Music on Princess Ships

I have been amazed by the music played in bars, etc. by the cruise director's DJ people. I look around the Wheelhouse during the BOGO hour and see a bunch of people from 50 - 70 years old and the DJ is playing music that is more appropriate for a group of people maybe in the 30 - 40 year old range. I don't think I've yet had a DJ play music that I like. What's up with that?

 

Am I just a crabby old man (I'm only 62) or do others feel the same way?

My only complaint is the guitar player on the Caribbean Princess last Fall. I wanted to throw him overboard.

When is there a DJ in the Wheelhouse? When we go the band is already playing.

I try not to listen to the DJ's. Live music is usually better.

In all my Princess Cruises I have never seen a DJ in the Wheelhouse, this must be something new that the CD is trying to encourage people to go to afternoon happy hour. If there was a live DJ just ask them to play what you like. Chances are if enough passengers ask he/she will play it.

I try to avoid the DJ. Fortunately, there are plenty of live entertainers around. Some of them are better than others, but I'd rather listen to them than some recording I could hear anywhere. I have heard some really good live music in the piazza lately. The Crooners singer is usually good.

Our last two cruises there was a DJ in Wheelhouse each afternoon for the BOGO. We tried to ignore the noise he was playing. I did ask some other people who were sitting near us about it and they didn't like the selections either.

That was him! Some people seemed to enjoy his music but I was not one of them

If you're talking November or December time frame, and the person was a tall, good-looking young man, that was Toby-Joe Reilly and he is really terrific! To each his own, I guess.

He was a rhythm and blues player, not a pop performer like the Crooners performers (most of whom I adore). Hence, the style of singing and playing.

 

As I said above, to each his own. Many people loved Bert Stratton. I found him very annoying and, for the most part, I avoided his performances.

Bert Stratton is normally in Crooners on the Caribbean Princess. He usually draws a good crowd and has a loyal following. i read recently that a guitar player was in there, but maybe it was early or Bert was put in another lounge if it was a longer cruise. He's leaving the ship next week for a break and will be on another one during the summer.

 

My husband and I don't frequent the other venues so I can't comment on the music in them, except to say, that I'd enjoy listening to a little trio or jazz ensemble sometime. We're usually in the casino and miss a lot of the evening's entertainment.

 

If the entertainment is good in Crooner's on any ship, that's generally where I will sit for the evening. I've made many good acquaintances that way. :)

I wish I had been there. Most of the time my husband and I are wishing we would hear music that is a little more contemporary.

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the DJ music as well as the music played in the halls and on the pool deck. We were expecting Beatles and we got more Beyoncé. We are 38 so your observation is spot on for us. ;)
