A hotel close to Cape Liberty/Bayonne

Can anyone recommend a hotel close to the port that has transportation to the port and is close to other amenities?

The closest hotels to the port are 8-11 miles away at Newark Airport or in Jersey City.

Please provide these details so we can give you good advice. Driving or flying? Exact sail date? Budget? Number of people? If driving, where are you coming from?

Offering a port shuttle is not the norm in this area. It doesn't work like Florida. We only recommend a few hotels that have shuttles and you pay about $70 for the shuttle for two people in the price of the hotel package. Car services charge $55-60 each way to go to tge port.

Hotels at the airport have limited dining options. I'm not sure what you mean by amenities, but if you fly in and don't have a car, there are no options to buy wine or sundries at the airport.

What date is your cruise?

The high level plan would be to drive to the Parsipanny, NJ area, book a hotel in that area (Hotwire often has good deals), and drive and park at the port the following day. The Parsipanny area would offer a variety iof services that you would not have at Newark Airport. You would also minimize your driving in tge traffic and congestion of the airport area.

We prefer the Country Inn, but we also tried the Double Tree. Usually schedule a private car to take us to the port. Cabs work as well.

You might look at the roll call for your cruise and see if you can partner up with somebody else on transportation. The departure boards could also help.

Lastly Google will have tons of this already archived. Try adding site:cruisecritic.com to your searches and you will just search here.

We're leaving next May, I like to plan everything, we have like 338 days left. We would either go through NFALLS, or Fort Erie and go through Buffalo, if we fly it's around just over 500 US, plus 100 for bags, and maybe a hotel before the flight. If we drive, our Ford Escape gets around 600 KM to a tank, and it costs around say around 45.00 to fill up, plus a hotel cost. Just nervous about driving, cause we always fly and not knowing our way even with a GPS and if we're going through a good neighbourhood or not and how bad traffic would get.

Could you provide the exact date? Advice varies with the day of the week and the length of the cruise. That's why I ask so many questions.

NOT staying on Staten Island or at Newark Airport is one way to NOT worry so much about bad neighborhoods or traffic congestion.

We will be driving with our friends who are from Toronto. We will drive and stay over about an hour away from the port, get up in the morning and drive to Bayonne and park in the port lot. Much cheaper than flying and we feel that it's much less hectic too. It's an easy drive from where you're coming from.

We drove from Kingston, ON last May. Stayed in Secaucus NJ then drove to the port in the morning and parked there for the week.

Your distances are about the same as ours. I would drive about 75-80% of the way and get a hotel outside of the pricey area, then drive the rest in the morning.

The only advantage you have over us in Kingston, is that you could probably get a direct flight. We'd have to drive to Toronto or Syracuse if we don't want to change planes. So it's about 6 hours for us regardless (Kingston with changes, drive to a bigger airport, or drive the whole way).

We're leaving on May 14th on Anthem and coming back in the 21st

Great! That's a 7 day Sat to Sat cruise. Can you drive down the day before? The recommendation would be to book a room in the Parsipanny NJ area (Hotwire is good for this on a weekend) for Fri night. This keeps you out of any metro NY weekend traffic and leaves you in a nice suburban area. Drive to the port Sat morning ( no need to deal with Newark Airport) and pay the $133 to park for the week. After the cruise you hop in your car and head home.

If you fly it will cost you a minimum of $55-60 each way to get from and to the airport, so factor that in. Even if you book a hotel with a shuttle, you will pay about $70 for the shuttle piece of the hotel package cost.

We did it once from Chicago. It's easy, assuming you don't mind sitting for 13 hours or so. ;-)

FWIW, airfare was crazy...more than a grand per. We rented a car, for something like 150 bucks, and spent another couple hundred on gas. It's not my preference, but, it was a considerable savings.

You're too far out to book a hotel right now but take a look at Trinity Reservations. They have hotels near the airport that provides parking and shuttle to cruise port, some included and some extra charge for Cape Liberty. We always use them when wanting to drive to a port the day before. We're using them next in December when we drive to Baltimore. Unfortunately, the offered hotels are near airports and not many things nearby. You can drive into Manhattan the night before if you want to though.

I'm a big fan of Trinityreservations.com. A park/sleep can work pricewise with or without a car. I'd still like to hear what the OP considers "amenities". Folks who fly in have no easy access to a liquor store or drug store. Folks who drive in should consider shopping at South Cove Commons in Bayonne on Lefante Way instead of wandering around the airport area in search of stores.

How easy is it to drive to NJ?

The drive from Kingston to NJ was easy. Interstates all the way, easy to pull off and gas up or get food. We've done that drive a few times and it has always been pretty easy.

Getting to the port was tricky because of construction. Combination of GPS and printed map, we made it, but I would advise doing research ahead of time to make sure you have an idea of where you're going.

We've stayed in the Secaucus area a few times when we've visited NYC. Relatively inexpensive hotels and there is a great (cheap) bus into the city, to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. When we went on our cruise last year, we stayed in Secaucus and went into the city to see a show the night before our cruise. But staying further out is a good option too.

There are no good areas in that area. We were once told that they are starting a shuttle from TF Green airport in Providence ( where we are) that goes to Cape Liberty. We need to find out if that's the case.

If you rent a car, can you take it across the border?

FWIW, we rented two cars...one each way. Picked up and dropped off at the airport. Assuming you are talking about a state border, it was not an issue for us. No idea about national borders. You should (as Bob mentioned) ask your agent.

I would highly advise doing without a car. Parking at the pier is expensive. Stay in Jersey City or at Newark and take a cab. Jersey city by the river has wonderful views of Manhattan. You would have access to NYC by the Path. It is chaos at the pier. Arrive early to avoid the crowds.
