Too much smoke in Casinos

And it always happens that a smoker sits next to me waving their cigarette in my face.

While smoke may wander slightly to the non-smoking side, no-one will sit beside you holding a cigarette when you're there. It's usually pretty well sign posted, but if you're not sure, ask at the bar which is the non-smoking side and that will alleviate one problem.

When I started this thread, I didn't mean for it to be non-smokers against smokers.

I know that casinos are smokey - but I wanted to use my free spins and even that is hard with the smoke. The casino was next to the Schooner Bar on the ship, and we could smell the smoke - it was over-whelming.

The point I was trying to make was it is SMOKEY - PERIOD.

When there were non-smoking nights in the casinos, my husband and I did go.

Could there be better ventilation? Or actually have a small non-smoking casino in another part of the larger ships? It just appears as though the smoke is worse now.

That's a great idea! It would certainly make both parties happy.

The only drawback would be that something (bar, restaurant, shop, guest room) has to go to make room for the non-smoking casino. While I don't think RCL would do it - I think it's a perfect solution!

I'm not sure if there's much more to be done about the ventilation before you have cards blowing off of the tables  The smoke in the casino is absolutely worse now simply due to the fact that it's the only remaining indoor space where smoking is permitted, so that's where the smokers are going to end up, especially at night or if the weather is bad.

The idea of walling off a section of machines behind glass or something like that sounds like it might work but I don't see the cost benefit of having a separate section for table games in such a small space...

Full disclaimer: I'm a nonsmoker and don't react well to smoke. It's just one of those things.

HOWEVER, in "real life" it's usually pretty easy to avoid the smokers, and almost all of them don't want to do anything to offend anybody.

The casino on RCI ships is a total failure of engineering and air exchanges! That is not the smokers fault! I don't like being around smoke, don't like my clothes to smell of it, etc., but the ONLY way to do what RCI has attempted in their casinos is to have DOZENS (plural) of air exchanges per minute, and meticulous cleaning of all their soft surfaces. They simply don't have either, and that makes what would probably be an irritant a major problem on their ships.

We did a 12 night on Brilliance this summer. On most nights, there were a handful of people in the casino, and a minority of those were smoking. Yet, somehow, the entire Centrum reeked of old smoke, the kind that's oxidized and aged and clings to everything. And that was on nights when there were typically 1-2 people smoking in the casino.

As a non-smoker, in a perfect world there wouldn't be smoking on the ship at all. And, indoor smoking will go away eventually. It's a business decision to allow it today. Indoor smoking in public spaces is banned in pretty much the entire EU, which was inconceivable 20 years ago. So, it's coming. But, until then, if a company like RCI is going to allow it, the onus is on them to engineer the HVAC to handle the smoke, and, in my experience, they're failing in that regard. Which also fails the smokers!

OP, please pardon the diversion here..

(re: Celebrity's non-smoking casinos - )

I did not know this and it might make me switch to Celebrity sooner than I thought I would! :D

staggr, yes - with your Diamond C&A status, you are entitled to reciprocal status on Celebrity (not points, but status - "Elite") and they have excellent onboard benefits including complimentary evening cocktails, Elite breakfast in a specialty restaurant, some free laundry and Internet, plus the added benefit of no smoking being permitted inside the entire ship- it's all good.

We enjoyed our first Celebrity cruise a few months ago and will definitely be booking another one. :)

How can it be too smokey when you are in a smoking area?

Obviously you've never been in the cigar bar on Princess. It will make your eyes water.

"Like"

Reminds me of someone going to a Chinese Restaurant and complaining that there isn't Enchiladas on the menu.

I have never smoked and don't enjoy being in smoke filled areas. On a cruise ship, since balcony smoking and smoking in most bars is not allowed, the casino bar and the casino itself are the only indoor areas to smoke. I think the casino is much smokier now, even with a non-smoking side. I stay away from the casino and leave it to the people who still smoke.

I don't demonize people who smoke and let them have their areas. Many good and decent people have this bad habit that is hard to kick.

is there a mechanism to report people who smoke on balconies and if so what is the procedure?

and did said reporting even change the behavior?

You can call security. We did not notice the people next to us smoking for the rest of the cruise.

Some of the Las Vegas hotels seem to handle the smoke smell pretty well. The Venetian may be he best - it always smells very "fresh" in there. I am guessing they have spent quite a bit of money on their ventilation systems, and it's probably not something feasible on a cruise ship.

I can't handle the smoke either so I limit my time in the casino to when it first opens in the morning, it seems smokers sleep in late :) Or if there is a day when the ship is in Labadee or Coco Cay & most folks are ashore. Some ships do have better air cleaners, I was on the Explorer last Feb and the air in the casino had a fruity non smokey smell all of the time. Aside from the smoke and smell, I really get annoyed when a smoker sits at a machine for an hour playing about $5, just to have a place to sit & smoke. It's a shame they eliminated the no smoking on formal nights, I definitely stay out of the casino then, the smoke is hard to get out of my dress clothes.

Fortunately for most cruises that I go on, the ports we go into have land based casinos that have better non smoking areas and pay off better. So I get my penny slot fun off of the ship. I especially like the casinos in Canada, they are totally non smoking.

That's the thing: once they banned smoking on balconies and told smokers to use the casino, they did nothing to upgrade the ventilation in there. The smoke drifts out of the casino and into other areas of the ship, even worse than before. It's awful. :(:(:(

I know my clothes always smell like smoke after I am in a casino on a ship. Lately I have packed a spray like Febreeze and spray my clothing before I hang in up in the closet. Sometimes I even lay that clothing on a chair or cabin couch and it smells ok the next day.

For those who have experienced another passenger smoking on a balcony:

  1. how do you know who it is?
  2. can you actually see them smoking?
  3. does the smoke waft directly to the next balcony?
  4. what if it's a passenger below/above you, but you thought it was next to you?
  5. does the crew come in to check the staterooms for cigarettes?

This is always an interesting subject.

LOL! Sorry, bouhunter. I was just curious.

Can you supply answers to my questions? Or perhaps steer (pardon the pun!) me to the threads that can?

When we called on the smokers next to us...YES we could see them smoking, they didn't try to hide it and YES it came directly to our balcony...we were aft of them and as we moved forward...boy, we didn't think we could even use our balcony. It's very possible they were unaware of the non smoking policy since they did not appear to speak English. I don't know if the crew looks for cigarettes in a stateroom BUT our room steward told us HE would be in big trouble if they were smoking on the balcony or in the room. Maybe because it is an offence he is supposed to report? Or maybe because he has to do deep cleaning after the cruise. I don't know.

There was a thread here a couple weeks ago where people said they protested all week long about smoking on the balcony near them and nothing was ever done. Sounded very frustrating for them...:( I think they said they even showed ships staff pictures of the smokers.

Allure had a set one side as non smoking, but it didn't help that much. Clothes still smelled like smoke after less than an hour in there.

Also noticed Allure had a rather large section on the pool deck set aside as smoking. It was the only place were there were free lounge chairs so we went back to the room.

Thanks, bouhunter. Yes, reporting and not having anything done about the offense would surely deem frustrating.

Whenever we cruise we avoid the casino, but may use our free pulls the first day. Most of the time I find it easy enough to avoid the smoke. The one exception was on the Oasis and the smoke from the casino just seemed to pour out of the casino into the MDR entrance. The MDR wasn't bad but we were sitting pretty far back. I suspect we would have needed to move if we were near the doors.

It would be nice for Royal to have a divided non-smoking section with a couple of table games and slots. See if it's worth it and how much use they get out of it. If they divided it properly so it's truly non-smoking, they may find it to be a worthwhile endeavour.

(I grew up with a heavily smoking parent. There are lots of smokers who try to be very considerate, but there's definitely a range of smoking folks which includes some awfully inconsiderate ones.)

Why are you continually so rude to others? Perhaps you could just move along if something bothers you or doesn't interest you. We are here (most of us!) to help each other with cruising related questions because we love to cruise. Yes, after you've been here for a while you start to see the same things repeated, but that's NO EXCUSE for rudeness.

Please... I'm asking you to be kinder and more tolerant on this board.
