7day solo cruise on NCL Gem from NYC to Canada in Sept 2014.

it's free from my casino but I'm paying $350 in port fees + taxes.

if I don't go onto the trip, I only forfeit the port fee ($185). the taxes get refunded.

I also have my own health insurance.

when I booked my cruise via NCL, the lady on the phone said the trip insurance is $29. she said the major thing is being air lifted off the cruise ship which runs $10k+.

Worth it???

(I'm thinking no?)

If you contact your health insurance provider and they tell you that you are covered while in Canada - then no worries.

If, however, they tell you that you will not be covered in Canada- then you

are getting a cheap enough rate to get the insurance if you choose.

Have a great cruise, Maryandi

I'm more concerned w/medical evac.

hm.. Square Mouth lists Seven corners as cheapest at $9 for medical evac only. $300k coverage.

cheaper than the $29 from NCL directly.

Go 3rd party?

I wouldn't get insurance if your regular insurance covers you in Canada.

And the "NCL lady" was wrong. If evac off the ship can be done at all (and it's VERY rare, as it's usually not a good idea and/or not practical) it's virtually always done by the Coast Guard free of charge. (No private evac insurance will cover evac off the ship, as in most parts of the world they'd be unable to provide such a service.)

While some 3rd-party MedEvac-only plans will evac you to the hospital of your choice, most policies will just evac you to the "nearest suitable facility". In Canada, no sort of "evac" outside of an ambulance ride should be necessary.

I agree.

I wouldn't worry about insuring the small investment but would be more concerned about emergency evacuation.
