CruisinMaterial Posted June 10, 2015 #51 Share Posted June 10, 2015 I don't think that is the reason at all. I think the reason is that they have finally figured out how much revenue they are losing from the passengers smuggling booze on the ships and are trying to find a way to stop it, so that they will garner that revenue. I think it's becoming a liability issue for the cruise line as more and more idiots are sailing, doing stupid things and suing the cruise lines for them. If that impacts the bottom line and they're not doing something about it then they could be proved negligent. We have differing opinions on the matter but as courts are finding more and more in plaintiffs favors in the USA for ships of foreign flags... something's got to give. :(

Linda the Book Lover Posted June 10, 2015 #53 Share Posted June 10, 2015 I like Poland Springs water. :p I wonder what the name brand of the water will be. Since Carnival is contracted with Coca-Cola I wonder if it will be Dasani? Mum is the word on the name brand they're using. If it's Geyser it'll be crap! I am hoping for Dasani since we are going next month on Carnival.
lettienets Posted June 10, 2015 #54 Share Posted June 10, 2015 For people who don't like Carnival party cruises try taking their 9, 10, 12 day ones, repositioning ones or Europe cruises every time a new ship comes out, (they do Europe all summer and then a transatlantic). New ship 2016, Carnival Vista, new 2018 unnamed. Totally different crowd and vibe on any of these. Older clientele. Few kids, usually toddlers, homeschooled or a few pulled out of school for a trip. You would not know you are on Carnival. Avoid school holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving and 4 day types.

swedish weave Posted June 10, 2015 #57 Share Posted June 10, 2015 All cruise lines can stop serving a passenger, if it at the bartenders discretion, the person is visibly intoxicated and unable to function. I've seen it happen once on NCL and it was a spring break cruise, where a person was so intoxicated they had to be removed from the venue after they were shut off by the bartender and assistant bar manager there. They made a good call but the person was intoxicated and didn't take kindly to being shut off and so security was called (and they were at the door so it wasn't far for them to travel). Maybe the clientele between the two cruise lines is different as to why there's more bad behavior on Carnival than NCL? However, keep in mind while you're saying UBP is included - it really isn't since the base fares have been inflated since these sales started. You're still paying for the amount they figure you're actually consuming. Even last minute fares for itineraries which usually reduced are still marked up by that price point. I don't believe people are classified by the cruise line they choose. A person who wants to get drunk will do so regardless of the cruise line they have chosen. An isolated incident of a drunk being cut off doesn't mean much when the ship handles thousands of guests. The UBP being part of the booking is going to produce drunks whether they pay for it outright or as part of the fare. I don't agree with your attempt to belittle Carnival in favor of NCL. Either line can have these problems and the UBP can be a large factor..

Either line can have these problems and the UBP can be a large factor.. Yes, any drunk person is going to be inebriated on any line they choose but I think NCL has better gripe on that problem due to differences of some of their ships / culture than Carnival. Personally, that room service fee on NCL is a sobering thought for many drunkards plus the belief of being nickel & dime even when using the UBP (remember it only covers certain $11 drinks and under) is going to keep some away. Combine that with small rooms and balconies on some of the ships along with most restaurants & some shows have a fee plus Pepsi products and no bathrobes in some rooms - I can see where a drunk person might not want to sail on NCL. In other words - NCL solved it own drunkard problem due to its 'bad' reputation preceding them. Just as Carnival has own 'bad' reputation due to its own old advertisement of being the 'party ship' which it trying to fix now by banning bottles brought on board and raising fares without doing last-minute discounts. The price we pay barely covers the food, salaries, ship maintainance, entertainment, etc. The money is made on the bar, excursions and the casino. Obviously cheating the company out of revenue on the bar is cheating them out of big bucks. I don't blame them for what they are doing.

Laszlo Posted June 11, 2015 #63 Share Posted June 11, 2015 What do you think bottled water is? It is basically tap water. That is what Coke does with Dasani and Pepsi with Aquafina. They buy municipal water and filter it a few more times before bottling it. For a cruise ship, the pricing is decent, for a land store it would be a complete rip off. As others have said, the question is how long do prices stay this low? Still boggles my mind at the amount of people who get suckered into buying bottled water. I bet 99.9% of them have no idea where it comes from. The quality of the water on the ship is excellent. I hope everyone who hauls water on board doesn't use the ships ice:D

CruisinMaterial Posted June 11, 2015 #65 Share Posted June 11, 2015 Amazing but on the CNN screen crawl, this topic made the news.Didn't think it would be worthy of an international headline.:eek: Carnival doesn't just sail exclusively in North America any more. They've got further reaching deployments, including down under in Australia, so it is a global news story. They also have the largest fleet of ships of any cruise line so it is sort of big news. Question is, does the big news go across the board to all the other lines? Then it may be worthy of a news story! Miami based stations actually gave it news story coverage with VOSOTs and other related type of air time press. People love their bottles I guess! :D

I do see comments on the CCL forum that apparently not all ships have good water. It appears to more involve the older ships, so perhaps it is a lack of maintenance? Or perhaps just prima donnas? We do use bottled water when going into port. I understand the water is safe for Americans in more and more countries, but I'm not really going to investigate the time to find out. We recently were in St. Kitts and a couple next to use was drinking the local water. I hope they didn't later pay the price.
