Looking for suggestions on a GREAT tour guide for the Amalfi Coast - if you have the name of someone please let me know and also why he was so good. Many thanks.

In early May, we used APTours and our driver was Aronne and he was wonderful. A skilled driver and a really knowledgeable and charming guy. He is from Sorrento and knows so much about the area. Plus, he is very, very funny - we had a great time talking and laughing with him. I thought the APTours pricing was better than some of the other companies that also are highly rated.

Last year we toured the Amalfi, Ravello and Positano with Limo Service Naples. Excellent service from the moment I emailed them about their tours -Alex is great, he responds immediately to your inquiries - the tour itself was fantastic with our driver Mario, and we had a fabulous lunch at a local trattoria. Highly recommend them.

We used Domenico from Private tour in Italy. The Amalfi was probably the highlite of our cruise. From the moment that we met him we knew we were going to have a great day. He is from Sorrento and knows the area very well. We toured Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. We had a fantastic lunch at "La Tagliata" high above Positano overlooking the coast.

My daughter and son-in-law also used him last year and very totally impressed. I have since sent him numerous friends and all have had a great time.

You won't be dissapointed!

Another thumbs up for APTours….. we have used them 4 times and have had great times on all 4 !

Remember that drivers and guides are 2 different things in Italy. Be sure you are very clear on exactly what you are looking for …….

Alberto - our driver - could not guide us in Pompeii or in any of the villages but he is so charming and talked with us about history, culture etc while driving from one place to another…… we always opt to hire a private guide for Pompeii (we love Pina !) as the place is huge and so many things you won't have a clue as to what you are looking at……..

As for La Tagliata - be prepared to use a lot of your precious port time having lunch !!!! We prefer to find a small place (usually Amalfi) and have a quick bite so we have more time to explore :D

http://www.aldolimos.com is exceptional, been with them very recently for the forth time in as many years. We always ask for Aldo and the Merc Sprinter van - this van is the best for 8 people in comfort. ALDO resides in Sorrento, was a Michelin star chef and knows the region like the back of his hand. Their rates are 440 EUR for the day, better than most and highly reliable. Check them out via Tripadviser.

They also arrange Shared Tours if you can't arrange a small group yourself.

Last Monday, we toured with seeamalficoast.com and had a great day. The driver, Carmine, was extremely informative, amusing, and flexible. He spoke excellent English. He was a great driver! I had worried about the drive, but I was very comfortable with Carmine at the wheel.

He took us to a fantastic lunch place. 25€ pp for appetizers, salad, four kinds of homemade pasta, a bottle of red and a bottle of white, homemade sweets, and shots of limoncello and apple liqueuer. The fresh bufalo mozzarella was beyond anything I've ever tasted, amd the view was terrific. Much of the food was grown on site in their extensive garden. Best meal ever!

I'm chiming in with SeeAmalfiCoast as well. Just finished our 3rd trip with them this past Sunday and they are simply wonderful. Carmine's father was a tour driver before private cars/vans became so popular. Carmine and his cousin Vito do the most personal and wonderful tours. Our favorite tours across all over 3 years. They live there, know everything and everybody! What a blast!!!

Recently we booked a private tour through our TA with Rosato Private Tours. The plan was to visit Pompeii then Vesuvius. Our driver, Vittorio was waiting for us dockside and we immediately were escorted to his vehicle. Vittorio's professional and pleasant demeanor immediately put us at ease.

During our drive to Pompeii, Vittorio provided excellent local information. Rosato Private Tours had arranged a private guide for us at Pompeii. This was an extra fee that was well worth it.

Our guide at the site, Lina, was amazing. She had a true passion for the history of Pompeii and it showed. While we scratched the surface of this amazing historical site, we gained an incredible amount of knowledge from Lina. It was one of the highlights of our trip. The hours there flew by.

Our next stop was to be the climb to Mt. Vesuvius. Our driver, Vittorio, suggested we make alternative plans for several reasons. It was extremely humid and hazy that day and we were traveling with my mother who is a senior citizen. He felt that it would be too much for the group with too little reward. He suggested we go to Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast.

That turned out to be an excellent idea. After some shopping in Sorrento, we went to a beautiful restaurant along the coast. This stop was pre-arranged by Vittorio and was perfect. The subsequent drive along the coast was amazing with frequent stops for sightseeing.

In the end, we arrived out ship with plenty of time to spare and extremely satisfied.

If you are considering a private tour in Naples, I would suggest Rosato Private Tours. We were more that satisfied with their service.

We did Rome in Limo five years ago and it was great. I forget the forget the driver's name but we shared the tour with 2 other couples. We did part of the Amalfi, stopping at Pompei (they got us in before it opened) , Positano and Sorrento. We had lots of photo stops and I think we paid less then 100 dollars per person.

Boy, your guide was right. My wife and I did Vesuvius (Aug. of 2012). It was great, but we were absolutely wiped out by the end (I was 48, wife 50). It is a steep climb, exposed to the sun and NOT wheelchair/disability friendly. And if it had been hazy, our enjoyment would have been severly diminished.

I used Shared Tours in Italy by AP Tours to do their "Pompeii, Positano and Sorrento tour"

I started a group, expecting to have a total of 8 (we are 3) and ended up with a total of 17. All from our Roll Call.

They were great and accommodate us on a minibus.

We had an amazing day with our guide Pina. In Sorrento she took us to a very good restaurant (food and price wise).

They had the most competitive price from the ones I've been searching. I will definitely use them again.

In Livorno we used Italy Tour sharing by Joe Banana Limos to go to Cinque Terre and Pisa and was very disappointing... We were very unlucky with our driver... Bad choice:(

We used Rome in Limo a few years ago to see the Almafi Coast and Pompeii. The driver was excellent and an entertaining tour guide along the way. The road back to the ship was unexpectedly closed due to construction. The driver pulled out a jug of wine and gave us a few glasses of wine plus snacks when we were sitting in construction traffic while he worked to find out how long the road was going to be closed. Turned out it was going to be closed for hours so he took us back to the ship via a gorgeous route through the mountains complete with a stop at one of the small towns we passed through. Even with the spur of the moment change in plans, we got back to the ship over an hour before we sailed. Our driver handled everything with ease.

  • 1 year later...

Question on seeamalficoast tour - their Amalfi tour is for 8 hours on the website and on the booking confirmation there is a note that said there is extra €40 for each extra hour beyond 8.

My question is - how strict are they about this 8-hour rule?

I was disappointed since I felt that this information should have been up front and part of their website. If you book the tour it would be 8 hours give or take? Why be so uptight?

Romeinlimo advertises their Amalfi tour for 9 hours.
