Thetrail Posted March 1, 2016 #154 Share Posted March 1, 2016 (edited) I'm so very glad that you are the only genius on this board and has all of the facts. You think a lot of yourself or you're are sitting in on RCL board meetings. Go cruise out of FL or SJ and leave Bayonne to the rest of the misinformed.I sail out of Bayonne and Baltimore regularly, including all the ports in Florida and SJ, so what is your rant about exactly????:rolleyes::rolleyes: Edited March 1, 2016 by Thetrail

pdog1 Posted March 1, 2016 #157 Share Posted March 1, 2016 How would changing the class of ship make a difference with cruise problems caused by weather? One question, is it possible they could add a day between sailings during winter months so that they have a little more cushion in case the ship arrives late, needs repairs...etc? I know this effects peoples flights etc so probably would not make much sense.

chengkp75 Posted March 1, 2016 #159 Share Posted March 1, 2016 In terms of the ECA area and the EPA- realistically, Baltimore is identical to New Orleans. There's not much difference between 12 hours and 8 hours (as I recall the time up the river). But the real time is much longer that anyway- as the ECA boundary extends our I think 150 miles- much farther than what is called international waters. So I think the issues with New Orleans runs deeper than that. While I agree that there is a world of difference between Baltimore and NOLA, the RCI ship in Baltimore, the Grandeur, has been equipped with scrubbers, so it isn't going to go anywhere else soon. Problems with cruise ships in NOLA are that the bigger the ship, the slower you have to go in spring when the river is high, to prevent wake damage to the tops of the levees. The USCG Captain of the Port in NOLA is also much more concerned with steering (azipod) problems, since the river winds and twists far more than Chesapeake bay, and will invoke a tug escort more readily. I believe that pilotage is more costly on the river, due to the higher traffic, longer transit, and more confined waters than the Chesapeake. And yes, the ECA extends 200nm from shore, except where another country's waters intrude, so off Miami the ECA is only 20 miles, since that is halfway to the Bahamas. fred30 Posted March 1, 2016 #160 Share Posted March 1, 2016 Out of fourteen cruises half were on the Explorer.Great ship always had a great cruise. :) :) :) Yes, after taking several cruises on the Explorer we couldn't wait to go on the Quantum. So we went on the Inaugural cruise and now we want the Explorer back.

Rare John&LaLa Posted March 3, 2016 #164 Share Posted March 3, 2016 Yeah....it's a shame that some folks are "my way or the highway" mentality when they post. On the plus side....they can be so easily exposed and discounted as such. There are contrasting views on this topic...and that's a good thing. Valid points abound from most of the posters here. But of course no one has a monopoly on their views being right. What is obvious when you read many of the Quantum class ship threads the past 6 months or so...is that there is still plenty of "sting" from the quick decision to move Quantum itself to China, after nearly a year of promotion in the U.S. What is also clear, is that plenty of people understand the risks of launching a large ship from a port located in a climate with volatile winter weather. Not everyone is blind to that reality...there is risk. What has been seen in actual experiences so far is that the risks are not only real, but can be costly to the continued practice for using this port for a large ship...plenty of clear evidence over just the past month alone on that front. Agree or disagree...the fact is that RCI is very likely to be re-evaluating their choices on port assignments for Anthem. That's just smart business thinking on their part. It doesn't guarantee any changes, but allows that they are possible. This story will continue to unfold in the future. She isn't that much bigger than Freedom and better suited for cold weather. I also don't get the price issue. Early January on Oasis out of PC is just over 3 grand for a JS, 7 nights. same time frame on anthem is just over 5 grand for 12 nights. pretty much a wash in my view. Freedom 8 night is $4,400. Am i missing something
Rare xpcdoojk Posted March 3, 2016 #165 Share Posted March 3, 2016 Royal will continue to over charge,as long as we are willing to pay crazy prices.IT WILL NEVER GO DOWN.I will not pay extra for dumb cranes or bumper cars.Looks like we will not cruise Royal for a while.Have a great next cruise,at Explorer prices.;) Yeah, it is called supply and demand. It always amazes me how confused people can be by something so simple. JC
Rare xpcdoojk Posted March 3, 2016 #166 Share Posted March 3, 2016 Thank you for your post, especially since it was done with an opposing view but also posting respect. A few others could learn from your example. People can disagree without insults or demeaning others. I do sincerely mean thank you. As requested, let me respond to your multiple points: 1) I do believe that having Bayonne as a Caribbean destination port from Dec - Mar is indeed a mistake...and for more than 1 reason. Wasting nearly 3 days just to get to & from the Caribbean area - because of the farther starting point - seems foolish. Even more questionable is the need to pack (clothing) for both winter and summer weather on any cruise. Then there's the known travel nightmares and winter storms in that area. Finally, there's the higher costs of air travel, hotels, and cruise itself. 2) By placing a newer/larger ship in the Bayonne home port, the financial and publicity risks tied to a 5,100 passenger newer/more expensive ship just gets amplified. If existing ships were doing the job, expansion is suspect, especially given the points above in #1. 3) It doesn't take 10+ incidents to be considered a disaster. Having two of these in just the past month alone could already be costing RCI plenty...and that doesn't even count the class action lawsuit filed by a couple of passengers for the first case. Having traveled to the NJ/Philly area for more than 20 years - I'm quite aware of the weather issues in that region during winter months. These are not fluke conditions. So...just last week...after a meeting was done on a totally unrelated topic...about 15 people who live there...began a conversation based on "Did you hear about that cruise ship damaged from the storm?" I just listened. Some of their comments (none mine) included: "That cruise line must be nuts to have any cruises leave from this area in the winter - it's always a travel pain just to move around in this area in winter - what were they thinking". "Yeah...stupid planning for sure" "I feel bad for the passengers, but also for the captain and crew that had to deal with those conditions and all those angry passengers". "You have to wonder who dropped the ball to let them leave in the first place." "I hear the lawyers are already involved...so it's probably gonna end up costing them a chunk of money". "Yet another reason not to cruise". Those were just a few samples. Since I had been taking meeting notes anyway...it took little effort to jot down those comments - remembering that they were from people who live in the area and within an hour or so of Bayonne. There are already plenty of posts in various threads discussing plans to cancel Bayonne port winter cruises. So it's not my own views (although I happened to be thinking the very same things that others just said out loud). Of course there will always be 2 different "sides" to this topic. In that regard, it is refreshing to be able to have an adult "conversation" without getting insulted or demeaned - so I appreciated your post specifically. In the end, RCI's view - the only one that will matter in the long run - will drive what does or doesn't happen in the future. So fifteen random people decide what cruises can or can't be done? Seriously??? Kind of says everything anyone needs to know about how you make your judgements.:rolleyes: Any Mariners or sailors or professionals in that random group of 15. I actually can't think of any place on earth more unskilled in knowing about naval matters than a random 15 people from Joisey.... Wow.... JC
Rare xpcdoojk Posted March 3, 2016 #167 Share Posted March 3, 2016 I think that is the problem changing the ship to the Anthem. So if it was the Quantum it would all be good? They are essentially the same ship? Sigh... JC

I specifically booked the Anthem for our Feb cruise over the Breakaway because it was better suited for cold weather. You have a family indoor pool/hot tub and the indoor Seaplex. When you consider that in the winter you'r looking at around 2 to 3 sea days on a 7 night cruise where it can be bitter cold that is pretty significant.
