riffatsea Posted January 27, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2016 Hi, Wondering why you don't just fly home from SAN? It is a pain to get up to LAX and quite costly unless you take the train(3hrs +another 45min. by bus from the train station to the airport) OR rent a car and drop at LAX which is only 2hrs if no traffic. Since it is at least a 2hr ride car or shuttle transfers are usually a couple of hundred $$s.
CruiserBruce Posted January 27, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 27, 2016 They won't fly home because there is no flight from SAN to Australia???? qbay46, as stated, it is not easy to get to LAX without renting a car. But you can fly from San Diego to LAX- short 30 minute or less flight- then connect to all the major airlines going to Australia.
qbay46 Posted January 27, 2016 Author #4 Share Posted January 27, 2016 Thanks for you replies, it looks like renting a car will have to be the easiest way, we don't have to rush to get to airport as all carriers to Australia leave around midnight so we can have a look at some sites on the way.Any sites along the way that we should see. SadieN Posted January 27, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 27, 2016 (edited) Either rent a car or Take Amtrak (San Diego station is a 5 minute walk from port) to LA Union Station. Then grab a cab, use a shuttle or take the Flyaway to LAX. Union Station will hold luggage for Amtrak pax. LA Union Station is the last Grande Dame station built. Across the street is ---Olvera Street, the birth place of Los Angeles. (Check out the Avila Adobe and Fire Station 1) Chinatown and Philipe's French Dip. l use their mustard at home. TruckerDave Posted January 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2016 There ARE connecting flights from SAN to LAX to Australia!! That is what I would do. Then depending on what airline(s) used they won't have to touch their luggage until they land down under.

You can drive up the coast through the cities like Solana Beach, Del Mar, Carlsbad etc. Once you get to Oceanside you'd need to jump on the 5 Freeway to cross Camp Pendleton (U.S. Marine Corps base), but once you hit San Clemente you can jump back onto Coast Highway (take the "Beach Cities" exit ). I'd stop in Laguna Beach for lunch and then continue north on Coast Highway through Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, maybe even Seal Beach, but jump back to the freeway (405 Freeway at this point) to get around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Once you get closer to LAX, depending on time, you can either go to Manhattan Beach (very close to LAX) or Santa Monica (20-30 minutes north). Bescotti Posted February 24, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 24, 2016 I had a ship excursion in San Diego with airport transfer then flew SAN - LAX - Australia. Luggage checked all the way through and the cost of the SAN - LAX sector was minimal when added to my international ticket.
kenish Posted February 29, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 29, 2016 Agree that SAN to Oz with a LAX connection is easy and has little additional cost. It's quite possible that it's cheaper to fly from SAN than from LAX due to the Kafkaesque world of airfares! It's especially easy flying American Airlines from SAN-LAX and connecting to Qantas or another AA flight to Oz. AA and QF have a very close partnership at LAX and there's a shuttle bus between T4 and the International Terminal (TBIT) that eliminates the need to go outside security to change terminals. (The bus will soon be replaced with an interconnecting tunnel). That said, the terminals are adjacent and you may want to walk the short distance outside before the very long flight.
