houseflipper48 Posted January 12, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2015 The day we were supposed to leave my adult daughter went to the doctor with a fever and turned out she had the flu, so was she was not able to go with us. I called the cruise line and let them know what was going on. Now that we are back, because she did not have insurance is she out of luck? I would be happy just to get an OBC for next cruise. Thanks! I think she entitled to receive the government taxes and fees back, but beyond that I think she is out of luck. You can always ask, if you are persistent enough they may give you a small OBC. Personally I wouldn't pursue it.
tawaik Posted January 12, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2015 Sorry that your daughter in ill. The Flu is so miserable for one to endure. Hope she gets better soon. When I booked our cruise for April so far out, I opted to purchase insurance. Wish we had a crystal ball to prepare for these types of situations. Good luck with your inquiry to Carnival and have great time.
Rare Tapi Posted January 12, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) Unfortunately she's out of luck. Taxes is all she's getting back. You can always write a letter to Carnival to see if they will issue some credit towards a future cruise, but don't expect it. If Carnival issued credits and refunds to anybody in your predicament, travel insurance companies would go out of business. Sorry this happened. mouche Posted January 12, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2015 So sorry, that why I tell all my travel mates to purchase the insurance, some do and some don't. I think I have only passed on it once in all my cruises and land vacations.
RuthlessBoss Posted January 12, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 12, 2015 According to a previous post by you, you had connecting balconies. That put one person as a solo. Did they use the daughter's fare to cover the solo supplement?
riffatsea Posted January 12, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 12, 2015 I wonder if your daughter paid for the cruise(or you paid) with a credit card?? Some credit cards actually have good trip insurance that you may not realize? I'd check the credit card to see and then claim from that insurance. thomarvin Posted January 12, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 12, 2015 Sorry, I think she is out of luck. This is only the 2nd time I purchased cruise insurance. I was actually surprised at how reasonable it was. It was only $149 for the 4 of us. With a Dad who is 91 you never know what would/could happen. cruiser fanatic Posted January 13, 2015 #11 Share Posted January 13, 2015 Probably out of luck. They only thing Carnival has to reimburse her for is her share of the Taxes.
houseflipper48 Posted January 13, 2015 Author #12 Share Posted January 13, 2015 Carnival won't refund anything including taxes or gov fees because since she was the 2nd person in the cabin, that made my son a solo passenger and he absorbed the cost :( We normally purchase the insurance, but with the holidays time just slipped away from me. Live and learn.
cb at sea Posted January 13, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 13, 2015 The cruise line isn't responsible for her flu...that's what insurance is for! Oops!

ForSharonB Posted January 13, 2015 #16 Share Posted January 13, 2015 So sorry... But wondering if they had had another family member or friend who could have gone on short notice, would Carnival generally allow for a last minute substitute? Has anyone had that happen? BallFour4 Posted January 13, 2015 #18 Share Posted January 13, 2015 I'm convinced some wait in the tall grass to post "you shoulda did this _____ ." Here's what I have done in the past with a situation a little similar to yours. Call them. Offer to book another cruise and see if they will help with some of the pricing and credit transfer. While a case study of one. they did it for my family. It's worth a call. .
45014 Posted January 13, 2015 #19 Share Posted January 13, 2015 We always take the insurance. The cruise we took last year, I needed it. I got sick on the last night of the cruise and spent the night in the "sick bay" then was immediatly taken to the hospital in the morning and spent the entire day there. When the $3000 bill came, we just turned it over to the insurance company after paying the co-pay.
gnocchi_mommy Posted January 13, 2015 #20 Share Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) After I wrote a letter pleading our case Carnival did issue my parents a full cruise credit when there was a death in the immediate family 3 days prior to our cruise. We had to submit a death statement from the funeral director. I was very grateful as my parents have a very limited budget and we actually paid for the cruise. We always buy insurance for ourselves privately through our credit union, it never even occurred to me to insure them. Lesson learned- but I have to say Carnival went above and beyond and earned our loyalty forever. I suspect they felt sympathetic because of the nature of the emergency - but it may also have helped we had 4 other cabins full of family members and were very spendy in the casino. My parents were able to use their credit and cruise with us a year later. With insurance this time. ;-) Edited January 13, 2015 by gnocchi_mommy

I suspect they felt sympathetic because of the nature of the emergency - I think they treat deaths a little differently than they do sickness. They seem to look at each case differently. Some get reimbursed, some don't.
