WAR ON DRUGS!!! WE NEED TO GET RID OF THE CIGARETTE SMOKER BUT LETS NOT TRY BANNING DRUGS.:eek::eek:
[B] Judging by the billions of dollars we have spent for decades, I think there is very much a war on drugs. Heroin, cocoaine, crack, marijuana in most states, ecstasy, and whatever else they pour into their mouths and veins are all illegal. There IS a WAR on Drugs.

Surely you've heard of some of this?
This reminds me of the lawn watering restrictions we have in our town - twice a week only, odd numbered houses on different days from even numbered, before 9:00 am or after 4:00 pm. It isn't enforced, and is totally ignored by half the town. Your proposal would meet a similar fate.
We have the same watering restrictions during the summer. They do fine those that do not adhere to the restrictions. Good revenue stream (LOL), maybe your town should start enforcing it.

How do you know with certainty it wouldn't work? Can't hurt to try it. Even on no balcony smoking lines, people still smoke. It's effect would be to generally reduce smoking on balconies and give non-smokers something they can hold on to when they call ship services. I see no downside to it when compared to the current policy.
[B] I fully agree there should be a comfortable indoor place for smokers to have their smoke without bothering everyone else. It doesn't have to be fancy or large but has to have excellent ventillation and some comfortable seating.

I do NOT think any steward should be required to enter that smoking section to take drink orders. Anyone who wants a beverage can carry it in with them. NO non-smoker should be required to enter including cleaning staff. Only a smoker should be required to do housekeeping duties.

Non sensible person today denies the risk of second hand smoke.

FYI. On cruise ships, stewards don't take drink orders. They clean cabins.

stop it.............the subect has been jambed down our throats, for too long a time...........please please...please find some thing else to bore us with.
The only comment this reformed smoker made was to wish that smokers could be accommodated comfortably indoors in a dedicated area. If being on your side and wanting to see a fair solution for you is boring and considered as jamming something down your throat, then I am truly at a loss for what to say. I truly apologise for boring you.

[B] FYI <<<<<<

On HAL ships, wine stewards and stewardesses certainly do take drink orders. In MDR, dining stewards so, as well.

In the lounges, bar stewards take drink orders. There are bartenders and bar stewards.

Cabin (housekeeping) stewards clean cabins. ;)

Did you not read our posts in support of a comfortable indoor smoking area?

Please, please, please read where we posted we think HAL should provide an interior place where people can smoke and not bother anyone who does not want to be exposed to it.

Why should we bother to be considerate when this is what we read?!!

My mistake for trying to find a compromise. Sorry. I'll try not to let it happen again.

There were several others that you did not quote, also, including my own. The poster needs to actually read the thread.;) Then they would find out there are some pretty constructive suggestions for the smokers, and some support. Guess not for that one anymore - as you said, why should we bother.....

[B] Yes, there were others who posted positively.
For some odd reason, I usually can only put two quotes in a single post. The three that showed in my response about which you are speaking was because I did a copy and paste of my own. I don't know why if I try to post more than two, the extra ones are dropped.

We certainly got little appreciation for our support. :)

Interesting. I thought it was only down here in Miami where the law was for the other person to obey.

I think its a war we are very much losing. In San Francisco, just to cite one inane example, pharmacies are prohibited from selling tobacco products but every other store on Market Street is selling "medicinal marijuana.

Oceania has a lovely indoor smoking section in Horizons (aka The Crows Nest) with comfy chairs and bar service. It does not have a door to the section. Although there is glass on all sides save the entrance, therefore some smoke may escape to the port side of Horizons. That being the case, you can still avoid it. A win-win IMO.

[B] I agree. Ridiculous.
I am not sure if it is a city of state law but in a few cities I know of in MA, any store that has any health care related department (such as a pharmacy inside a grocery store) cannot sell tobacco products.

Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens etc cannot sell tobacco products.
However, we voted to decriminalize marijuana and medicinal dispenseries are being developed.

[B] When Zuiderdam (the first of the Vista Class ships) joined the fleet, she had exactly that sort of glass cage. It was not popular, was actually pretty disgusting IMO and was removed rather quickly. It did not appear on the sister ships which were subsequently built.

I have been smoke free for 10 months now. I truly never realized the smell of cigarettes! I am not going to be one of those reformed smokers that hate smokers! No way! I understand the addiction far too well.

However, I do feel that HA should consider going with trend and not allow smoking on balcony's. I feel there should be a few different smoking areas on all ships. A nice area inside for smokers should be a must. A "smoking passenger" pays the same amount that a "non smoking passenger" does for the cruise and should be accommodated.

I really don't know how to handle casino smoking. Just because you have one or two nights smoke free does not make the casino less ashtray smelling.

What about my proposal for odd/even days, odd/even hours? Wouldn't that allow you (as a non-smoker) and smokers to enjoy their verandahs?
On one cruise we could not use our verandah at all. The woman in the cabin next to us sat right by our partition and smoked all morning, all day and late into the night -- one cigarette after another. Her husband sat at the far end of the verandah -- away from her or sat inside. They had their meals delivered. Bad situation. And between smokes she coughed a lot.
Congratulations! It's so tough to quit, I understand it all too well. Your post sums it all up, and reconfirms what many of us have said about providing a safe, enclosed space for smokers.
