No Cheese Sticks for you!

On our recent Breakaway Cruise we were in O'Sheehans at one of the tables right by the balcony overlooking the atrium. We ordered burgers and beers and I also asked for an order of cheese sticks. The waiter brought us everything except the cheese sticks. I waited awhile and then asked him again about the cheese sticks. He replied with "let me check" Upon his return he said very apologetically that we wouldn't be able to have them due to where we were sitting! What?!?!?! He said if we were sitting in the main restaurant area we could have them but not at those particular seats. I felt very bad for him as he was nervously apologizing and certainly was kind to him in my response.

This is not meant to be any kind of bash NCL as we really had a great time...but must admit that I found that particular situation to be very bizarre. :)

With all of the shoot from the hip policies that NCL has been trying to do recently...the staff must be going insane trying to keep up! :D

Downright stupid. Did a manager fix it for you?

I didn't really push the situation as it wasn't all that important to me...and I got the feeling from the waiter that it was a manager who told him no. Life went on :)

I had the same thing happen on the Epic a year ago, but it wasn't for cheese sticks. I can't remember what the item was, but like you I ordered a burger and fries (my wife was not feeling well that evening). The other item I ordered they couldn't serve outside the restaurant. I asked if I sat inside the restaurant if I could get it and they said yes (most of the people were around the atrium opening watching a game and there were empty tables). So I sat in the restaurant and got the item. It would have been really inconvenient if there weren't tables available in the restaurant; I sat outside only because I was alone and didn't want to take up the space.

OK, Red, I get that no one wants to waste time on vacation talking to Managers about the reasons for stupid rules, and you felt it wasn't important. Yet you felt it was important enough to post a thread about on Cruise Critic?.

I have never ordered food on the "bar" side of O'Sheehans, only the restaurant. Are there seperate menus perhaps for each area and they are refusing to deliver something not on the menu in that area? Only thing I can think of which would make sense, although I would think the bar side would tend to have more snack type bar food ( like cheese sticks and wings ) than the full meal you would expect on the restaurant side. Were the cheese sticks on the menu where you ordered?

It sounds like to me you were on board while they were under the no takeout rules. Were you sitting technically outside the restaurant?

Sadly it won't be of help to you now but the rules were changed back so hopefully that includes the no takeout rule and people will be allowed.

Why they would serve the burger and fries out there but not the cheese sticks is a mystery to me though.

Nah, doesn't sound like that, but it doesn't look like you've been on the ship, so hard to understand the setup. There are basically 2 sections to O'Sheehan's: the restaurant part, and a pub part, that includes a bunch of seating around the area that is open to the atrium. It is definitely part of O'Sheehan's, but definitely outside the restaurant part. I know the pub and restaurant have different menus, with a bit of overlap. I thought both had cheese sticks on the menus though. Apparently not.

Because I thought people discussing cruise situations on a cruise forum might find it interesting. It isn't earth shattering news and wasn't intended to be.

I honestly don't remember if they were on the menu that particular time or not...but we had seen them on the menus on previous occasions.

Don't think any "take out" rules applied, since they gave him the hamburger and fries.

Got to wonder why, because it seems like a pretty strange rule. Maybe someone who is going shortly on a cruise or someone who is on one can find out what the reasoning is. First I thought maybe it was because they were overlooking the atrium and the cheese sticks could be a projectile, but then fries could be one as well, so I scraped that thought LOL.

Funny that you mentioned that as the same thought crossed my mind! (About the projectiles) But the fries were harder than the cheese sticks would have been! :D

Wow that is really weird. What makes ordering the cheeseburger and fries any different than ordering the cheesesticks? It would still come out to the same place. Really confusing and weird.

Exactly! This may remain one of lifes great mysteries LOL

But if you think about it, the cheese sticks might be a little gooey, if it were to hit someone. LOL!

True Dat! But as our mothers used to say be careful with those fries as they might "poke your eye out" :D

Nope, you are right. I will be going Saturday. If I remember I will probably ask someone there. It is a strange rule. It could be worked around if you wanted to go to the trouble, but you shouldn't have to.

I seem to recall, on the breakaway, that the bar menu was a lot more limited than the restaurant menu, and if you wanted items on the restaurant menu, you would have to sit in the restaurant. It was hard to even get a server to take our order in the bar, it seemed short staffed.

I wish every cruiser in CC was as awesome and chill as you. Thanks for not losing sight of the greater picture and not letting something that silly/ odd situation mar your vacay.

This happened to me a few times (breakaway) bar vs restaurant side. I saw where they were going w it. Same as any pub bar menu vs table menu. So no biggie, but on 2 day cruise I was able to get the sticks and "sneak" them away to casino (waiting for machines to open and we were starving LOL)

Last week on Gem, I sat at bar (facing out to atrium, listening to Leo:) ) and I was able to order the sticks.

In the final analysis? sticks no sticks..........had a great time. I don't see this has major NCL issue ;)

The cruise on BA last November on the first night they had prime rib so we went there for dinner. We had a party of 8 and was told they had no seating for 8 they didn't say it would be an hour wait or whatever, they simply said no tables for 8 we told the hostess it would be fine to split us to two tables of 4. She looked at me like I had two heads lol. She just did Notngetbit for some reason. they told us we could sit on the bar side and order the prime rib over there. Once we were seated we ordered the prime rib and the waiter said sorry you can't have that on this side. I said over my dead body we can't have it over here get me a manager. I talked to the manager and before you knew it we had 8 orders of prime rib on the "other" side of OSH

My cruise will be ruined, ruined I say if I can't eat what I want, where I want it. I'm outraged, I mean NCL is get getting ridiculous. I'm sure it is an edit from Del Rio. We should start a social media campaign right now. Somebody call USAToday.

Very strange.

On Getaway, I ordered appetizers like wings overlooking the atrium all the time for the shows. Its overflowing seating for O'Sheehans. That makes no sense to me especially since burgers were ordered and eaten there by the OP.

Is this exclusive to Breakaway? Would love to know the logic behind this one

With all these changes at NCL restaurants lately......don't be surprised to be asked to the hokey pokey and turn yourself around next time you want to eat at a restaurant.

What next
