Balcony Smoking on Carnival

I really like the explanation for banning e-cigarettes. It's nice to see an announcement that is easy to understand and covers all the "what about this" and "why" questions.

Especially the part where they talk about non-smokers perception of e-cigs.

Rather insulting, in my opinion.

They obviously think:

A) non-smokers are not very intelligent or

B) simply enjoy complaining

ha ha...while B) didn't come right to mind....A) sure did...

Wonder if they will ban kids from having apple juice in see thru containers as some might think it to be beer :D

Wonder what the reaction would be if someone were to be walking around with one of those old-fashioned "cigarette" candies? :D

Can you even still buy them anywhere?

Yes I have actually seen not only the candy cigarettes but the old fashioned Bubble Gum cigars not too long ago .

I remember being surprised they were still around with they way things are today.

So with NCL announcing balcony smoking ban today HAL will be the last to ban. Come on HAL. Get with it.

Yes, HAL! Please stop smoking on balconies so people here can start complaining about the smoke in the casino or the smoke from an outside designated area billowing up to their balcony. The balcony smoking issue here has gotten old. The complainers need some new material!

IIRC, the bubble gum cigars were pink; they would never fake anyone out. But the candy cigarettes could possibly.

I Googled them and found they are available (called "candy sticks" now), but not with the red tip. Might be fun to buy some, and carry them through the non-smoking areas of the ship. :D

Yes. They still make the candy cigarettes. But I guess if people get freaked out by the shape of the e-cigarettes, we should look at banning pens and pencils, especially golf pencils. Gonna have to get rid of those port stops in Greece, Turkey, Eastern Europe, and Asia, too. ;)

I remember the candy cigarettes. They were pure sugar.

I always thought they were chalk. As I got older, I changed my mind and am pretty sure that they're made of the same stuff as Rolaids or Tums. They have that vaguely pepperminty, chalky taste.

If you are ever in Kittery, Maine, visit Yummies on Route 1. In the meantime, visit this site:

Peruse the candy of your youth. If your heart is not warmed, and you still want to fight about smoking, then you probably had a sad childhood. :(

I think that HAL is probably the most conservative and "old school" of all mainstream lines, which can be good or bad depending on your point of view. So it looks like they will be the last to ban smoking on balconies, and my guess is the last to eventually ban it ship-wide.

The last time there was a grouping of changes in smoking policy like this was when a number of lines banned in cabin smoking a few years ago. HAL was the last to make the change, but did so within about 6 months of the others if I recall correctly.

Thanks POA, it did make me smile. Looking at all those candies from my childhood, love the candy cigars, very cute. You can get them for having a baby boy (blue) and ofcouse pink for a girl, pretty cool I think.

That's right...they were pink, green, blue (depending on flavor maybe) But I am sure the candy cigs would get someones knickers in a twist on first glance :)

I have been using an e cig that looks exactly like a real cigarette (Njoy is the brand) . So far haven't gotten the stink eye yet. But I really haven't used it anywhere indoors except my house.

That is SO funny you would say Kittery today. My girlfriend and her DH had not been there in years and just yesterday, spur of the moment, drove there. They had a great day. :)

Yummies! Any candy from your penny candy days can be found there. You can order online too. You brought back great memories as this was a first stop on our Maine vacations when my children were little. Mom letting them buy candy! They still talk about it.

.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. .

Wow, that's a pretty tough policy that Lisa posted for NCL's new policy - no e-cigarettes in your stateroom? Based on the fact that you do not have to invite anyone into your stateroom if you don't want to, what possible harm could that do anyone? Who would see you to complain?

I've used an e-cig for more than four years and have done a cruise each year. Use common sense and discretion and you will not have an issue while actually aboard. Here on CC is another matter.;)

We can't wait to get back to Maine. I'm not sure whose bright idea it was to stay in Florida in July. Oh, wait. It was mine.

A few more weeks... Then we'll have a propuh summuh.

Thank you Toad - I echo your thoughts.

smokers/non-smokers who have dug their heels in so deep that they cannot move an inch. Enough - too much negativity for me.

Take care and enjoy your cruising...

Well sorry Jadona that you have difficulty with the rhetoric heat. Can't blame you really in some respects, but then, with information of value comes a little discomfort come from time to time. I put up with it, and believe to clam up on some of these subjects can result in negative outcomes without having any input whatsoever (for me anyway).

Now, on the smoking front, from time to time I have posted regarding this issue. Not ever a smoker myself I put up with smoking on ship-board in certain circumstances, but I really can understand the extreme problems non-smokers have and I really understand their difficulties.

Unlike yourself, who can utter the simple statement: "smokers/non-smokers who have dug in their heels in so deep that they cannot move an inch" as if the dispute, regardless of which side of the argument, is of equal discomfort to you and then move on and quit the boards, with a sanctimonious, "have fun everyone". I have to wonder what message it is you attempt to convey to us all.

Is it: Smokers and non-smokers are equally at fault in these discussions? Therefore, both should just shut up and be happy and enjoy the cruise? In other words, non-smokers should just sit back and inhale the second hand crap the smokers send their way? To do otherwise makes life and this discussion unpleasant for you? So, in your mind, smokers keep on doing the same, non-smokers, quit your complaining?

This is the official word that just came out this morning regarding Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Dear Lisa,

As the health and well–being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Norwegian’s complete smoking policy, can be found here.

What about smoking on the ship?

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

:) Sure hope it happens soon!
