Really? Many fires ? :roll eyes: I would be interested in your source for this info. I acknowledge that even one fire is one too many, but, please, this is a little over the top. JMO.

25 Years In The Navy and every sailor knows your worst fear on a ship at sea is a fire. You can not get away, you can not call the fire department. You are the fire department.

Here is ONE TO MANY

Reported by NBC NEWS

March 23, 2006

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — A fire apparently started by a cigarette broke out aboard a giant cruise ship early Thursday as it sailed through the moonlit Caribbean, leaving one passenger dead, 11 people injured and at least 100 rooms scorched.

The Star Princess, carrying 2,690 passengers and 1,123 crew members, bore evidence of the nighttime drama as it pulled into Montego Bay’s port. About 85 exterior cabins were blackened from the fire, a stark contrast to the otherwise gleaming white exterior of the ship. Metal was twisted, evidence of the heat of the blaze.

“We consider ourselves very lucky,” Klemens Fass, of Toronto, Canada, told The Associated Press after he and his wife were evacuated with other some passengers. “When we got out of our stateroom ... there was someone lying in the hallway passed out. He was being attended to but it was very, very scary.”

A smoldering cigarette is suspected as the cause of the blaze, said Horace Peterkin, president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association, who toured the ship after it docked here.

Cruise LAW News in 2010 reported The cause of the fire was a cigarette being flicked over an upper balcony. Some of the Princess cruise ships are designed with the balconies of the lower cabins jutting out (photographs below).

If smoking is so danergous on cruise ships, why haven't they banned it ship wide? You can smoke in the casino and various other places around the ship. If customer safety is the primary goal I wonder why they still allow smoking on board? Don't flick your butt over the side. I put mine out in a glass of water.

I am stipulating in my hypothetical that no one is being bothered. So if no one is being bothered, than it should be no concern of yours or anyone elses. My smokeless ashtray and I have done 2 cruises with no problems.

You and your smokeless ashtray have caused "no problems" for you, so you simply ASSume that they've been no problems to anyone else so you can continue to ignore the rules & be an inconsiderate {fill in the blank}.

Glad to see we are finally on the same page. My smokeless ashtray is a considerate item to bring. Yes, their are plenty of rules on board. And a lot of them get twisted, bent and/or broken. But I feel no need to be the ships police. I've seen booze smugglers, dirty diapers in the pool, shorts in the dining room at dinner....I can go on and on. But why should I get bented out of shape if I see rule breakers. I continue on my way and enjoy my vacation without being a whiney yenta. Try it.

There are rules that do not affect my health and well being (e.g., booze smugglers and shorts in the dining room) and rules that do (e.g., smoking where it is not permitted and diapers in the pool). You can bet your butt I'll be reporting violations of those rules post haste.

Everyone has heard about the Star Princess fire ad infinitum. My quibble with the poster I quoted was that "MANY ship fires are caused by cigarette smoking on balconies"..a gross exaggeration IMO. I stated quite clearly that even one shipboard fire is "one too many", but thank you for your input. Any responsible cruiser knows that one has to be extremely diligent when smoking anywhere on a ship at sea.

I agree with you....you can bet that if I see a smoker or a baby in diapers in the pool it will get reported.

I for one was *very* glad to see this policy in the cruise documentation that everyone has to agree to. I pay a pretty penny extra for my balcony and I want to be able to enjoy it without having to deal with someone else's smoke.

Agree and will complain if we smell smoke!!!!:)

I just bring along my smokeless ashtray. Never had any problem or issues with it out on the balcony.

Does your smokeless ashtray suck up all of the smoke that comes out of your mouth? Pretty nervy to announce that you blatantly break the rules.

I would report it also.

Yep, even when there's not smoke coming out of that mouth, there's large amounts of hot air. No way that smokeless ashtray is handling either.

So, how do they make sure that none of that 'offensive' smoke from the cigars doesn't leave the Cigar lounge and invade the rest of the open areas?

The cigar lounge is a closed room, away from most other venues. The closest venue is the forward lounge venue and I've not smelled the cigar smoke in that lounge.
It may not be attended at all times, but I believe the cigar lounge is available all the time.
Thanks for your answer.

Maybe they use smoke eaters in there. Edited by berwyn

I vaguely recall that it had a double door type of arrangement.
You do realize there is a fire hazard to smoking on balconies? Many ship fires have started from smoking on balconies. Your smokeless ashtray doesn't prevent balcony fires.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums
I know that smoking is not a popular thing today but please read the link and you will find out that the engine room is where most fires start.

I was hoping it had some type of double door or vestibule setup before it opens up to the public spaces. I understand from a previous poster that it is not in a central location and sounds like it is a little remote.

Having said that, I realize that many smokers don't worry, maybe not even care, that their cigarette and cigar smoke smell lingers on them and that is offensive to others that they may be around.

I'm sure a lot of them are not even aware of how much they stink. It comes as a big shock to those who become non-smokers.

Totally agree with you! Smokers have no consideration of others as they feed their filthy habit. The casino on IOS was disgusting with the smell of cigarettes. If you walked through the casino, you had to shower, wash your hair, and air out your clothes so you didn't stink like a smoker.

I agree. It is the same for me when people put on too much cologne or perfume. Or the drunk that stinks of alcohol. Both are very offensive to me. But I bet they don't care either.

as long as smoking is around, perhaps it is better for you to stay in a cave or get rid of the drama and not be so intolerable.
