bouhunter Posted January 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) Many people mention the Marriott Stellaris on the Condado. For the price it ought to be;) We try to stay loyal to Marriott for points, but are staying at Hilton (our second choice) properties in March. The Marriott was much more and is not much nicer, if at all. There's a Ritz Carlton. We haven't stayed there but the reviews aren't really fantastic. homeschoolmama Posted January 24, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 24, 2014 Depends on what you want to do at the hotel and how close to the port you want to stay. The further away from the city of san juan you go, the more resort style upscale properties you can find. If you want good beaches and want to be close to the port look at Isla Verde properties like Ritz Carlton or Marriott Courtyard. If want casinos and nightlife, go for Condado properties and if you want old Puerto Rican ambience go for old San Juan properties. Each are has its pros and cons and the latter three areas mentioned are within 25 dollar cab ride of pan american port Sent from my SCH-I915 using Forums mobile app
Jan_In_Maine Posted January 24, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 24, 2014 We have stayed at El Convento - it was wonderful. Normally there is a 2 night minimum, but they said ok to one night ... and then our room was amazing including our own private balcony/patio. taxgal Posted January 24, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 24, 2014 We love the Embassy Suites by the airport: short walk to the beach and many rest for lunch and dinner; free drinks in the evening; full breakfast; Outback Steakhouse on site; free form pool with waterfall....the separate bedroom is also great when traveling with kids. Roce48 Posted January 24, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 24, 2014 I stayed at the Doubletree Hilton in Condado before my last cruise and really enjoyed my stay. Sent from my iPhone using the Cruise Critic App We stayed there also, and loved it. The rooms were very nice. The pool area with hot tub was very tropical with many sitting areas. We used the pool in the morning before we left. Across the street from the hotel is a wonderful huge supermarket with wine, liquor, pop, soda, beer, food items etc, as well as an interesting cafe/take out area. My wife bought a 12 pack of pepsi of which we drank 4, and put 8 in our checked luggage.

texancruzer Posted January 25, 2014 #17 Share Posted January 25, 2014 El Convento !!! This is where visiting dignitaries stay when visiting San Juan. It is a 350+ year old convent converted into a hotel. Large courtyard in the middle with restaurants in the courtyard. Very small pool (plunge pool) but on the terrace they serve wine, cheese and drinks every evening. We stay here when visiting but did stay once at the Sheraton - no comparison ! We love waking the streets of Old San Juan - taking in dinner or a salsa bar. Shopping is nice too. One of our favorite cities.
slidergirl Posted January 25, 2014 #18 Share Posted January 25, 2014 Kind of funny to me that people are mentioning ES and DT and Sheraton when "money is no object." El Convento or the Ritz Carlton, if money is no object.
PORT ROYAL Posted January 26, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) Kind of funny to me that people are mentioning ES and DT and Sheraton when "money is no object." El Convento or the Ritz Carlton, if money is no object. Your point is interestingly made and thought provoking. Some people have hotels which they wish to aspire to stay in. Some actually stay in hotels which some aspire to. And some just stay in hotels they want to):D Edited January 26, 2014 by PORT ROYAL
texancruzer Posted January 26, 2014 #20 Share Posted January 26, 2014 (edited) I dont know.... I kind of thought the same thing...... Embassy Suites and Doubletree Hilton arent exactly "money is no object" kind of hotels to me either. That's not saying you cant have a great experience at these hotels....they just arent upscale as to the experience one gets when "money is no object" I have stayed in luxury 5 star hotels around the world.....and I have stayed in small rustic cabins and cottages....... got good experiences from both and everything in between. It's all in the attitude that is "packed in your bag with you" :D Edited January 26, 2014 by texancruzer

homeschoolmama Posted January 27, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 27, 2014 Sort of depends on the time of year. We have paid anywhere from 180 to 250 at the mariott isla verde. Right on the beach lovely pools and grounds, onsite casino and live salsa music on weekend nights which is a blast! It is where the locals go to dance and dance they do! OttoCal Posted January 27, 2014 #24 Share Posted January 27, 2014 In Old San Juan- El Convento. Classy, refined, elegant etc. In Condado- La Concha. Modern, hip, upscale vibe. Casino. Like it here much more than the Mariott. In Isla Verde (closer to Airport)- Ritz Carlton. Because it's the Ritz. If you don't mind being on the other side of the island- El Conquistador. My personal preference is the Caribe Hilton, but I'm not going on a 'money is no object' budget. ;)
