Questions new to celebrity

Hello, I have just gotten off my 56th cruise and booked on others and decided to try Celebrity. I have been on many RC ships and find them our favorite but we like to try something different but have a few questions if you don't mind helping us out it be appreciated.

1- Do you have to get dressed all up for dinner, would I be able to wear a nice blouse and black pants, and my other half a nice shirt and dress pants?

2- How is the food in the buffet breakfast and lunch compared to RC, better, more choices? Do they have a daily meat carving?

3- What is there to eat past 11pm besides ordering room service, anything?

4- Does Celebrity offer a live band/music during the evenings, if so, what type is it a regular band and what type of music do they play? We like good old rock n roll.

5- Why do you like to cruise Celebrity?

6- We are both 52 and would we find other people our age, or will it be an older crowed, honestly I don't mind senior crowd, better than kids running around lol.

7- Do they have open seating times for the MDR or is it just regular seating?

8- Do they offer the drink package?

9- Which ship do you prefer the Silhouette or the Reflexion and why?

THANK YOU.

1- Formal nights need a nice suit or Tux and ladies wear a pant suit or cocktail dress. Dressy casual nights guys get away with open shirt and ladies with blouse. You can skip Formal if you want to dine in buffet.

2. Buffet has really good selection including pizza, pasta section, sushi.

3. The buffet is open late, not sure how late. Room service 24 hours.

4. There is live music in the piano lounge, Jazz / classical.

5. Celebrity is refined luxury. Laid back and nice.

6. My husband is 57 and I'm a mature 44...we love Celebrity!

7. If you do Select Seating, you get open seating. This will be our first time.

8. Four drink packages, two non booze, two booze...your choice.

9. I still like the Milliemum ships. Millie, Connie, Infinity, and Summit.

Hope this helps.

1- Very similar to RC, maybe a little bit nicer. Maybe a few more evening gowns and tuxes on formal night and people don't walk around the ship in shorts in the evening.

2 - Very nice selection in buffet, including daily meat carvings if I remember correctly. More selection than RC I think.

3 - Room service for late night food. They used to walk around with midnight bites in the lounges but that stopped a few years ago. I'm not sure what time the pizza/pasta closes in the buffet or the pastries at Il Bacio but it's 11 or 12.

4 - There is a band that plays pop/dance music from different decades in the main lobby and in the sky lounge. You'll also find jazz or light rock in Ensemble Lounge. I've heard a few really good jazz bands there.

5 - It's classy and affordable.

6 - Yes, lots of 52 year olds!

7 - 2 seatings and open seating...you have to prepay gratuity for open seating.

8 - There are several drinks packages, and they often offer the classic alcohol package as a free perk!

9 - Both are nice...no preference. The Sunset Bar on Reflection has more seating than Silhouette and the buffet on Reflection walks right out to the pool. (on Silhouette the buffet is one deck up), Reflection has a smaller less panoramic Sky Lounge and has the Lawn Club Grill,..otherwise some subtle differences, but apples to apples for the most part, and these are not reasons I would choose one over the other. Choose based on itinerary.

I cruised many RC cruises, loved them, but changed over to Celebrity once we hit Diamond (Elite on Celebrity) and now prefer Celebrity, although I'm dying to try one of the new Quantum ships on RC.

I've been on several of the "M" class ships and am leaving on another one next week, but I think you will be WOW'd by the "S" class, both Silhouette and Reflection are "S" class.

If you don't feel like dressing on formal night both those ships have many specialty restaurants to choose from and of course there is the buffet. Don't dismiss the buffet for dinner, on our Equinox cruise last year we ate there for dinner several times, food was great and they will even grill your choice of meats if you'd like.

Give Celebrity a try, you might get hooked like I did!

The main difference for us is the atmospherE which is more upscale yet relaxed. For instance, on Celebrity they only have announcements once in the morning so you are not constantly hearing them. We think the food is much better, especially if you cruise in Aqua Class since you have access to the Blu restaurant. You would also have access to the Persian Garden which on the S class ship is vey relaxing. We love Cafe Al Bacio for their specialty coffees, much better than the RC Lattitudes and the treats are free. The sushi at 5:30 pm in the buffet is outstanding, there is always a lineup for it. The Martini Bar has a great vibe and is also very popular.

Of course we also like Royal (hi Royalcruz we were with you on the VOS last April. My CC ID was jhc52 back then.) but overall we prefer Celebrity.

Just going to comment on #1 as the above post is not really correct. Smart Casual is the dress code for evening other than formal. Men on smart casual night wear a shirt and pants. All the specialty restaurants are smart casual every night including formal nights. Many eat in specialty restaurants for that reason, so they don't have to bring formal clothes.

The code only applies to the restaurants, you will definitely see people walking around in shorts in the evening. Many go back to their rooms to change after dinner and those who eat in the buffet often wear shorts.

Enforcement of dress code will definitely be dependent on the itinerary.

Hi Jean! We had fun on VOS.

djkretired, sorry, I was in error when I said that people don't walk around in shorts in the evening. I meant to say that "most" people don't walk around in shorts in the evening. This is much more common evening attire on RC than on Celebrity. Shorts are allowed in most venues in the evening, but not in restaurants other than buffet, and not in the Elite cocktail hour lounge.

Regarding the food, I liked that the buffet was open always from breakfast until about 1 am (just pizza and pasta sometimes, but always something available). We are not all-day eaters but we sometimes missed the lunch window on Royal or wanted a late snack and there weren't as many options.

During the day you can wear shorts to all the restaurants. I know that sometimes confuses newcomers to Celebrity, thinking they must wear smart casual to eat all day long. You'll find me in flip flops and capris and a tee most days on board;).

We have only ever sailed Celebrity and not even close to the number of cruises you have. You'll love Celebrity. You're probably in the "sweet spot" as far as age. There will be tons of people your age. We love the S class ships. Have never been on the two you mentioned but they're all really similar. We have been on Eclipse and Equinox 3 times each. Have a great cruise.

The only place to eat that any of us would wear shorts is at the breakfast and lunch buffet, never the restaurants.

I am booked on the Silhouette but able to make changes, I will check into the other ships and see where they leave from and go.

We stay up late to around 2am or so, just like to do something we normally don't do at home, but we love listening to live music, wonder if there is live music to the wee hours even till midnight be good?

As far as late night snacks, because we eat dinner around 7pm and stay up late, we like to eat something late, I don't eat pasta can't eat gluten, curious whether they offer cheese, salads or fruit, fries or something else in the evening?

I know I will love to cruise Celebrity, I am a huge foodie when I go away, does the casino close in the evenings? I went on Princess and they closed the casino two out of seven nights around 1am due to not having quota, would this happen on Celebrity (just curious its ok if it does)?

You all been so helpful thank you.

I don't believe you can wear shorts or flip flops in the theatre in the evenings.

There weren't salads available late on the eclipse or Equinox when we were on them. I remember sweets. Cookies. Squares. That sort of thing.

Lots of great comments, so I wont boar you with too many more.

We first sailed RCCL in 1990, and X in 1994, X is our favorite overall.

Sailed the Reflection in 2013, it is our favorite ship yet.

You will find the basics are more alike. As i have said before,

RCCL is like Circus Circus and Celebrity is like the Wynn.

The wifester is 57, and I am 61.

ps: the wifester has Celiac, the GF pizza on Reflection and last yr on Equinox brought tears to her eyes.

Been on 6 Celebrity cruises. We dress for formal night - DH in suit and me in black pants and dressy top. We change after dinner to casual dress. We eat in select around 8 so attend late show if scheduled and sometimes in shorts depending if in Caribbean. IMHO I have noticed a decline in the number of women in ball type gowns and men in tuxes.

Hi....I will take a few of your questions.....you will not find music

into "the wee hours"...sorry. They do have different musicians on

board but playing until 2am? I have cruised with Celebrity for quite

a few years now and I can only think a handful of times where it

was what I consider "late".....sometimes in the disco but that is not

always a definite on every cruise. Results vary cruise to cruise.

Sometimes midnight/1:00 but not normally 2am.....you will have

to see what your particular cruise is offering.

Does the casino close? Yes, it closes....the dealers need to sleep

too;)....if it is busy they will stay up but not always. Individual

results vary cruise to cruise.

As for late night snacks? Pizza is served late but since that is not in

your wheelhouse? I would suggest Room Service and see what the

offerings are.....I know there are Fries on the menu.

Fruit/cheese are not offered in the buffet in the late evenings

(not that I have seen anyway).

I just love you all on this Celebrity board you all been kind.

I love the Wynn in Vegas our most preferred hotels there. So Celebrity sounds like what we really want and need.

If the live bands play till midnight all is perfect, I can live with that.

I should of mentioned we don't play game tables in the casino's would the casino slots be open to to play until lets say around 2am?

I have to be gluten free for medical reasons and dairy free, so pizza is out and I do like to have a snack late at night usually around 11-midnight somewhere. We never order room service, just don't want to sit and wait for a snack late at night in our room....do the rooms have refrigerators? I am quite surprised that Celebrity doesn't offer even cheese, fruit or salads late at night somewhere or have a 24 hour promenade that you can get a few goodies such as RC has on their newer ships, quite surprised. If there is a refrigerator I gather I can get something in one of the buffets to snack on late at night.

Yes, all the rooms have small fridges...there is a venue called

Cafe Al Bacio but they only serve sweets.....pastries, cookies, cakes,

and they usually stay open till 12/1.......they also have specialty

coffees, teas, etc......no charge for the sweets......

Celebrity has never offered a 24 hour Promenade.

THANK YOU.

1. For all but the formal nights, the outfits you suggested will be fine. Men should wear jackets and ties (or tuxes) on formal nights. I don't mind dressing up so never felt the need to test the limits.

2. Never sailed on RC so can't compare. That being said, I've been impressed with the buffets. At lunch there's a carvery serving every day (beef, ham, roast pork, turkey etc. depending on the day.)

3. I believe the buffet is opened until 11. Room service is available 24 hours, but never tried to order it in the wee hours.

4. Besides the jazz clubs etc., the Skyview Lounge has dancing every night to a live band (except on Valentine's Day on the Silhouette when the band played slow songs in the main lobby - very romantic). Like you, DW and I like old time rock and roll (Beatles, 50s etc.) We've never been disappointed. There was also 70s disco.

5. Classy but not stuffy, excellent service, good food, good value, beautiful ships, superb entertainment, minimal amount of announcements on P.A. system, relatively quiet in the pool area.

6. I'm 57, DW is 60 but we are young at heart. (That's why we know so much about the dancing.) Judging by how many people were on the dance floor (on all three of our Celeb cruises) we are typical. At 52, you may be a little younger than many, but hardly out of place. (I was 54 on our first Celeb cruise.)

7. Yes to both.

8. Yes - but do the math. If you're a light drinker you may find it cheaper to pay for each drink separately.

9. Haven't sailed on the Reflection, but the Silhouette is incredible. I'd go on it again in a heartbeat.

Dress is casual sport unless it is formal night. You can go casual in specialty restaurants and buffet, not MDR.

2-Buffrt breakfast I find better than RCCL, but that is subjective but I don't think you will be disappointed.

3-Have no idea, past out by then

4- Check your dailies for dance and where on ship. You do get a lot of 60's rock and roll but you also get jazz, classical, waltzes, etc.

5- cabins are larger, crew more friendly, never a food problem, clean, library, I-lounge, live music, smaller crowd and of coarse itinerary.

6-20's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's and 90's average I would say most people are in their 50's

7-Open seating called select dining, yes!

8- drink packages are offered, check on their web site for the different type

9-Was never on the larger or (S) class always on M class or smaller

Hope this helps, enjoy your cruise.
