My humble NYC parking instructions !

From our experience at the Manhatten Port, these directions are perfect.

If you are parking soon after debarkation, there is usually a few stray luggage carts in the lot too.

Although the price is crazy, still cheaper than parking in Manhatten lots. (Larger SUV...) and very much worth it for the ease, if you are lucky to find cheaper parking elsewhere, but then you have to include taxi, etc. to get to the ship...

OP is incredibly helpful! Thank you. One question -- if we are on the breakaway and it is at pier 88, are there separate entrances for parking on top of pier 88 rather than 90? If not, and you enter on pier 90, I don't quite understand what you mean by making a "u-turn" and go down ramp to get to 88 from 90. Are these parking structures connected somehow? Thanks again!

There's one motor vehicle entrance to the cruise terminal complex, and its at 55th St. and 12th Ave. Follow the signs and drive up the ramp to the parking level. The parking lot for each pier is on its roof, and Pier 88 will be the last pier in the complex.

The u turn the OP is referring to is that they normally collect the parking fee before you're allowed to drive to the entrance of the Pier 88 parking lot...usually at Pier 92 (I know he said Pier 90, but normally it's at 92), and then you have to turn your car around and exit Pier 92 to continue on to Pier 88. Don't get hung up on how it's worded and the "u turn". It will be obvious when you get there. The parking lot attendants will point you in the right direction.

What you don't want to do is drive up to the main entrance of Pier 88, which is one level below the rooftop parking deck. If you go there it's impossible to get directly to the parking lot on the roof. You would have to exit the cruise terminal and come back north on 12th Ave to 55th St. in order to reenter the cruise terminal.

I've sailed out of NY before, but I've always had a ride back and forth. Going to be doing the trip alone July 18 and printed out the directions - they look simple enough even for me:) Also printed the coupon for 25% off for Gem sailings. Thanks so much for the great directions!!

I am printing the directions - sounds easy enough. However, is there a chance there will not be space available and then what happens? That is why I was considering making a reservation at another parking garage although not as close. We will have 3 cars.

A new issue to worry about(most times the problem is non-existent) especially when I am taking 3 families.

Thanks for any info one might have.

What time do you plan to arrive at MCT - disembarkation for pax heading home usually start around 8 AM and there will be lots of vacant & good parking spaces nearest to the elevators - if you time to be there around 10 AM, give or take. It's a huge outdoor/rooftop parking lot - I wouldn't worry not having space for 3 vehicles.

In the unlikely event of the lot being full, they have plans to have vehicles parked on the other rooftop parking area as spillover.

Have not heard or read anything about the parking being full in the past. About 1 hour after the debarkation process begins for the ship that comes in the morning you will easily find parking.

I usually arrive around 9am at the pier and there is plenty of spaces available already and the parking empties a couple of hours later when the ship is completely empty.

There is parking available on the 3 piers and they do have an "overflow" parking area offsite if necessary ( never heard of anyone having to park there ) and they sometimes have cars parked on the side of the way between the 3 piers rooftop ( sometimes you can see cars on the live bow cam of the ship that is docked ).

So basically, don't worry about spaces.

Have a fantastic trip !

I forget - can you pay cash?

I think I paid bia CC and they just took it and we drove right in but if you pay, I seem to remember you have to que in a different line to pay the cash...

Any one?

Cash, Visa and MasterCard are accepted. There's only one booth where you pay and one lane of traffic to get to it. AFAIK the only exception was when they were having a problem processing credit cards.

We are dropping off my son and his gf this Sunday at the terminal for their cruise. I was wondering if you can park at the cruise terminal parking and drop them off then leave the car there for the day? I was thinking about going to the Intrepid museum and checking it out for a few hours.

They list a daily rate for up to 10 hours for drop off and visitors.

Parking Rates Effective January 2016

Daily Rate: Up to 10 Hours

(For drop offs/visitors) $35.00

In theory you could, but you can usually do better by parking elsewhere. For example, try ParkRight on West 43rd. St. near 12th Ave. You should be able to park for about $25. You can look for parking near the Intrepid on this site:

You might even be able to find street parking on a Sunday morning.

Since this is a very common question, I will try to give you MY take on parking at the Manhattan cruise terminal.

Is it expensive ? YES ! Is it easy of use ? YES ! Is it worth it ? YES !

Would I park in a nearby parking lot and save between 40$ to 90$ for the week ? NO!

Why then ? In my case I have a long...very long drive back home and I want the easy use of my car as soon as I leave the ship and the hassle free parking solution that the Pier offers me is a "good value" still.

How to "use" the terminal parking :

For the latest rates and information you can "clic" on this link to the official NY Cruise terminal : http://www.nycruise.com/manhattan-terminal/parking/

More often then not, traffic will be monster when exodus happens. On the map you will see a black line over 12th Avenue (9A) in the NORTH direction where the traffic is the worst. This is caused by a heavy carload coming from the Lincoln Tunnel as almost all cars will turn left on 42nd street and then right on 9A NORTH. This heavy traffic will make you loose around 30 minutes just from 46th street to 55th street where you can turn left and enter terminal.

The better way, if you are arriving FROM the South, is arriving on 55th or 57th street via 10th avenue because you can enter the terminal directly from both of those streets.

Ok now you enter the terminal...excitement builds up...you are so close to the ship and that cruise you have been planning for months if not years !!! and yet you are so far away...

The far right lane is for buses ONLY, you must use the "all cars" lane on the left and go up one level.

RAMP1_zpse28cf0d9.jpg

2 choices are now in front of you :

1- you hang LEFT and enter the Terminal Drop Off zone. You can go there to drop passengers and luggage. The only problem with this is that you HAVE to exit the terminal at 46th street and then you have to engage in traffic and go up to 55th and turn left again to enter AGAIN the Terminal and make your way to the parking.

2- You go up the ramp one level and right away make a right and go up the ramp to parking level. ( this is the preferred way suggested by the NY Cruise Terminal ).

I am sorry about the poor image quality.

p><p><img src=[/img]

You can clic on the image and zoom on it to have a better look of the pointers I did.

So if you visited the drop off level before, just go and park ! Voila ! let the vacation begin !! Do not forget to take picture of the ship, you in front of the ship, etc... Make your way to the freight elevator and go down one level to security and check-in....YES your are now on vacation!

If you opted to go to parking level directly ( the better choice ;) IMO ) and there is NO queue behind you, you might IF POSSIBLE pull right just after the dog and QUICKLY drop passengers and luggage. This is very close to the elevator and there is a sidewalk there. If there is a queue or you are instructed to, just park in the nearest available space and roll your luggage to the elevator. Worst case scenario, you are not that far anyways. Get the elevator ( sometimes if a porter is helping someone with their luggage TO the parking lot, you can get him to help you FROM the parking lot and take your luggage to the check-in area for you..with the 2$ per luggage regular fee of course ). You go down one level, exit elevator to your left and make an other left to reach the porters and hand them the luggage. You get back in the terminal and make the line for the security/check-in ....

VOILA ! Let an other, or first, amazing cruise begin !

When we cruise we always go with "self debarkation" and exit the ship in the first group. This way we avoid a long line at the immigration counter and we walk fast to the elevator to reach the parking level. Normally we reach the parking level within 15 minutes of leaving the ship....and we are on the road for 7 hours to get back home !

I hope it helps, I made it the most accurate I could...If there are some problems with it I will update it.

Thank you this is great
