JimandStan Posted February 4, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2016 I normally give the same answer as LHT, because the ship sails out of site of land for 99.5% of the time, but New York Harbor just might be a special case. If you're a hopeless romantic, and want the New York Skyline to pass before you like Kerr and Grant, then you'll want a cabin on the Port (left) side of the ship. If you're a patriotic old so and so and want to see the Statue of Liberty, ask to be on the Starboard (right) side.

MSEm Posted February 4, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks for the quick replies. I will probably go for a Port side because smoking is allowed on Starboard side on pool deck. Any suggestions for Montreal? Will plan to stay 3 nights after docking.
sitraveler Posted February 4, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2016 We loved the Epic Hotel, walked from the hotel to the ship. The smoking area is a small part of the pool deck. The only place you'll smell the smoking is near that area on the pool deck.
canuck.qc Posted February 4, 2016 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2016 My three hotel recommendations: Hotel St.James, The Nelligan, and Place d'Armes. They are excellent boutique hotels in Old Mtl. and in walking distance to the sites.
Rare LHT28 Posted February 4, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 4, 2016 I would say just stay someplace in Old Montreal everything is walkable We liked Springhill Suites

JimandStan Posted February 6, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 6, 2016 Hopefully, O will soon become the first non-smoking cruise line. If they do, Oceania will not be "the first" by a long shot. It's an idea that has been tested and failed many many many times. Even Carnival had a few 100% non smoking ships at one time.
RJB Posted February 6, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 6, 2016 Or just go up to the top deck & see it all :D The best way to do it. During the sail away you can see everything on deck.
newbie60 Posted February 6, 2016 #12 Share Posted February 6, 2016 Ditto on Hotel Nelligan for your three nights post cruise. Regatta happened to overnight there at the end of our cruise and DH and I took half of our luggage to the Nelligan the day before disembarkation. It was barely a 10 minute walk with rolling luggage - no problem whatsoever. Then the next day, we only had small carry-on luggage to schlepp and were at the hotel in minutes to pick up our daylong tour out of the city and into the mountains where the colors were even better than along our cruise route. The Nelligan has an included breakfast and fantastic, large rooms. Walking distance to everything! There is a HoHo bus that will give you a good orientation to the lovely city of Montreal that you might want to try on your first day there. We found excellent restaurants, all within walking distance and also used the subway system to visit the site of the Olympics, Botanical Gardens and Biodome. Ran into an Oceania tour doing that same thing but I'm betting they paid a lot more for their big bus experience than our $2 subway fare and entry tix. lambcom Posted February 8, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 8, 2016 As you sail up the Saint Lawrence, most ships stay closer to the north shore which is the starboard side. Quebec City is on the right side of the ship, as is Montreal. George +
