AYBA2. 1 terra bite hard drive. It was great on our Alaska cruise as we went with another couple..on the flight up all 4 of us were watching 4 different movies. I think it was about $150 or so. Best Buy has it. My DH is a tech and owns his own Hardware consultation business so he's up with all the newest gadgets.
Thanks. Now I'll have to get my son to ask mom for it for Christmas. I'll probably have to bribe him with a burger.

This is correct. Some channels offer a live stream mostly from international sources while others offer bunched up programming that the ships onboard tv studio puts together. Copyright laws mainly prohibit a lot of US content to be broadcast outside of the US. A lot of the programming is in other languages for foreign guests.
Oh, then your
misspelling of the word "FOX" would be.....a typo?
Calling a news organization false is not political, unless said organization can be said to have a political affiliation, in which case the accusation is true, albeit political.

so either said news outlet is apolitical and therefore criticizing it is as well, or it's a true statement. Pick one.

the worst show I saw last year on RCCL tv was some show about the ocean, I watched for 10 minutes but nothing happened at all. Boring! Edited by DrD

Not to make any assumptions or judgements, but the term "Faux News" is typically used by those that lean left as a pejorative replacement for Fox News on message boards. I will assume that is why responders thought your post was political (as opposed to you saying you didn't like opinion based news like Fox or MSNBC). A statement like that is very neutral politically... :)
I agree that the TV stations could use improvement. We all fall asleep with the TV on and it stays on all night long. That TNT station needs some change day to day!!
We also sleep with the TV on. And I also wake up if the TV goes off for any reason. Many times this has been my alert to power outages. I would love to be able to view a comedy channel on the ship (ex. TV Land or TBS). It would heighten my cruise experience while winding down from the casino or the clubs!

You can echo the sentiments of others, but you will only be as incorrect as they. Perhaps everyone else would have been happier if I simply said "No talking heads". My broad point is that when I am on vacation I don't tune in to political opinion programming, I can do that at home.

I go on vacation to power down and enjoy the ports, the activities on ship, and the people I am with. I'd be quite content if the TV had 10 different music stations to select from. I never said you shouldn't have a show of your choice. I never insulted anyone over their own choices. I still believe I am allowed to express my opinion. If something I say is misconstrued or misunderstood that is just as much my fault as the person responding; I need to clarify my statements.

I'll be the first to recognize that often inflection and tone gets lost on a black and white screen versus speaking. We have the whole range here, from those that would gladly pay additional for more programming to those who probably never turn it on once the whole trip; it really doesn't matter. We're all just expressing our preferences. :)

Enough already. We all know what you meant. Time to move on. And yes the TV selection on Royal is lame.
So do I.
Actually was afraid to post my comments as I knew someone would label Fox News "faux" news. Think the best thing would be for RCI to have Fox, CNN and CNN International etc. as it would satisfy a wide audience.

I also wish that RCI would make more videos on the building of their ships. Own the video on the planning, building and taking out of the Voyager and I still like to watch it on the ship. Hope they do one on the new ships.
