Rare A&L_Ont Posted April 27, 2015 #526 Share Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) Strange. Not for me. Booked in CAD but everything extra is in USD. I prepaid gratuities in CAD but they added 10% to the standard USD gratuities. Excursions are definitely in USD and not appearing to offer the option to pay in CAD at the preferred exchange rate. :( They can also pre pay excursions in Canadian dollars at the same rate. It also applies to the onboard gratuities. Sent from my SGH-I317M using Forums mobile app They said that it shows in U.S. on their planner, just like quote that I posted above. They booked in Canadian. Perhaps a quick call to their TA might clarify it for them. Is the price typically the same in U.S. and Canadian for the same excursions? AE_Collector Posted April 27, 2015 #527 Share Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) Onboard account will be in US$ and will show that way in the personalizer. The deal is that you can PrePurchase US$ OBC at $1.10 Canadian for that cruise. Buy $100 US for $110 Canadian. The largest single purchase is $500 but you buy as many as you want in one transaction. St Paul Girl Posted May 2, 2015 #528 Share Posted May 2, 2015 the one thing I cant get clarity on is this situation: cruise after september, but booked while rate still 10%...from the gratuity option it looks like I will be charged 20% but that could just be a programming thing....I will know when i call to buy OBC later in the year....right now I'm focused on my june trip, which I know is 10%. We are cruising in October around Tahiti and the pre-pay for the gratuities is showing as 20% on-line for us. We booked this trip in December when our dollar was about 10%! We booked in CDN$s. If anyone has more information about OBC purchases, let me know.It looks like we may have missed the 10% on the OBC. Have a great cruise:
Rare richstowe Posted May 3, 2015 #529 Share Posted May 3, 2015 Just spend quite some time trying to convince my dad to buy 500 OBC for his upcoming Princess cruise . He is correctly of the "if it sounds to good to be true" school . When I told him about the great 10% premium Princess is charging , lets just say he was wary . It's hard to convince somebody that such a good deal really is a good deal . He agreed to do so but he is still suspicious . Can't really blame him . ;)
Mud_Shark Posted May 3, 2015 #530 Share Posted May 3, 2015 Cruising September 21st on the Royal. Booked back in January. I called last Monday to gift myself OBC and was told it was 10%. Saw my credit card statement and indeed, it came through at 10%. I will call tomorrow and add more OBC. Don

I bought a good amount of OBC for my own Princess cruise and it worked out very well .I ended up happily taking the excess OBC off the Regal in cash . My post was about trying to convince my dad that something that sounds too good to be true actually is true.
Rare ceilidh1 Posted May 4, 2015 #534 Share Posted May 4, 2015 How do you take the excess in cash? I have pre bought OBC (just did it for my cruise last month) and been very glad of the 10% exchange rate. However, when I tried to cash out on the last day I was told by front desk that they no longer gave cash and would mail a cheque.... boo! I was hoping to do this for my upcoming coastals - was thinking of doing a few hundred OBC to make use of the 10% and then cash out so I have $USD to spend in San Francisco. Don't want to risk not being able to get it in cash, though!

We had gone to the casino the previous night. We took most of what was still on our account. The $130 was what remained .
Rare RLK33853 Posted May 4, 2015 #536 Share Posted May 4, 2015 This has already been discussed a couple of pages ago - each ship's Passenger Services seems to set their own policy in how they refund the excess. We have had no problem whatsoever in getting the cash from Passenger Services, while other people on other ships are told that they are not able to cash out. The one other option is to open a Casino account and then cash out - but again they may/will freeze your Casino account afterwards if you don't play any of the money, although they told me that they would cash out up to $300.00 before they would freeze our Casino account. Either way we take a chance but always have a backup plan. We just bought a bunch of OBC at 10% for our Med cruise next month. Worse case scenario if you have a backup plan is that they give you your money back later. Good luck
Adventures ahead Posted May 4, 2015 #537 Share Posted May 4, 2015 Has anyone pre-purchased OBC (on their credit card now) and then something happened that they had to cancel their cruise? What then?
St Paul Girl Posted May 5, 2015 #538 Share Posted May 5, 2015 Has anyone pre-purchased OBC (on their credit card now) and then something happened that they had to cancel their cruise? What then? That's a concern of ours as well. Not a big issue as the CDN dollar is sitting at 1.20US anyway, so Princess at 20% is no incentive to pre-pay/book anything. I went on-line and for me to pre-pay gratuities, it is 20%. Not happenings at that rate. If anyone pre-pays any more OBCs, let us know at what rate. Have a great cruise:

No - you can do it directly. The first time I got OBC , I purchased it direct from Princess . Later thinking what a great deal it was I wished to get some more . The Princess rep wouldn't let me and told me to deal with my TA . So I did .
crissy4382 Posted May 7, 2015 #544 Share Posted May 7, 2015 While this applies to most cruises, it doesn't apply to all, as my experience described above indicates. Thanks for the tips I just booked $100 USD and paid $110CAD for my upcoming cruise.

M4dC0w Posted May 7, 2015 #548 Share Posted May 7, 2015 The 10 or 20% depends if the CAD price ends in 80 or 90 cents, not when you book it.

What do you mean if the CAD price ends in 80 or 90 cents when you booked it? I do NOT understand that statement.
