Just trying to sort out the comparison and keep it apples to apples. When I was a kid I say Frankie Valley and the Four aeasons for free.

What are you talking about here? Carnival has never done Broadway shows on any of our cruises. They do a poor job of presenting a little Broadway type music, and only a few songs in an entire week cruise. Never a full show. To get that you have to cruise Royal Caribbean.

 

I will pass. If I want to see a broadway show, btw a good one not hairspray, I will go to broadway not the imitation b level junk rccl does.

Nope, I think all entertainment options are a good thing. My comment was that I prefer (much) broadway over the b level broadway (type) plays offered on rccl. I would not go see hairspray in either case, but def not on a cruise. I think the concert options are far better than imitation broadway plays (on any line)....including rccl. Are you critiquing all my posts?

I respect Sarge, he knows more on cruising than the vast majority of posters here. While we cruise a fair amount, I envy his cruising lifestyle. We really enjoy Carnival....can you tell? We are trying Oasis for several reasons. There are things that rccl does that we don't particularly like but the ship is worth it for us to do. We also have a son in law who is diamond plus on royal and has sailed with us on Carnival and it is time for a payback. I am sure that we will enjoy it and I will post a review with some comparative thoughts upon our return.

I won't be booking a cruise because of an on-board concert. I book our family vacations (cruises) out of consideration for ship, itinerary, and over-all cost. IF the cruise I book for my family just happens to have one of these special concerts, I'll probably pay extra for it just because it is a special event and in many cases it could be a once in a life time experience. After all, the venue is smaller and more intimate than in most coliseums/concert halls so the show would be much better in my opinion. However, if the artist or group is not to my liking or taste, I'll just enjoy the extra time in port. I say kudos to Carnival Cruise Lines for coming up with one more option for us guests!! If you're interested, go for it. If not, enjoy the extra time in port or take the time to enjoy the ship when it is not so crowded.

 

 

You make a good point. It is all about options. They are adapting.

Makes no difference to me, as we don't do the shorter cruises. If we were to find ourselves in a ship that had it, I might consider if it were a group I could tolerate. I haven't seen a show in the main theatre in a few cruises, as they are not appealing to me anymore, so I could really care less about that venue being used. I probably would enjoy the longer port times.

This is a great idea if Carnival doesn't screw it up too badly while they're going through the learning curve. Of course not everyone will be interested in the concerts just like I'm not interested in the casino, bingo, FTTF or Cheers. It appears Carnival is trying to bring in fans of these acts that are new to cruising and enjoy their favorite artist at a reasonable price in a nice venue. And we all know Carnival could use some new cruisers.

 

They've done a pretty good job selecting acts that represent a wide range of music genres to appeal to a wide range of age demographics. Of course a lot of these acts play at state fairs if you live in "Flyover Country," but so what? Not everyone is close to a state fair and I would much rather see them in a nice comfortable, air-conditioned, intimate theater than a hot, buggy outdoor grandstand or cattle arena.

 

One hit wonders and has beens??

 

Lady Antebellum is one of the hottest acts in the entire music industry selling out the biggest arenas both in the US and overseas. And they actually write their own music! Getting Lady A to do a concert on a Carnival Ship is a HUGE deal. Their fan club probably has over 250,000 registered members and could probably sellout the entire ship with just Lady A fans.

 

The bottom line is if you're not interested in the concert, just don't book that cruise and those of us who do like live concerts from top artists will be happy to buy the tickets.

Oddly enough, Lady A just played here last week. There was an article in our newspaper that the venue was less than half-full and they even brought in about 3000 fewer people than they did a couple years ago. So not sure they are still that huge and our area is FILLED with country music fans.

That's really odd...The only dates I see since 1/12 are Fargo, ND (1/18), Rapid City, SD (1/19), Denver (1/23), Salt Lake (1/24) and Bozeman, MT (1/25). Which city and date are you referring to and I will look up the actual attendance.

You bring up an interesting conundrum. Suppose an act like Lady A. (so far still a one hit wonder to me) is on a booked solid cruise full of already paid non Lady A. Fans, and the true Lady A. Fans can't book because the ship is already full.

Yes - my numbers were actually a bit off. They were at 4990 in attendance but the venue could have held 7224. Three years ago, they drew 6783.

It wouldn't appeal to us, we like the cover bands, lounge acts, and the comedy shows. But to each their own. As long as these cruises are clearly marked so we don't accidently book one, no problem at all.

I question the accuracy of your bloggers numbers, but it was a Sunday night and a show that was rescheduled from December 12th, but to say they aren't "A" list is completely false.

While, I agree that options are good, I was trying to point out that you seem to only believe this when it concerns CCL. You automatically put down the Broadway type show offered by RCL which it appears you haven't seen on B-way or a cruise ship. I was on Oasis myself and chose to do the flowrider instead of Hairspray, but might have chosen to go to Chicago if I was on Allure.

 

You're not interested in one type of entertainment for your own reasons. Other people have their reasons for not being interested in Carnival Live, such as they feel the acts are past their prime or too expensive ($10 at a state fair as opposed to $20-40 on a cruise). I guess I don't understand how putting down the options on 1 cruise line makes the options on another cruise line any better.

I don't think they have any casino's in Mexico. I think they said that the ship casino would be closed while in port.

I was talking about the ships casino in Nassau. It was open while we were in port during the evening.

Can't see them losing all of the gambling revenue to try and get people to go to a concert.

I have multi posting issues on my iPad as well. My points were not as against RCCL per se. it was a reply to someone who was saying that the broadway show on royal was superior. My comment was not to me. I echo your comments on Hairspray. I would rather have my teeth cleaned (which I hate). As to the level of the entertainment, I think that a play on a cruise…and to a lessor extent in a touring company is far inferior to me and I would rather go to Broadway (by far). If you (or someone else does not think the concerts are for them, thats fine). Comparing talent level of Lady A, Martina Mcbride, Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Chicago (not the musical) to a b level broadway play is what I took omage with. We will be sailing on the Oasis in March, I will asses and come back here and go a review and give my thoughts on entertainment as well when I return.

The first time, I saw either of those bands in the 80's, I think there was 30000 plus

The casino will open in Nassau, but not Cozumel. As the ship does not sail until 1 am, revenue loss for the casino and CCL that evening. Doubt CCL will make that much off the concerts, as expenses will take a lot of the ticket revenues.

 

While I restate, DW and I are not interested in the concert, I applaud CCL for even trying something different. At least it is not a ship charter, where everything is priced way more than normal.
