runner2013 Posted August 29, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2014 Hello all, I'm curious about the photo taken when you first board. Does it have to be done or can you just politely keep walking and opt out? This will be my first solo trip and I'm honestly not sure I want to do it. Any advice much appreciated Thanks
Cairnmom Posted August 29, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2014 Hello all, I'm curious about the photo taken when you first board. Does it have to be done or can you just politely keep walking and opt out? This will be my first solo trip and I'm honestly not sure I want to do it. Any advice much appreciated Thanks You can always opt out. My understanding is the photographers get paid based on how many pictures they take. Whether you purchase or not. So I usually let them snap the shot although I know I'm not buying. justfriends340 Posted August 30, 2014 #3 Share Posted August 30, 2014 I never take photos...just smile and keep walking. ☺
Rare Lois R Posted August 30, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Yes, you can definitely opt out. I do it every cruise. I normally just walk behind the photographer, and just keep walking.;)
cruiseelady Posted August 30, 2014 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2014 Great question! As others said you can definitely just keep walking and not take the picture. I just say no thanks with a smile without even slowing down.
mtwingcpa Posted August 30, 2014 #6 Share Posted August 30, 2014 I usually walk through, thereby opting out. The problem is, sometimes there's a line/backup and it's not clear how you can politely walk around it...say, without having to ask other passengers to step aside and let you through. :-(
travelnap Posted August 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 30, 2014 I agree with the others, just smile and wave as you walk through or behind the photographer and just skip the picture. If there is a line and you can't get behind them, I just wait and walk through when it is my turn. Never had a problem, same goes for the ports getting off and on the ship. The problem is, sometimes there's a line/backup and it's not clear how you can politely walk around it...say, without having to ask other passengers to step aside and let you through. :-( I have never had an issue with a line and/or backup. I know there are always photographers trying to get folks to stop for pictures though:eek: I know it is their job but if there are people waiting? I just say excuse me.....I will smile and say I am not butting in line....I am just passing through to get to the gangway:D......there is no other way around it......"excuse me" is what I would use if needed;)
marcmarc2 Posted August 31, 2014 #9 Share Posted August 31, 2014 The longer I cruise, the more I tend to bypass the photographers. That being said, *if* the opportunity presents itself, I will smile and ask a handsome nearby crew member to pose with me. :D
headhunterke Posted August 31, 2014 #10 Share Posted August 31, 2014 I've only taken a picture twice. Once was on the first time we cruised and the second one on my last cruise when one of the photographers recognised me. I even ended buying that second picture as appreciation for his work. 1jazzylady1 Posted August 31, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 31, 2014 Yes you can opt out. I like having it as a record the date and ship is there and it is for an album. Or if I don't like the pic I don't buy it. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
TruckerDave Posted September 1, 2014 #12 Share Posted September 1, 2014 It takes like 5 seconds...what is the big deal? Let then snap the picture and then keep going.
Rare Lois R Posted September 1, 2014 #13 Share Posted September 1, 2014 It takes like 5 seconds...what is the big deal? Let then snap the picture and then keep going. Hi Dave, you are correct, it is no big deal at all. I just say excuse me, and keep walking. That is no big deal either.:)......as for being 5 seconds? Actually, I have seen lines where folks are standing and it looks like it would be closer to 15 minutes....but that is besides the point. Not everyone prefers to have their photo taken upon arrival. No big deal at all:D

Even if they are recycled, why give extra work? If I know for sure I have no interest in buying, why do it?
1jazzylady1 Posted September 2, 2014 #15 Share Posted September 2, 2014 I know some people are paranoid and don't their photo taken. Just say no and keep it moving. There is a photo stored of each passenger that you have no choice in. Is for safety.📷 Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Valen9 Posted September 3, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 3, 2014 It takes like 5 seconds...what is the big deal? Let then snap the picture and then keep going. Sure, YOUR photo is 5 seconds. What I resent is standing in that line for 20 minutes because I can't see how to get onto the ship without waiting for everyone ELSE stopping for photos. Now that I have more cruises under my belt, I am better at spotting when the holdup in the photo stop, and just pushing my way through. Of course, I cruise out of New York a lot, where that sort of thing is an art form! :)
canuckcruzingirl Posted September 7, 2014 #18 Share Posted September 7, 2014 I agree with the response from "evandbob" - as a woman travelling on her own most of the time, I do not want it advertised to the whole ship that I embarked alone....... just a personal security thing for me. mkbnoc Posted September 8, 2014 #20 Share Posted September 8, 2014 Great question! As others said you can definitely just keep walking and not take the picture. I just say no thanks with a smile without even slowing down. I second this. I have been on five cruises now and still not a picture taken Except the security photo attached to your sign and sail card. Just a quick smile, no thank you and keep moving. Having your photo taken is totally optional.
Splinter Posted September 8, 2014 #21 Share Posted September 8, 2014 I agree. I did a photo on my first cruise, but never since. Just walk on by and keep moving. In addition to my objection to the outrageous prices they charge for these photos, I never look my best during embarkation (esp. if just arrived on a long-distance flight), so I know I would never purchase the photo. If I want a photo of myself at embarkation, I can take a digital "selfie" for free.
Rare Scrapnana Posted September 9, 2014 #22 Share Posted September 9, 2014 The embarkation photo is one of the few I have taken/buy. It makes a great first page for my cruise scrapbook.

Even if they are recycled, why give extra work? If I know for sure I have no interest in buying, why do it? Completely agree. I will only let them take my photo if I think I might buy them. Formal nights is when I usually do it. I am not the picture buying kind of person so why would I bother?
crusinpsychRN Posted September 21, 2014 #24 Share Posted September 21, 2014 I did one embarkation pic when I had Carnival make me a tshirt with the front reading: Carnival...Unfair to Solos!
