ksadonnab Posted May 8, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 8, 2014 I'll be taking my grandson on his very first cruise this year. Any suggestions/ideas to make check in as painless as possible. I know I will need special documents in order for him to board, please help me with them. I am actually petrified that we will be denied boarding because of one item I do not have. Also, another issue that worries me is that my daughther (his mom) is now re-married so her last name is NOT the same as his. Please help me dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" :)

sweetpea1714 Posted May 8, 2014 #4 Share Posted May 8, 2014 If you are the only adult in your party I believe the kid needs a passport. You also should secure written and notarized letters with permission to travel from the mom and dad. You need both.
uksimonusa Posted May 8, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 8, 2014 If you are the only adult in your party I believe the kid needs a passport. You also should secure written and notarized letters with permission to travel from the mom and dad. You need both. No passport needed for American Citizens on a closed loop cruise, irrespective of the amount of adults travelling. A birth certificate issued by an American State, is fine for children under 16, those over 16 will also need a government issued ID. A notarized permission letter should also include permission to sign waivers for sports events etc. and to give medical permission.

A US citizen does not need a passport to travel on a closed loop cruise no matter what their age or who is in their party. Can you provide a link to where you are seeing a passport is needed? Please help me dot the "i's" and cross the "t's" :) It sounds like your grandson's parents are not together anymore. In that case, you will likely need a document from both parents saying it is ok for him to travel with you. That being said, I have never been asked for the documentation but I have always had it with me, because like you said, I would hate to be turned away because of it! Folks have been asked, just stating that I am not one of them! Sounds like a fun time - enjoy!
cb at sea Posted May 9, 2014 #9 Share Posted May 9, 2014 All you need is his BC, and a letter from his parent/s allowing him to travel with you. That's it.
uksimonusa Posted May 9, 2014 #10 Share Posted May 9, 2014 All you need is his BC, and a letter from his parent/s allowing him to travel with you. That's it. The letter needs more than just allowing him to travel, it also needs to give permission to sign waivers and most importantly to authorize medical treatment, should it be needed. It also needs to be notarized. Now That's it!!
TEXASMUNK Posted May 9, 2014 #11 Share Posted May 9, 2014 Yes. Same letter from both. One each...Plus, as a safety measure, have both give you authorization for medical treatment. This covers all the bases. And no, we take our grandson, in the same situation as you, no passport needed.
