JohnS43 Posted April 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2014 None of the message boards seems to have an option for general questions regarding Cruise Critic (not the forum, but the website itself.) The only one that seems like a possibility on its face is "Cruise Blogs and Websites," but when you go there, it's apparently for people to post information from their own travels. My question is about using CC's search function. Where can I ask that question?
cherylandtk Posted April 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 9, 2014 (edited) There is a blue highlighted bar at the top of the main forum listing that says something like "Guidelines and Forum Help". Here is direct link, that is the place to ask your sort of question. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=52 Edited April 9, 2014 by cherylandtk
leaveitallbehind Posted April 9, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 9, 2014 What would you like to learn about the search function? Maybe the CC members could help.
UPGrandma Posted April 9, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 9, 2014 There is a blue colored section at the top of the page that lists all the "forums". Some of the "sticky" messages from CC staff also give you a lot of information. Hope one of these spots are helpful.

JohnS43 Posted April 9, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Thank you for your responses, but my question is NOT about the forums or their guidelines. It's about Cruise Critic itself, and the search function to find cruises. I still can't find anywhere in the forums where I can post such a question. JohnS43 Posted April 9, 2014 Author #7 Share Posted April 9, 2014 What would you like to learn about the search function? Maybe the CC members could help. OK, thanks. At the risk of this question being inappropriately placed, here goes: When I tried to search Cruise Critic for a repositioning cruise, I selected "repositioning" under the destination drop-down and left all of the others (date, cruise line, etc.) at their default (i.e. "any") positions. The result: Only five cruises showed up, all on Royal Caribbean. I KNOW there are likely dozens of repositioning cruises in the next two years -- why don't they show up? Rare LHT28 Posted April 9, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Under the same menu try TRANSATLANTIC TRANSPACIFIC depending on where you want to go There are options like Panama Canal as the ships reposition to the east or west coast
Mary Ellen Posted April 9, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 9, 2014 We've also done a repositioning cruise between So. Cal (where the ship had been doing Mexico and Hawaii cruises during the winter) to Vancouver, BC (for the summer Alaska season). Another was from Sydney (winter in the Oz/NZ market) to Singapore (Asia for the summer). We have a friend currently on her way to Sydney for a repositioning cruise to Vancouver. You need to have some idea of where the ships spend the seasons and when those seasons change. I've never seen a category of "repositioning" in cruise calendars or search engines. Some ideas you need to look for are categories like transAtlantic, transPacific (as previously mentioned), or coastal cruises. Good luck.

Mary Ellen: Go to the main page of Cruise Critic, to the FIND A CRUISE tab. Then the drop-down under "Destinations." Between "Panama Canal" and "Russia River" is "REPOSITIONING". This is what I used when I got the five RCCL cruises (and nothing else.) Edited April 9, 2014 by JohnS43

Between "Panama Canal" and "Russia River" is "REPOSITIONING". This is what I used when I got the five RCCL cruises (and nothing else.) Not all cruise lines tag or categorize their relevant cruises as "repositioning." And, indeed, one can get into quite an argument as to just what is or isn't a "repositioning" cruise. Some travel agent sites may handle this better, but it's probably best to simply know when/where to look: most often ships moving out of the Caribbean in the spring headed to Alaska or Europe, and the reverse in the fall. And, of course, there are other destination combinations possible. On the west coast many such cruises are called "pacific coastals."

Thanks, John, but the CC is not someplace I go for this type of info. Your search demonstrates how unreliable it is. ;)
leaveitallbehind Posted April 9, 2014 #14 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Could also have to do with advertising $ spent by RCI and relationship with CC... Just speculating.
Cruisin' Chick Posted April 9, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Personally, if I wanted to find a repo cruise and I knew which cruise line, I would go on that website and do a search there (say, a coastal cruise, if looking for a cruise going from LA to the Northwest in May). If I don't have a preference for a specific line, I would just consider what area and go on a travel agency website (we can't mention those) and not search on "repo" but look at the embarkation/disembarkation ports -- you already can guess that a roundtrip cruise isn't going to be a repo. Or go to a cruise specialist agency with the destination and dates in mind. They can help you out and even book it for you.
Administrators Rare LauraS Posted April 9, 2014 Administrators #16 Share Posted April 9, 2014 Could also have to do with advertising $ spent by RCI and relationship with CC... Just speculating. Where do people come up w/ this stuff. Advertising and RCI?? Not true at all. We utilize a cruise search engine (of sorts) for this information. What goes in, comes out. And, we don't put it in there. I will pass along your info to our Prod Dev team, though, so they can pass it along to those that maintain that database.
