Great news! Thank you. :)

If he wants to stick out like a sore thumb. People in the bars and lounges will be dressed up on formal nights. One time I was on the pool deck and went down to my cabin to change for dinner into my suit. It was after 6. My card didn't work in the door so I had to go down to guest relations. I felt very uncomfortable in the public areas. Stuck out like a sore thumb. Sometimes I change after dinner out of my suit but I wear long pants and a collared shirt if I do that.

Thanks for the heads up. I agree with you and as DH always does this on our cruises I am used to the looks from others on formal nights. We try to stay clear of the theatre and use outdoor bars when possible but he just likes what he likes. Hopefully we will experience the same mix of folks later in the evening. Some dressed and some not. He doesn't care what others think. But also doesn't wear tshirts and flip flops either in the evening. We have always been able to go pretty much everywhere on HAL ships after dinner with no issue so sounds like it will be the same on Celebrity.

Was just reminded of favorite quote by comedian George Gobel (anyone else remember him?)

"did you ever get the feeling that the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?"

Some in tuxedos will give a person wearing shorts a funny look, most won't

More bad info. The theater is smart casual every evening. You might get away with it or you may be asked to change.

Agreed. Technically, smart casual is the dress code across the entire ship every evening (except for formal in the MDR on formal nights). A small number of people do not follow it and sometimes are let into venues, and sometimes not - it depends on how picky the Captain is and what direction he gives the staff. On most cruises most people stick to the smart casual dress code.

And on the night of the Captains formal toast in the theater, most Captains (albeit not all) require that people on the first level of the theater dress in formal wear while the Captain is there. We have been turned away from the first floor in smart casual on that night. No issues on the second floor of the theater. This is actually NOT following the dress code so I personally don't think it is right that they do this, but some do.
Always wear shorts even to mdr nobody cares why should you ,
Are you the shorts police .
Not the shorts police, but usually Celebrity is. Fortunately people who sail on Celebrity are know for having class. Unfortunately as some of the posts on these threads show, sometimes that class is low:rolleyes:

Sounds like some HAL ships. They sometimes enforce dress code on captains toast night and others not. Seems to vary by ship and captain. We have been on the same ship (Eurodam) 4 times and always different. We usually stay away from the theatre on formal nights just to play it safe. Thanks for all the advice. I am soaking it up like a sponge. I am such a planner and we usually book way in advance so this is fast for me.

Been on HAL and I would say that the dress conduct on Celebrity is similar.

Could you point us to the link for this on the Celebrity website. I completely disagree with this, unless you can show it to me on their website.

This appears more to be a situation of "this is what I think it should be, or it might have been like this once upon a time"

You bring up an interesting technicality.

Here's what is printed in the Daily. This was specifically for a formal night:

"Evening Dress Code

Ladies: Cocktail dress, gown or pant suit.
Gentlemen: Tuxedo, suit or dinner jacket with slacks.

Celebrity Cruises honors this grand sailing tradition and all our guests are asked to follow the dress code indicated in the Celebrity Today.

The Dress Code is in effect from 6:00 p.m. each evening and is applied strictly in our main dining room"

To be accurate, it doesn't say that the Dress Code is only in effect in the dining room. It doesn't say that it's in effect only for certain times or places
And it doesn't say that this only applies to Formal Night.

So, it is entirely reasonable to say that the Dress Code, whether the Formal or the Smart Casual and Above, is in effect throughout the ship from 6:00 p.m.

Which would preclude shorts, flip flops, etc.

However, we know that in practice, some people do choose to wear shorts in the evening -- eating at the buffet, going to a pool deck party, etc. etc.

There have been scattered reports of people in shorts being turned away from the Theater, by the way.

Yes, that is because it's specifically written into the dress code;

From Celebrity's website FAQ;

"Additionally, you are asked to follow the "Smart Casual & Above" dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances."

Yet there is no SPECIFIC language banning shorts or stating that the "evening dress code" is in effect ship wide after 6 pm.

Anyone is welcome to infer anything into the dress code language that they want to, it doesn't make it binding on me.

Plain and simple the dress code for the evening is for the MDR, the specialties have their own code which is Smart Casual and above as well as the theatre. The rest of the ship is not regulated by the evening code.

People who wear shorts in the evening are few and far between because the places they are allowed are on the casual upper pool decks and buffet area. Occasionally you will see someone in the casino. The theater is also smart casual every evening and that does not include shorts. Edited by Ma Bell
First time with Celebrity, does this mean no shorts?

"Daywear includes slacks or pants, blouses or shirts, knit tops or polo shirts. Bring a pair of sneakers or rubber-soled shoes for deck sports and a swimsuit cover-up for cool areas on the ship.
Shorts(nice shorts!,not bathing trunks)are fine pretty much ship wide during the day. At night you need to follow the dresscodes. I've seen some shorts in the buffet area at night, but usually later in the eve. Still not "kosher" as far as most of us are concerned. Those who insist on casual at all times(which usually means trashy wear)should stick to lines like Carnival, where style seems nonexistant nowadays. There's even talk of doing away with table cloths & such in the MDR. Geesh! why not just get Micky D's to cater the ship!

Actually, the rest of the ship IS at least smart casual. Shorts really are not permited at night. It's just the staff is too chicken to confront those with slovenly taste.

There's always Carnival for those who can't dress properly.

Feel free to go there, meanwhile let's not try to press our bias on other people unless it directly is against the Celebrity rules and guidelines.
I love wearing my shorts all over. Wish I could have used them in MDR, but the fashion police were in a uproar. :) but alas I cave and wear jeans instead and still get the evil eye from some :D, then back to shorts after dinner.
Ahh Yes, being from Lowell, I guess that says it all!! Thank God you're not from Lawrence, I'd really hate to see how you'd dress.

Fact: Shorts are not allowed in the MDR or any specialty restaurant at night
Fact: The theatre is smart-casual every night (which presumably means no shorts although this is debatable)

There is nothing in Celebrity's dress code that says shorts are banned at any other time or place. Anything anyone says to the contrary is just personal opinion OR a result of a particular ship trying to enforce their own interpretation of the dress code.

You mean like shorts for smart casual is debatable? Why is it debatable or is it your interpretation? It's very clear what smart casual is.

Oh, I agree with you. I just know some people (older gents mostly) who would debate that smart shorts could be considered smart-casual. A lot of younger women would also consider shorts to be smart casual. I disagree with them.
Its what I thought, but I after I read that made me think a bit about is it ok or not :)

I am actually excited to know that this line doesn't allow shorts in the MDR, this is ONE thing I hate about Carnival...walking in and people in sandals, tank tops and everything in-between.

Thanks again!
My son defines formal night on Carnival as "the night the guys turn the bills of their caps to face forward rather than to the back or side."
