Can someone please tell me on this five day trip to Halifax what the dress code is for the evenings? Also, I am sure not everyone gets off the ship whilst it is in port, what exactly is open as far as restaurant's, shops etc.? Hope it is still warm enough to sit up on deck and relax...........This trip leaves New York on September 1st.

Dress code is the same on all cruises.

You can wear what you want when you want, with specific types of dress required for the MDR.

It may be chilly then so you'll want some sort of cover up or jacket for on deck, however he temperature inside is the same as any cruise.

Shops and casino close when in port.

I don't know about on ship, shops and casino are usually closed when in port for any ship I've been on.

As for weather, I am from the East coast. September is tricky. Summer can often last well into September with beautiful warm weather. The past two years, it seems that there was a quick turn and the weather was cooler. It will still likely be comfortable and nice, not overly hot though but expect the evening temps to drop.

We did this same cruise on Sept 1, 2013 on the Glory.

Dress code is casual, the same as it is for every other cruise.

The shops and casinos are closed while in port.

Don't know what there is to do near the port since we hired a driver in both ports for a private tour.

The weather, when we went last year it was foggy most of the time. The fog horn on the ship sounded every few minutes while the ship was moving. It was either foggy or rainy in the two ports but we still had a good time. You can't control the weather so might as well go with the flow.

We are going on the Splendor the end of September doing the 7 day cruise to Canada.

After a dozen cruises over many years to various ports this was the most disappointing weather we ever experienced. But we still had a great time and some photos to look back on where I didn't have to worry about the focus or color.

We did get some breaks in the weather to get some colorful shots at Peggy's Cove.

Enjoy your cruise and bring light weight clothing that can be layered. I live in New York and the beginning of September is usually pretty warm still.

Weather in Halifax and St. John at that time of the year is TOTALLY UNPREDICTABLE...

Be prepared for just about anything except snow.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I think I should have been more direct what I really wanted to know was about formal evenings....do they still have them and if so how many. I did the trip to St. John's two year's ago but that was in July and the weather was beautiful. Now I am thinking about changing the date as all I can think about is being out in deck, being totally lazy and am now a tad bit concerned about the weather.

We've done the Canada cruises 7 times - 5 5-day, 2 4-day. The time of our cruises has varied between late June and Labor Day. Both 4-day cruises were over Labor Day weekend and both were impacted by tropical storms (TS Eduardo in 2006, Hurricane Earl in 2010). The temperature, though, was nice. And on our August 5-day cruises, by looking at the Lido Deck you would have sworn you were on a Caribbean cruise, not a Canada cruise.

As for "formal" night - now it's called "elegant" night. There's just one on a 5-day cruise. DH and sons wear slacks, button-down shirt, jacket and tie. A lot of men skip the jacket. I wear a cocktail dress.

July can be hit and miss too. I usually pick August for my work vacation hoping to get some nice weather.

You know what they say about weather in Halifax..

It's one of the few places where you can experience all four seasons in one day! :D

We've done this (7-day, Carnival Glory) trip twice now.

October of 2011 and September of 2013.

NYC -Boston -Portland,ME -St.John,NB -Halifax -and back to NYC

Strangely, the temps were warmer on the October trip

whereas the September cruise was cooler.

So it's anyone's guess, really!

I did the 7 day on Glory out of NYC on Sept 22, 2012. I did walking tours on my own at both St John and Halifax. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance of the ship at both ports. Make sure you vistit the Citadel in Halifax. Great views of the city and a lot of History of the city.

The weather in St John was rainy and in the upper 50's that day. Halifax was sunny and warmer, closer to the mid 60's and windy.

Both were great ports. You will enjoy them.

As far as clothing, I suggest pants, long & short sleeve shirts and a light jacket. Dress in layers and later in the day and after walking, you may feel warm and then you can just take off the layers. I did not need shorts at any of the 4 ports during the 3rd week of Sept. The ports were Boston, Portland, St John and Halifax.

I went to Canada end of September, mid June and beginning of July. Weather really varied. I would say definitely bring shorts because early September can be very warm in the states and Canada. For the summer cruises it was very foggy and chilly at night so bring a jacket or sweater as well.

You really need to pack for two seasons. We have had better weather later in the season.

One controlling factor is the Gulf Stream, which is warmest in September and October. therefore, the odds of having fog decreases immensely, but can quickly be overridden by any weather patterns coming from the west, or worse, northwest.

I'll be on this cruise also and will be packing "a lttle bit of everything" as weather can never be predetermined.

I did the same itinerary some years back (same date, Sept 1) and it went from sunny to rainy every day. It was also nice enough to sit by the pool and use the hot tubs so bring a bathing suit too!!

Elegant night is usually the first sea day evening (Day2) on a 5 day so I'm guessing it's the same for this one.

The year I was on the Alaska cruise in late September it was almost 80 degrees every day so you never know....I still pack layers!!

Where did your private driver take you in St. John?

Which sailing are you on this September?

Thanks.
