We did the British Isles cruise last week on Royal Princess.

The best side of ship depends on which way round the cruise is going.

Our cruise went clockwise so the best views of the land on sea days was from the starboard side which we were on, port side mostly sea.

Regarding when in port it varied sometimes things worth looking at other times not.

It doesn't matter. Most of the ports are industrial container ports - not much to see.

Guernsey- tender

Cobh- dock right in town

Liverpool- dock on Mersey right in town 2 mins from Albert Bocks (fabulous)

Kirkwall- new dock beautiful scenery

Edinburgh- tender into Sout Queensferry ( drop anchor right by Forth Bridge-fantastic view)

Not many industrial docks on British Isles cruise.

Agreed, look at the map associated with the itinerary, you'll see more from whatever side is facing land, but like others said, most ports are industrial and don't see much of the city.

Le Harve, Dublin, Greenock, and Belfast to name four that are industrial.

Around 9 pm look on the starboard side to see the white cliffs of dover. You will see it the night before reaching Le Havre, France. We were on Promenade deck at the time. Had to run back to cabin to get camera.

Guernsey, Cobh, Liverpool or Kirkwall depending on cruise and South Queensferry to name four thatv are not in an industrial port with lovely views so your post stating "most" ports are in industrial container ports was incorrect.

I think you'll be happy either way - going in and out of the various ports were lovely either way. BUT - on our cruise, the starboard side got wonderful views of the Isle of Skye! We went up on one of the decks to watch, but seeing it from our balcony would have been great. (Not complaining - I got to see it!) Terrific cruise. You'll have a wonderful time!
