Rare BlueRiband Posted May 25, 2016 #377 Share Posted May 25, 2016 Blohm+Voss put out their own English language press release: Blohm+Voss May 23, 2016. The third paragraph describes some heavy mechanical work. The drydock time for all this is a mere 21 days - she moves to the passenger terminal June 17-21. There is also a link to a webcam although it's a still image: Blohm+Voss Rapair Webcam

These were already lengthened once. I also wonder if the scrubbers will change the footprint of the funnel? In other cases it usually means a wider base as well as a wider funnel itself. Yes lots of work for 3 weeks. Quite ambitious I would say. Not sure I would want to be sailing on the first cruise after this major refit.
BigMac1953 Posted May 25, 2016 #379 Share Posted May 25, 2016 Maybe it's just me, but talk of QM2 getting new scrubbers conjures up images of a gaggle of wee wummin, with their hair wrapped in headscarves, stockings rolled down, wearing flowery housecoats, coming on board, carrying mops and pails and scrubbing brushes. Must be a Scottish thing. Stewart
suzyed Posted May 25, 2016 #380 Share Posted May 25, 2016 You could remove the Winter Garden for all Cunard ships because you hardly ever see anyone it in. It's always struck me as useless space and I'm surprised they bother to keep it. I hear that they are replacing it! But for the first time, I saw it well used on our recent sailing. It was used for Spa lectures and I saw many people using it during the day for reading and relaxing.
suzyed Posted May 25, 2016 #381 Share Posted May 25, 2016 Because it's a big area and not really used. Those you do see are either asleep or possibly even dead.;) LOL! We were looking for seats in the pub and there were two men slumped in there seats at a table by the window. I mean, almost reclining!! I admit I did check to see if they were breathing!!! LOL! :D
suzyed Posted May 25, 2016 #382 Share Posted May 25, 2016 One thing I've never done is watch a film on board. I've been to quite a lot of lectures mind you. I think that's because I can watch a film anywhere when on land (not that I ever go to the cinema anyway, but I could) but the same is not true of listening to someone stand up and speak. The casino does not seem to get used that much I feel. A lot of the time it's closed, especially during the day (I think that's a customs/gaming laws thing). I have used it (both on the QV and QM2), but only slot machines. And hardly anyone seems to use the tables. The only time I've taken part in a casino event is when I played tournament blackjack on the QM2. On our recent sailing on QM2 the tables were mostly quiet during the day...thus they posted lower minimum bets which brought in a few more players. After dinner the tables were pretty busy as were the Slots. I have a favorite slot and there were only two of those machines, so I frequently had to wait an hour or more to get on that particular machine. They had a slot tournament (which I won...$150...yay) and that was fun!
Rare BlueRiband Posted May 27, 2016 #383 Share Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) Another webcam where one can see a a familiar profile in the background. It's unfortunate the Blohm+Voss doesn't appear to maintain their cams. On the previous link it appeared that one was intended to be a closer view of the Elbe 17 drydock but it's slipped down to only show passing harbor traffic. Love that ship too....but would also love to see the work being done!:) I could very well imagine that it is up to the discretion of Blohm und Voss and Cunard of what is distributed to the public, because who would give away his know-how so easily? However, I am quite certain that there will be all kinds of publications available once the work has been done . cruiseluvva Posted May 27, 2016 #388 Share Posted May 27, 2016 I have heard that Cunard have listened to passengers and the Chart Room is to stay. That would please everyone I think. .. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk The Commodore announced last week that a space was being found for the Chart Room during the refit next May. Rare BlueRiband Posted May 27, 2016 #391 Share Posted May 27, 2016 (edited) Cunard has posted an image from the Elbe 17 drydock on their twitter page. It looks like they are getting right to work as a crane appears to be positioned over the area for the new deck 13 staterooms. Rare BlueRiband Posted May 27, 2016 #392 Share Posted May 27, 2016 Cunard has set up a separate twitter site just for the refit: #QM2Remastered. For those who cannot get enough of their favorite ship, the water is being drained overnight. The Blohm+Voss webcam shows her lit up with work lights. (BTW, it's such a low resolution that there is hardly any detail even at 200X. Not likely to give away any trade secrets.)
NSWP Posted May 28, 2016 #393 Share Posted May 28, 2016 We are on QM2 on 2 March 2017, Sydney - Hong Kong. First time on Cunard. Are the cabins getting a refurbish, i.e. new beds/carpet/furniture?
Aussieflyer Posted May 28, 2016 #394 Share Posted May 28, 2016 (edited) We are on QM2 on 2 March 2017, Sydney - Hong Kong. First time on Cunard. Are the cabins getting a refurbish, i.e. new beds/carpet/furniture? There is a list of the cabin grades and when they are being refurbished - will hunt it out for you and add it to this post. From memory it is the Grills and balconies (maybe not all?) this year and the ocean view and insides during 2017. You'll be on not long before me - I did that cruise in 2014 and had a wonderful time. Still tossing up whether to book HKK to SIN or DXB to Southampton to go with the 10 days or perhaps a shorter one in Australian waters before then. Here it is Uncle Les https://ask.cunard.com/help/cunard/fleet/refit_schedule Edited May 28, 2016 by Aussieflyer
DDBINK1 Posted May 28, 2016 #395 Share Posted May 28, 2016 Bluemarble, thanks for the picture. I was thinking on all the discussion on the site and had a thought about the changes and upgrades to the ship. I think the staff at Cunard are doing a great job. They are giving their best ideas and trying to keep QM2, QV and QE up to date with all the latest great things that make cruising and traveling on Cunard a fantastic experience. I want to say Thank You to all those that are working on this endeavor. And, Keep up the good work.

Here it is Uncle Les https://ask.cunard.com/help/cunard/fleet/refit_schedule Thanks AussieFlyer, saw that schedule, we have a deck 4 sheltered balcony which according to schedule will be done before the 2017 WC. Some good prices on QM2 for 2017WC sectors in Australia/NZ/Asia. A lot of money is spent on keeping the ships up to scratch, i.e. we were on Aurora last year, Southampton to east coast of USA/Canada and return, Carnival had just spent £20 million on her refit, she looked brand new. Thanks again. Edited May 28, 2016 by NSWP

It looks like they are getting right to work as a crane appears to be positioned over the area for the new deck 13 staterooms.Hi BlueRiband It seems that the teak decking on Deck 13 was lifted during the Southampton-Hamburg trip. It is now stacked up ready for removal, exposing the steel deck beneath. So I suspect that the crane is there to remove the wood, and of course the other things getting in the way of the new cabins (the splash pool, hot tubs, wind break, toilets, Regatta Bar etc). It is six months (almost to the day) before I get to see the results of this work :( Best wishes :) Edited May 28, 2016 by pepperrn

Thanks again. I had a sheltered Balcony on Deck 6 last time. It was great, especially as it was an upgrade from an inside guarantee. Pushka (who posts on CC as well) had a sheltered balcony on Deck 4 I think. We have both booked obstructed view balcony guarantees for the Singapore to Dubai cruise so it will be interesting to see who gets what, not that we are worried, anything on QM2 is wonderful.
