I wish I had brought.....

As a first time cruiser, friends have told me to bring large beach towel pegs which attach to deck chair to stop towels from blowing off balcony; a hanging shoe bag with lots of pockets, to hang on bathroom door; a hanging ring with pegs attached to hang up swimmers to dry; laundry bag to carry clothes to laundry and a couple of laundry tablets; highlighter pens to highlight activities in the cruise paper, post it notes, & small first aid kit. So, as first time cruisers, would love to hear if these things would be a good idea, from people who would know.

 

On our last couple cruises, my wife and I have used the shoe rack that attaches to a door for all of the bathroom items. Its always worked well and makes the small bathrooms feel a little larger without all of the items scattered on the counter.:D

I'm a planner so please indulge me. As a first time cruiser I would really appreciate it if our well travelled members could finish the sentence for me. Maybe just think back to your first cruise and try to remember if there is one thing you did not bring and would now not travel without.

I think I've covered the obvious of too many clothes, every document imaginable and adapters for the power points. What's not so obvious?

Superglue! One of the nose pieces came off my glasses on the second day of our last cruise. Luckily Guest Services were able to supply me with some superglue to repair them - the sellotape didn't work very well. :rolleyes:

 

My travel kit now contains some tiny one-use tubes of superglue. It only took us half an hour to find the glue section of the Noumea Casino Supermarket. :eek:

 

OK, OK, we did get distracted by the awesome charcuterie and cheese sections, not to mention the huge tins of foie gras. :D DH is threatening to move to Noumea! :p

Post-it pads. Write what you want to do that day from whatever is on and it can fit on the back of your cruise card or if you are like me the small map of the ship they give you when you board. Saves carrying big sheets of paper around as it fits neatly into pocket.

Lots of Aussie magnets to pin things to the metal walls. You can buy them in packs of 6-8 in the dollar shop. We take the ones with a thermometre too and give the lot to crew or new international friends, when the cruise is over.

 

We take blu tac as well to attach our own itinerary pages to the wall. This includes flight times, other accommodation, excursion details, etc and can be added to as you sail eg Captains Cocktail Party, destination talk time or drink/meal dates with new friends. Maybe even a shopping/art event :)

 

A map to attach to the wall.

 

Always our own washing powder, anti static/nice smelling thingies for the dryer.

 

And it goes without saying that on every cruise line that has those wall dispenser things in the shower - take your own soap, shampoo and conditioner.

one of those fold up fabric shopping bags that fold up into a tiny square. I always carry one in my handbag. On my first port day, the handle of my beach bag broke. I was able to use the fabric bag to carry all my stuff. (yes, I know you can buy beach bags on board but I find them too bulky).

 

If you are a bookworm like me and dont have a kindle, go to the charity shops a month or so before your cruise and stock up on cheap but good books that you want to read and then once read, donate them to the onboard library for other cruisers to enjoy.

 

Does anyone take their own picnic drinkware on board? My cabin had no glassware at all apart from 2 small glasses in the bathroom. I had brought on board two bottles of champagne. Wasnt sure if the room steward supplies glassware on request? Luckily, my friend was on the cruise before me and had organised with my room steward to have a gift waiting in my cabin. A Cruising Queen mug - I used that for my champagne - lol!

 

If you are on RCI and any members of your cabin plan to ice-skate - pack long pants and socks.

I always pack binoculars, especially for balcony viewing.

I also pack some plastic cups (not disposable ones) and a cork screw mainly for use on port days if we manage to stop for an impromptu picnic.:D

I don't think I saw them mentioned but small and medium clear plastic

baggies can come in handy. Esp. if you need to put ice cubes on a sprain, a cut, or a bite.

 

Hand Sanitizer in a bottle that is sold with a plastic carrying case, that can be attached to purse/belt/whatever, that keeps it right at hand, when you are out on excursions.

 

In some countries, I have carried toilet seat covers, where that amenity is not available or not a usual thing. TP in a small roll is also nice to have, in some areas, and "Kleenex" tissues are always a good choice, esp. where laundries are not available on the ship. Cheers! hmh:):)
