I wish I had brought.....

Recommended Posts

In regard to the Hand Sanitizer that come in a "thingie" to hook it on to your jacket, etc, I was thinking of the Purell Brand, but I have also seen similar at Bath & Body Works, if that's in Au/NZ. I think you can also find them In the "Travel Stuff" bins at grocery/pharmacy stores. The "WET ONES

sheets come in a pack of about 15 and there are also the small, handy wipes that are in about 2x2 packets in boxes of 50s or so.

This topic has been very interesting and I'm sure there are lots more "I Should Have" ideas floating (no pun intended) around this forum . Cheers!:D hmh

Unfortunately we don't have Bath and Body Works down here.

Ā

The nice thing about Hands First is it is a foam and alcohol-free, so it doesn't dry out your hands.

Ā

The individual packs of Wet Ones are useful, especially when hands are a bit grubby, but the downside is that you have to then find somewhere to dispose of the used tissue. Hopefully most people will take it back onboard and dispose of it in their cabin bin.

Thats an excellent one . We always take a small torch, never needed it , but in the event of a ships power failure, those cabins and corridors can be very dark.

Ā

I bought myself a camping headlight torch with a webbing harness to wear on my head leaving my hands free in an emergency. Only cost me AUD$4 and the 3 lithium batteries were provided with the torch. HTH, I don't know what shops you have access to in New Zealand.

Ā

Already booked for my next cruise, and in browsing the forum today, have found a possible hotel close to Circular Quay, must price it but it's another option! I've forgotten who mentioned it, but I'm very grateful for the "head's up.! I can vouch for easy luggage drop off at Circular Quay. Tax is at Melbourne-the queue was very lengthy. I was lucky to be met by a friend and taken to join another friend for lunch-delicious and delightful company. She was in a bit of a panic as she couldn't enter Station Pier and could only see the ferry for Tasmania (forgotten the correct name!) the Golden Princess was completely hidden. WAS she glad when I made phone contact and confirmed I was disembarked and being assisted up to meet her-then interrupted myself to exclaim, "I can see you!" waving frantically with my free hand! Even Bass Strait being a little 'bouncy" hasn't put me off, just didn't go up to Skywalkers on Sunday and took an anti-nausea tablet as a precaution-and slept like a log Sunday night, a rather unexpected consequence! :D

Lots of Aussie magnets to pin things to the metal walls. You can buy them in packs of 6-8 in the dollar shop. We take the ones with a thermometre too and give the lot to crew or new international friends, when the cruise is over.

Ā

We take blu tac as well to attach our own itinerary pages to the wall. This includes flight times, other accommodation, excursion details, etc and can be added to as you sail eg Captains Cocktail Party, destination talk time or drink/meal dates with new friends. Maybe even a shopping/art event :)

Ā

A map to attach to the wall.

Ā

Always our own washing powder, anti static/nice smelling thingies for the dryer.

Ā

And it goes without saying that on every cruise line that has those wall dispenser things in the shower - take your own soap, shampoo and conditioner.

Ā

OOOH! THAT'S what I need to go and price for November's cruise-magnets! Must check out The Reject Shop and Cheap As Chips (not quite as easy for me to find things in but slightly different range of stock) and possibly Dimmeys to get a basic price then put magnets on the list to buy!

You can get a belt clip for the 50ml Hands First bottles. https://www.handsfirst.com.au/products/50ml-reusable-belt-clips/

Ā

Thanks for the heads up re the clip-on. I was expecting something more "concealed", like a pouch.

I've used Hand First once before and liked it, but the 50 ml size is on the large size for my needs. Personally, I prefer the smaller Purell.

Ā

Someone mentioned ziploc bags - a few small and medium sizes for storing those yummy cookies for midnight snacks.

Also a jar of your favorite coffee, thermos mugs and a spoon. Keep these in your room, adding coffee just before you go up to the buffet. Unless you're a tea drinker or buy the IC coffee, the stuff in the dispenser is definitely an acquired taste.

Was this the Purell "thingie" you were thinking of?

If so, they have them at the Chemist Warehouse.

Great picture of the Purell product. You can probably get the holders in various color holders to match your travel outfits; and they occasionally put them out in various scents. The small ones are refillable, which makes them handy to have in every purse or coat pocket. Enough Said!!!HMH:)

We use similar product for keeping hands sanitised. We also keep a little towel and a product that has soap sheets https://www.latestbuy.com.au/travel-paper-soap/ for when our hands are a bit dirtier,

just need a small amount of water from your drink bottle, soap up with the sheet and rinse off followed by the towel. Very handy.

They look useful, Mic. I might get some to keep in the car. Wet Ones tend to dry out after a while.

Ā

I have found them really useful for when hiking or similar and there is no taps or other water source and your hands are dirty. A few drops of water to wet the hands and perhaps a cap full of water to rinse off.:D

A very large zip lock bag or strong plastic bag plus small bottle of quality front loading clothes washing detergent for washing clothes when there is no bath. (front loading because there are less suds and it is easier to rinse)

Ā

A mobile pharmacy (panadol, antiseptic cream, imodium, antibiotics, antihistamine, cold tabs etc) - we rarely have to use them but it is good to have them on hand.

Ā

Multiple thin plastic folders in different colours to store/sort different types of documents

Ā

Hand Sanitiser to wipe slot machine buttons before play

Ā

US dollars for tips and casino

Ā

Bottles of sparkling water - you can bring on a few bottles and it is nice to have them in your state room

Ā

Small collapsible cooler for shore in hot places (sometimes)

Ā

Shopping bag that folds into very small rectangle for purchases.

Ā

Citymaps to go app pre-loaded with ports of call - doesn't need internet data and you can tell where you are.

I also include gastrolyte for rehydration and, after a fairly recent cruise, Zovirax cold sore ointment - the ship only had some horrible teatree cream that also had menthol in it. I think it actually aggravated the cold sore instead of helping to heal it.

Or...

Ā

Clean out an ice bucket (i usually carry washing up liquid to clean out my reusable drink bottle each day) and use it to handwash clothes....

Not as effective as the Plastic Bag Washing Machine. With a strong ziplock bag you can seal it with clothes, water and detergent inside and shake it all about. It works very well.

Ā

Ā

Ā

I use the body wash in the dispenser in the shower to wash clothes.

Sorry for my long list but I have taken 25 cruises and have learned a lot.

Ā

First, half the clothes that you want to pack.

A hanging 3 row, 9 pocket shoe bag with two round magnets to hang on the bathroom door.

Highlighters.

1 gallon zip lock bag with detergent pods. 1 pod per wash does lots of lingerie.

Pen and pad to get people's email addresses that you meet on the ship

Bug spray or bug spray wipes

My own shampoo and conditioner

Lanyard or you will have to buy one

Small sewing kit

OTC medication

2 pairs of eyeglasses

Eye glass repair kit

Tape

Blu tac is super handy to stop rattles and squeaks in cupboards, light fittings, wall panels, wind whistling in through balcony doors, anything that rattles in rough seas, you will be surprised what rattles in a bit of rough water, also check your cabin door they can have a bit of movement in the lock just jam a folded up bit of paper in the door jamb gap to stop it rattling.
