SPacificbound Posted March 22, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 22, 2014 We are thinking of changing our October 2015 Med and Transatlantic from RC Vision to Island Princess. Please tell me all about Island Princess. The good, the bad, etc. Thank you!! :)
Colo Cruiser Posted March 22, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) Sister ships Island/Coral are excellent. They only carry approx 1900 passengers versus 2800-3300 for other Princess ships! And they are actually a little longer then the Grand Class ships. Both are Panamax ships built specifically for the Panama Canal. Great onboard venues and style that is similar to other Princess ships. We are considering the Island Med/transatlantic too. Great iteniaries! You will not be disappointed. Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted March 22, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 22, 2014 I have been hoping that Island or Coral would transfer to Europe, so these new itineraries are very welcome. We love those ships.
skynight Posted March 22, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 22, 2014 The Island Princess is scheduled for a Trans Atlantic in March 2015 to Venice. Once there she will have an extensive dry dock about 6 weeks. It's not a scrape and paint dry dock. It's a major re-do. So, some of what you see now on the deck plans will change. Speculation: Adding an International Cafe Redoing the Horizon Ct. Buffet (On the Island the buffet is up front with nice forward views). Adding cabins. Where? There is some speculation that the Universe Lounge may be re-done. It's 2 story now. So if you take this ship in Oct 2015 you will have the latest version, with all the new stuff on an already really nice ship with lots of public space. Nancyquilts Posted March 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 23, 2014 Imho, the Island and Coral have the best show with "On the bayou". Be sure to see it.

Coral had an extensive drydock in 2013 that added IC and additional cabins -- all taken from the casino. HC was renovated. As a result the ship gained an important new feature and did not feel like it lost anything. No changes to the Universe Lounge. Is there reason to assume that this Island drydock will be other than a catchup to keep the sisters in sync?
uababs Posted March 23, 2014 #9 Share Posted March 23, 2014 Just off Island Princess, Panama Canal full transit. Out of 5 cruises, this is our favorite ship! Love the all-the-way-around true Promenade deck! Very easy to get around, once you figure out that the forward elevators only go down to deck 7, then you need to walk to midship to walk down or take the glass elevators to 4/5/6. The ship never felt crowded, unless you were at the theater or Horizon Court at peak times. "Secret" aft decks on 9 and 10 (maybe others) have loungers and are covered for hanging out while doing laundry! Our cabin was very far forward and the walk back and forth from the laundry felt like 10 miles, so I just chilled on the aft deck with a good book. And the forward deck on 10 was awesome for viewing our Canal transit (although no loungers). Already thinking about another trip on this wonderful ship! Is there reason to assume that this Island drydock will be other than a catchup to keep the sisters in sync?It has been posted that the IC on the Island will be on Plaza deck like other ships rather than off the Casino on Fiesta deck. Almost a given that the HC will be modified like the Coral. It has also been posted that 100 cabins will be added with many if them coming from a revised Universe Lounge area. Anything can and might change within the next year however. Some of the proposed changes to the Sapphire that were shown on the Cruise Atlas were not actually done in her last drydock. Rocknie Posted March 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 23, 2014 Sailed aboard the Island to PC in October. It was the best cruise we have ever taken... in large part because of the ship. With only 1900 passengers we never felt like we were in a herd of cattle... in fact I never remember waiting in line for anything on-board, except, of course, elevators and that wait was far shorter then we've experience on other ships. We could always find a seat at a bar day or night. Even on sea days we had no problem finding lounge chairs around the pool. I do wish Princess would invest more in their balcony furniture, rather cheap and not very comfortable! It was truly a wonderful ship to cruise on, we loved the ship so much, we book an Alaska cruise aboard the Coral before we left the ship.

I looked up the cabin I had booked and it had no cover or overhang at all. I called Princess and chose a different cabin that is covered. :)
DrivesLikeMario Posted March 23, 2014 #15 Share Posted March 23, 2014 What do you want to know? IMO, you made a fantastic choice. The Vision is old and small, the Island is gorgeous, sleek and well-made. You'll notice the difference between these 2 ships in the little things - the way the Island is appointed with wood and lots of light. It just looks and feels so much more elegant. The atmosphere feels more upscale too. I hope you enjoy it - this class of ship is a fan favorite of Princess cruisers.
