Shorts in MDR

That's one of the truly amusing things about those who post on cruise critic. Too many of us seem to think our opinions on how cruise lines should be managed are the only ones that matter. I just love those posts that begin: "I'm a Double Elite Diamond Plus with Horseshoes and Blue Feathers and I think..."

Oooohhhhh! Can I please use that line in future! I love it! I might need it to be pink and blue feathers though if you were so kind.

Several people challenged these posters on whether they actually did what they reported and the posters were adamant that they did. Other posters agreed with these actions and said they would do the same things. Still, I don't have video tape so it could have been bombast.

 

Let me ask you this. Suppose they were bragging about things they didn't really do. Would that change your opinion of whether you would want to share a table with them? Which is worse, bragging about acting in an obnoxious manner or bragging about doing obnoxious things when you really didn't? In the first case, they were obnoxious. In the second, they wanted others to think they were obnoxious.

 

Anything is possible but I think they were probably blowing smoke.

 

Most of the obnoxius stuff I have seen is how some passengers treat crew members. And I have seen more of that on Celebrity than some other cruise lines.

I don't know why shorts ( and jeans) drives some people nuts. I live in a so called conservative dress zone urban area, Washington DC. and in the summer it seems like everyone is wearing shorts when not at work. Including out in the evening. Onboard cruise ships in the Caribbean and Bermuda almost everyone is wearing shorts all day including for lunch and breakfast in the main dining room. It is the same ship in the evening as during the day. As I mentioned I have sat at the table with table mates who were wearing shorts at dinner in the elegant dining room on Royal Caribbean and it didn't change anything. It did not bother me, I would not say anything to them or the Maitre D. All you can see of sitting people dining is their tops anyway.

It is the same ship in the evening as during the day. Some make such a big deal out of men wearing a jacket to the MDR. What percentage do you think remove their jackets and hang them over the chair before they sit down? We could end this discussion if the cruise line would just sew sleeves on the chairs and we could have formal night every night.

Shorts in the dining room? Really? Just because X is loosening the formal night doesn't mean shorts will be allowed. Talk about tilting at windmills.

 

X no longer challenges people who ignore "suggestions". You will witness shorts and destination shirts in the dining room on every cruise. They are so common that a whole plane load of cruisers must have lost their luggage.

 

And if we wish to talk about comfort as the only reason to wear what one does, shorts are the least of our worries.

As a traditionalist I still believe in following rules, suggestions and requests made by the host... But I do exceed the speed limit on some highways...

 

Modern luxury must mean, as some remember as "X the rules".

You are certainly correct, I can't recall anyone on board who was not a pleasure to be around. Some have even suggested that cruise critic members are not representative of the passengers on a cruise ship.

 

If I were at a table where someone insisted that an arriving passenger be seated elsewhere, I would inform the waiter to find a four-top since we no longer wanted to remain at that table.

Wow. You are either extremely tolerant or lucky to attract such nice people. Whenever I have been forced into accepting a traditional dining arrangement with strangers, either at the MDR or on shore excursions I always find myself at a table with some obnoxious person who finds something insignificant to complain loudly about.

 

Amazingly, I've never noticed any of these types of people wearing shorts.

If we were seated at a table in the dining room and a baseball cap wearing person, reversed or not, wearing his muscle shirt with underarm hair displayed and jumping all over the table as the CSI guys have all demonstrated, we would move. That visual description is unfortunately all too common.

 

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then most likely it is a duck.

I never witnessed that person on Celebrity but I did on Carnival. Are you sure you're talking about the right cruise line? :D

I've never understood the attraction of traditional dining. It's not that we attract nice people or that there are not some who are less than pleasant on board. We just choose not to let those who are less than pleasant affect our cruise. We quickly forget them and move on. Life is less stressful that way.

Done like a true gentleman. Just ask to be moved and don't let it bother you. And look upon the positive side, you'll have a great story to post here on cruise critic.

For some reason, I just feel like I have to comment. I just don't understand how the mere mention of a certain article of clothing such as "shorts" or "jeans" can get people all up in arms. While I would probably not wear shorts to the dining room (just not my style) I would definitely wear jeans.

 

To me, it is not the fact that they are jeans or shorts. It has to do with the fit, cut, quality of material, etc. Quite honestly, nothing looks worse to me than people in "frumpy" dress clothes that are dated and/or ill fitting. I would much rather see a man in stylish jeans, button down shirt and sport coat with leather loafers than one stuffed into a suit from 1995.

 

And just so you don't think I am picking on men, I feel the same way about women wearing poorly fitting church dresses from 20 years ago as well.

 

I think we can all agree that someone in muddy jeans coming in from the garden in a sweat stained t shirt is unacceptable. But just because clothing is less formal does not mean it is dirty or sloppy or that the person lacks class.

That sounds clear but is that going to be put on paper? In the Daily's, Documents and on the Web Site? I ask because I have noticed you have posted stuff here that is not transmitted to your customers.

I can't remember a single person in shorts in the main dining room the last two weeks. Formal nights were ignored by maybe 20% of diners with most men wearing trousers and a short or long sleeve shirt most nights. Met a lot of nice people mixed in with one or two I would be happy never to meet again which I think is pretty standard on most cruise lines. Many of the very nicest people I met were the crew who were pretty much a pleasure in general.
