Careful CDN OBC Purchasers

Off on my "Escape" and was going through the paper work.

I had purchased OBC at the "adjusted" CDN rate and noticed, as an example...

If I purchased $100 USD OBC I was charged $111.11 CDN but my CC was only charged $111.10 and a balance of a 0.01 was owing.

On my last cruise, I guess this happened as well since I had to go and show them proof I paid. They comped the penny but it took 3 days before I got the OBC on my account.

Any ways, look at your Amenity Invoice carefully, to make sure all is taken care of and bring proog that you paid...even if off by a penny.

This penny thing has popped up in a few threads before for people paying in CAD.

I had it happen with my cruise fare.

Casofilia the same as I recall.

Someone else with a goodies purchase, and someone else with OBC.

It's some sort of rounding error.

It's annoying, but since we used to get a favourable exchange rate, I put up with it :)

Sadly 1.33 on my upcoming February cruise (1.16 on upcoming November.) Ah well, the way our man-child prime minister is driving the currency into the dirt, perhaps by February even the 1.33 will be a good deal.

I'd make a comment about King Harper starting the slide - but anybody that has been watching this unfold knows the root cause doesn't come from within Canada (FYI - it's all about a strengthening USD and the price of oil, blame OPEC!).

I have a 1.08 on my march cruise. Sorry didn't know the penny was a common...repost 😟

It's probably good you brought it up.

Just wanted you to know you're not alone.

Hope you get it sorted.

I certainly did. It was after the costs of the actual cruises for the two of us were rounded.

It was difficult getting anything done from here in New Zealand but in the long run it didn't make any difference. I was able to print off my documents.

I did carry a rather old dented Canadian penny just in case!! Wasn't needed.

Has anyone just bought obc and pay the 3% to cash in at casino then take the cash home. At those rates of 1.16 I'm thinking about it. It costs me around 1.4 at the bank to exchange

In another thread - it was reported that the cash from the casino later showed up as a USD charge to their CC and wasn't taken from the pre-purchased OBC!

So - I'm hoping others report back on their experiences!

He's been in power officially for little more than a month. Do you honestly believe that he is responsible for this? Canada is a resource based economy and when the resources are down, so is the dollar. In fact Canada's economy is tied closer to the price of oil than any other major currency. The correlation between the Canadian dollar and the benchmark West Texas Intermediate oil price is about 0.56, meaning the two have a strong positive relationship. That’s the closest association among 16 of the world’s most-traded currencies including the Australian and New Zealand dollars, Norway’s krone and Brazil’s real. So come on. If you want to blame him for something like marijuana legalization, fine. But to imply he has anything to do with the dollar, a month after taking power? You're only fooling yourself. The dollar has been on this slide for over a year when Harper was in power.

mmm... red flavoured kool-aid.

Campaigning on running a deficit crushed our dollar. It's going to get worse when Junior's deficit spending actually hits and our bank rates stay low. Cruising is getting disproportionately more expensive for those of us who get paid in CAD.

I guess we'll always have Cuba. Well, not always, once the Castro monarchy collapses that'll get expensive too. But for now more and more Canadians will be priced out of cruising and priced into a week at an all-inclusive in Varadero.

I'm sorry - but that's delusional.

Do you really think that anybody in New York or London cares about Canada's campaign promises?!?!

I live in the only riding in Canada with green Kool-Aid...

LOL. Too funny. And incredibly disrespectful for a Prime Minister who decimated his competition.

Just checked my credit card and with the exchange rate and the 2.5% service fee it's almost a 1 to 1.49 (might as well say 1 5) exchange rate....

Prebuy what you can for your trip before Junior hikes the GST. That'll be another 2-3%.

Will be interesting to see if any cruise line tries to dominate the market by giving Canadian residents extremely good residency-rates. If not, a serious swath of Canadians will be opting to stay home. Capacity/load will dictate that of course; I wonder on the Caribbean routes Canadians (used to) make up more than 10% of the passengers.

Wow - you really need to do some research before posting.

FYI - you don't pay GST on foreign cruises. Not to mention that you obviously have no clue about about what taxes are being changed by the Liberals...

Erm, xcell was talking about a form of staycation--xcell would pay the GST on any in-Canada vacation. "Touring Canada this year," xcell wrote.

This isn't a politics forum and you've already made up your mind on Junior so I shouldn't even bother pointing out that it's easy to google that the Liberals are looking at raising the GST. Was just trying to help xcell save a couple percent on his in-Canada holiday.

Jan 2014 - price of Oil - $99USD/barrel

Jan 2014 - Canadian dollar - 93 cents USD

Aug 2014 - price of Oil - $97USD/barrel

Aug 2014 - Canadian dollar - 92 cents USD

Nov 2014 - price of Oil - $66USD/barrel

Nov 2014 - Canadian Dollar - 88 cents USD

Jan 2015 - price of Oil - $48 USD/barrel

Jan 2015 - Canadian dollar 83 cents USD

(seeing a pattern yet? No? Well, let me continue)

Jul 2015 Just before the election call when Trudeau was dead last and widely considered a joke

Oil - $46USD/barrel

Canadian dollar - 79 cents USD

So during the last 18 months of Mr Harper's tenure when he was THE guy, the dollar dropped 16 cents and (as I pointed out on my previous post) it fell in direct relation to the price of oil. There's nothing wrong with being a Trudeau hater - I don't like Harper - but to try and argue the dollar's drop has nothing to do with oil and try and pin it on Trudeau is nuts. Google it. It is an easy thing to look up.

I cashed some OBC at the casino and paid the 3% in November and had no problem.

This forum has gotten very political and it was all started by comments in post #2 by Shawnino who now states it should not be about politics!!! I guess only he is allowed to make nasty comments about political leaders.
