Considering half of those bands have played my company's holiday parties in the last 8 years, if I was already booked I'd pay to see them. Probably wouldn't specifically book unless it was a group I really wanted to see.

This entertainment has never been on Carnival. Nobody here plays county fairs.

Carnival has flown in entertainment for years we didn't pay extra for

how many acts should I give you links for that have or going to play county or state fairs

I can name at least 6

here is Foreigner

I love the idea! If they were to put a concert on every cruise, I could see why the gamblers would be upset but it is only on some of them. If you like to gamble, don't pick those cruises. If you are like me, and don't set foot in the casino, then a concert option is appealing. And if you don't like the artist, don't pay for the concert. This is much better than including a "free" concert, but charging more for the cruise. At home, if I want to go to a concert, I have to drive about an hour to get there, pay for parking, sit in a huge stadium, avoid alcohol because I am driving home, then after the concert, sit in my car in bumper to bumper traffic to try to get out of the parking lot. A smaller concert on a cruise when I am not driving sounds perfect to me!!!

I like the idea and my husband was very enthusiastic about it. We wouldn't likely book a cruise based on a act, but if we were deciding between two dates it might influence it. And if was an act we'd enjoy $20-30 per ticket doesn't sound unreasonable. That said, I can't think of anyone I'd buy a vip ticket for. If it was an act I wasn't interested in, I might well book a more far reaching excursion for the port.

WOW, hadn't thought about the fact that since the ship will stay in port on the "Concert Evenings", everything else will be pretty much shut down. That will effectively KILL one evening of the cruise, unless you spend the extra bucks to see that concert. BUMMER!

"SKY"

Not worth booking the cruise if this is the case! We were looking at the May 22nd sailing out of Tampa on the Paradise.

What's the rest of the passengers going to do while the concert goes on? Its a small venue and couldn't fit all, if all wanted to attend.

Doesn't make good business sense to me to have everything else closed down!! A whole night of casino revenue lost, no way!!

Carnival would never let this happen since they depend on casino/liquor revenue for profit.

I would not go on any of the cruises where this option is currently offered simply because they are less than 7 days. I might consider it if this option is offered on longer cruises, depending upon the entertainer and cost.

I asked John Heald about this on his Facebook page and he said the larger ships/7 day cruises will be in the 2nd Phase.

I am surprised that they're willing to shut down the casino for a night - especially on a short cruise. That seems very counter-intuitive. I doubt they're making much on these concerts. It's probably more of a way to draw people to the ships - especially new customers.

I voted "Love This" but more because of the extended time in port rather than for the concert itself. There are very few artists that I would pay to see so the way I look at it is either I will want to go to the concert or I can spend more time in port. There is no concert scheduled for my cruise on the Dream in May but I would really like to have more time in Nassau since we are going to Atlantis. We have a 5PM departure now so not a lot of time to spend there for the money I will have to pay.

I think it is a great idea for an addition. In all my cruises, I think I've been to shows three times (I can actually only remember two, but I'm assuming that I've forgotten one somewhere along the way). It just doesn't interest me. But seeing a concert by a band that I know and like (even if they're not my favorite) is something I would definitely do if it was the right act. And I'd have no problems paying $20-$40 for a ticket. I expect to pay well over $100 for a good seat when the biggest acts come to town, so paying $30 to see a band from the 80's do a full set of all their hits would be good value.

I suppose for passengers who routinely go to the shows, it is more than just "if you don't like the act, don't buy the ticket". They might reasonably feel that they're losing something (i.e., the opportunity to go to one free show one night of a cruise). But I don't imagine there are too many of those people left.

For the record, this cruise sold out in less than 2 hours. I guess we can close the book on that popularity. Your idea of fun and the 2,000 cabins that bought it must a tad differrent.

Thanks for that link! Yowza!

Hmmm...If they put NSync or BSB on, I might have to seriously consider it! :D In seriousness though.

...Although my husband would want to strangle me. Thank goodness he likes Disney music too! LOL...

I'm not a big concert goer and none of the current acts interest me.

Not only that but I'm not sure I want to cruise a ship with a large group of people who are there to see 1 band, seems like being an outsider on a chartered ship.

When planning future cruises I will make a point to check out if this Live thing is happening and who the act is. I will probably make a point not to schedule that cruise.

Yes, with a bunch of 30-something year old single women re-living their middle school days. Can you imagine being on a cruise like that and not being interested in NKOTB?

While the NKOTB cruise is a charter, I fear that this new LIVE concept will bring out the same hysteria and fans taking over an entire ship.

Even though I don't really care for any of the entertainers in the current lineup, I would pay $20 to enjoy an evening at a concert before I pay $50 to board the ship early which I think ts the most absurd idea, yet some people think that FTTF is the best thing since sliced bread.

Once again, it's all about having choices! Some people will choose to spend their money at a concert, others will spend it on FTTF, others will go to the steakhouse, etc, etc. Some will do it all, some will do nothing. But they are all enjoying their vacation they way that THEY CHOOSE to enjoy it.

Excellent post!

I don't have a problem with a lot of passengers liking the group giving the concert. I would be totally turned off if the artist was staying on board the whole time. Glad they will be on and off. Give a good show and get going.:p

It's highly unlikely that I would book a cruise that has one of these live acts scheduled. My favorite entertainment on a ship is the casino, so to have it closed one evening would be a real bummer.

I totally agree, Janey. I just can't see the logic of closing the casino and shops onboard for one night. I guess Carnival will be testing the waters to see if they can make up the losses from this in concert ticket sales. Time will tell. If I'm cruising primarily to gamble, I would avoid these concert cruises altogether.

I'd just be happy to keep things as they are and add Calypso bands and lots of steel drums island music and invest in improving food quality.

I like the concept and what they've done so far. I am not going out of my way to book a cruise with one of these acts, but there are a few where I would pay the lower tier pricing if I was on the same cruise (Foreigner, Chicago, etc.)

As far as this replacing one night of free entertainment...oh well. No skin off my back. There are many things that CCL considers entertainment that we never participate in (Hasbro, Talent Show, etc.), so there's no loss at all.

Glad to see they're trying new things on CCL.

I think it's a nice idea. I wouldn't book a cruise because of a concert or an artist but if I was on a cruise and they happened to have an artist I wanted to see, I would purchase tickets if they weren't to expensive. None of the artist currently listed appeal to me though. I think it gives people other options for entertainment.
