Breakfast in Main Dining

I see everyone talk about the eggs and such, I'm not a big breakfast person (DH is), do they have the grits in the MDR? I love the station they have set up in the windjammer with the oatmeal and grits and nutts and such to put in it.

Yup! Grits are on the menu and as for the oatmeal/nuts station, they also have that station in MDR - that's part of the buffet mentioned earlier.

DH and I are considering eating breakfast in the main dining room but have always gone to the WJ. Am interested in everyone's pros and cons.

More and more we're doing this. On our first few cruises we never went to the MDR for breakfast or lunch but now we're actually eating there for breakfast more often than the WJ. There's something about being served that makes things a little better. Also, you can get more items in the MDR (eggs benedict for ex) and there's no waiting in line for a shot at cold scrambled eggs and luke warm bread called "toast". Get it to order!

We love eating breakfast in the MDR. At dinner, we enjoy a big table but at breakfast, we always ask for and get a table for the 3 of us.

Food is usually hot and you get to relax and not fight others for a clean table. Only time we eat in the Windjammer is if we sleep too late.

I like the MDR breakfast but have always felt pushed(I'm alone) to fill one of the tables for 12. Hadn't noticed smaller table and didn't realize I could ask to be put at one . Am I the only one who didn't realize there was a choice and how forcible do you have to insist?

My experience with breakfast in the MDR is that the service is not worth the extremely long wait to get your food.

Nothing came out hot, just a step above warm. The grits were already starting to solidify in the bowl and wouldn't melt the butter I added. The toast is no better in the MDR than it is in WJ.

They were also very pushy about trying to get you to order things with an upcharge.

I much prefer WJ for breakfast. I can get exactly what I want (my choice of eggs to order is over easy) and I don't have to wait around for it hoping everything want will be hot only to be disappointed.

The only time I've been mostly happy with a served breakfast is when they've opened one of the specialty restaurants for gold cards.

Sorry, but we just got off the Independence 3 days ago and experienced NONE of what you are talking about concerning breakfast in the MDR. We ate there most mornings with no problems.

The Windjammer was good, too for mornings when we wnated to be up and out earlier.

Glad that your "gold card" works for you, at least.

Our suite status provided us with access to Chops for breakfast when we recently cruised on Liberty of the Seas. While there was a limited menu including eggs cooked to order, if we wanted things like pancakes or french toast it was necessary to get them in the Windjammer and bring them back to our table at Chops. Service was extremely good and seemed more personable than what we have experienced when we have gone to the main dining room for breakfast and would have been perfect if they had only expanded their menu to more items. My scrambled eggs in the Windjammer have never been "cold" and were, to my mind at least, preferable to the ice cream scoop of scrambled eggs served in the MDR. Also the toast brought around by the asssistant waiter (when you could find him for seconds) was usually as cold or colder than what is available in the WJ. If you have access to the Diamond or Concierge lounges they have toasters where you can get hot toast and English muffins - and complimentary cappuccino. :D

Have someone bring everything to yoo...or...lug your plates, knifes, forks, spoons yourself

Stand in line behind the person who loves to touch the food. Or have someone bring I to you.

Stand in line behind the person who cannot seem to make up their mind or, have someone bring it to you.

Get your semi-warm/cold food or have someone bring it to you.

Walk about 7.5 miles looking for a place to sit, or be greeted with a smile, escorted to your table and have a wait staff just waiting to bring everything to you.

Gee, tough decision!!!!!!!!!!!!

We totally agree Texasmunk!!! :)

It's always a "delight" in the WJ when the person in front of you takes the last 14 slices of bacon :(:(:(

I am not normally a big complainer (check my posts) but.... I just got back from oasis and had the worst service ever in the mdr for breakfast. I along with my 3 other friends waited 45 min for eggs Benedict, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, and one set of pancakes. We enjoyed our conversation but 20 min in the waiter brought one guest the oatmeal which he let sit for 20 more minutes out of respect to the rest of us. He apologized for the delay but said the kitchen was backed up at which point I said, they are only making eggs!!!! The waiter shrugged his shoulders and walked away. It was our only trip to the mdr, we ate at Johnny rockets (which was great) and the windjammer the rest of the cruise.

Being a mere 'limey' perhaps someone will be kind enough to tell me exactly what "grits" are please. I've never heard of that!

Grits are basically a grain porridge made from corn, they remind me of a thick cream of wheat. Very popular in the southern US for breakfast but you will also find them made as a savory side dish for other meals.

I guess we are in the minority as the only time we go to the MDR for BF is on disembarkation day since the WJ is usually a madhouse that morning. Otherwise, we much prefer the WJ. I love the made to order omelets in the WJ but every omelet I've ever ordered in the MDR has been cold & tasteless. Maybe due to the fact it is the last day, but service has always been slow and it's the only time we've received cold food. Plus, I always feel like I have to put myself together a little more for the MDR. :D For the WJ on sea days, I can just throw on a swimsuit & cover-up & go!

I do like the muesli on the cereal bar in the MDR but it is also available in the WJ on most days.

Those are grits. There are some similarities to polenta. A staple hot cereal in the South.

Ah, so it looks and tastes like porridge? It also looks a bit like rice pudding methinks, but anyway it sounds really nice so I think I shall give it a go.

If by porridge you mean what we call oatmeal, then no, it does not taste like porridge, but is similar in consistency. It is not sweet like rice pudding unless you add sugar, syrup, etc.. Grits iin my opinion are very bland and need something either sweet or savory (ie. shrimp and grits..very popular southern fare) to make them palatable.:)

We ALWAYS eat breakfast in the dining room! It's so much nicer than dealing with a buffet, where you are constantly searching for stuff, like syrup, butter, etc.....in the dining room, all that will be on the table, so your food won't get cold while you're scurrying around trying to find what you need!

No it will get cold sitting in the kitchen waiting for the waiter to pick it up and bring it out to your table, or at least that seems to be the best explanation for the cold scoop or scrambled eggs that I have been served in the mdr and the dry, and cold English muffins and toast served by the assistant waiter. Hopefully, the wait staff will have replenished the butter container so you don't have to flag them down to get what you need. Lengthy waits to simply get a bowl of oatmeal is, IMO, inexcusable but is often the rule rather than the exception. Each cruise I try once again to give the MDR another chance to offer the fabulous breakfast experience that some claim to have found and each time I am sorely disappointed. In the WJ I can find exactly what I want, I can carry, not "lug", my plate and silverware to an unoccupied table or ask to join others at their table, and enjoy my breakfast. On Radiance class ships there is the added benefit of being able to dine al fresco in the rear section of the Windjammer Cafe. Wait staff also circulate and will bring you coffee, tea, and juices if you don't want to go to a beverage station to pick up your own.

MDR is absolutely better.

Cooked to order food vs warming tray food? That is a classic no-brainer.

On our recent Liberty cruise, there was also a mini buffet set up, so we could get a plate of fresh fruit, Danish, extra sausage and bacon, etc., etc., if so desired.

We always had a table next to a window, no people reaching over you, cutting in front of you in line, holding up the line debating with themselves what to have, etc. The service was quick, and we were probably done eating as fast as if we had gone to the Windjammer.

One point to make-The MDR is only open for Breakfast until 9:30. We were usually walking out between 9:00 and 9:15. There was always a long line of late arrivals, so plan to get there a little earlier.

Grits are a mass of carbs that taste like whatever you put on them. Eaten mostly in the Southern US. If you've not grown up with them you probably won't like them much.
