evelynw2 Posted June 5, 2015 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Hi we are cruising from Barcelona to Rome aboard the Emerald with two 20 year olds. Does anyone know what the minimum age for entry into the casino or bar is? I thought it was 18 for European cruises, but the agent said it was 21. Thanks
rdsqrl Posted June 5, 2015 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2015 They can go into the bar; they just can't order alcohol. Even in Europe, Princess hews to the American obsession with preventing legal adults over 18 from enjoying any of the privileges they're allowed to fight to protect or vote to repeal. newport dave Posted June 5, 2015 #3 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Only cruises around the USA, Canada & Caribbean are 21. All other cruises are 18.
rdsqrl Posted June 5, 2015 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Only cruises around the USA, Canada & Caribbean are 21. All other cruises are 18. I do not think that's accurate with respect to Europe. Are you sure?
newport dave Posted June 5, 2015 #5 Share Posted June 5, 2015 I do not think that's accurate with respect to Europe. Are you sure? We've done Med, Canaries & Norwegian Fjords/Iceland and the drinking age was 18. They had a little '18' sticker over the 21 on the signs all around the bars. However, I think you were on the one ship that was based in Southampton, which goes by British rules. That's the one that does the Canaries and the Med Medley itinerary. Princess has one every season, and on that ship, the age is 18. On the others in Europe, however, it remains 21. I'm pretty sure of this.
Colo Cruiser Posted June 5, 2015 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Only cruises around the USA, Canada & Caribbean are 21. All other cruises are 18. This is not true. Our Regal cruise from Venice to Barcelona was 21.
BCEagle78 Posted June 5, 2015 #8 Share Posted June 5, 2015 We just got off the Emerald in Europe a few weeks ago. The age to purchase alcohol on the ship was 18.
Colo Cruiser Posted June 5, 2015 #9 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Cruises from Southampton are usually 18.
BCEagle78 Posted June 5, 2015 #10 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Our cruise was the trans Atlantic which originated in Ft. Lauderdale and ended in Barcelona. It was 18 all the way.

NavyVeteran Posted June 5, 2015 #12 Share Posted June 5, 2015 The Princess Passage Contract is available at http://www.princess.com/legal/passage_contract/index.jsp. Note that there are two different passage contracts provided: Most voyages except select itineraries departing from Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, and Korea. Select voyages departing from Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, and Korea. Most chartered Voyages except select itineraries departing from Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, Korea, and Tawwan. Paragraph 5 of the Passage Contracts cover ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS; DRINKING; TOBACCO; GAMING; ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES. The Passage Contract for Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, and Korea states "For all vessels sailing from Japanese ports, the minimum age for gambling and drinking alcohol is 20 years or older. For all cruises originating from Australian or Asian ports other than Japan, as well as sailing round trip from Southampton, the minimum drinking and gambling age is 18 years or older." Don't ask me why this Passage Contract applies to "sailing round trip from Southampton" - it doesn't have to make sense; it's in the contract. The other two Passage Contracts state "No Passenger under the age of 21 may purchase, possess or consume alcohol during the Cruise. No Passenger under the age of 21 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board the ship." and "No Passenger under the age of 21 may purchase, possess or consume alcohol during the Cruise. No Passenger under the age of 21 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board the Vessel." Apparently it's a "ship" for most voyages and a "Vessel" for chartered voyages - but it's the same drinking and gambling age. The most confusing thing to me is that the Passage Contract for Australia, Japan, Singapore, China, and Korea covers "sailing round trip from Southampton" with a drinking age of 18 but the Passage Contract for most voyages covers the rest of Europe with a drinking age of 21. However, Princess is not consistent in their documentation. I just checked the Cruise Personalizer on a cruise on the Caribbean Princess I have booked round trip from Southampton in August 2016. The Cruise Personalizer for this cruise under Boarding Pass & Docs provided a link to the Passage Contract with the statement "No Passenger under the age of 21 may purchase, possess or consume alcohol during the Cruise. No Passenger under the age of 21 shall be permitted to engage in any gaming activities on board the ship." So the drinking age of 18 appears to apply to some cruises roundtrip from Southampton but not all.

gailjen Posted June 5, 2015 #14 Share Posted June 5, 2015 (edited) Our cruise was the trans Atlantic which originated in Ft. Lauderdale and ended in Barcelona. It was 18 all the way. I'm in discussions with Princess at present as been posted by a few in the last week or so that the Emerald has relaxed the age to 18 and is in the Patter, also my personliser allows me to add the drinks package on for him and clearly states 18 and over.. If anyone has the patter showing the age I would be grateful 😀 Edited June 5, 2015 by gailjen
paul929207 Posted June 5, 2015 #15 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Only cruises around the USA, Canada & Caribbean are 21. All other cruises are 18. That is incorrect. The drinking age on Princess ships in the Med is 21.
antsp Posted June 5, 2015 #16 Share Posted June 5, 2015 That is incorrect. The drinking age on Princess ships in the Med is 21. It's 18 at the moment on the Emerald, it's posted at all the bars.

evelynw2 Posted June 5, 2015 Author #19 Share Posted June 5, 2015 Wow this is confusing .Is anyone currently on the Emerald or has a picture that shows the age of 18 at the bar or casino? It seems that you even get a different answer depending on the agent you draw when you call! . Thanks
paul929207 Posted June 5, 2015 #20 Share Posted June 5, 2015 It's 18 at the moment on the Emerald, it's posted at all the bars. Isn't the Emerad doing British Isles cruise?

As I'm in talks with Princess regarding this issue a picture of the age from the patter or poster advertising this off the ship would be gratefully received 😃 Thanks in advance x
