Oosterdam is looking tired

Does anyone know if the Oosterdam is due for a refit and update any time soon? We are just off the 10 day Southern Caribbean and she is in need of some love. While she was clean and seemed mechanically sound, the carpets were tattered and the decor was off by a few decades. Just my opinion.

April, when they're also going to ruin the best area of the Crows Nest by wasting its space on a silly art studio.

Sorry to hear these comments. When I cruised on O'dam several years ago I thought she was a most elegant ship. Haven't seen her recently, and now to hear that they are chopping up the Crow's Nest is not good news to me. I guess they need more revenue-producing square footage. I think I'd rather pay a little more. m--

Oosterdam has long had the most bilious carpets afloat and those dreadful blue boy benches. She does deserve a good redo. Sorry to hear about the Crows Nest changes - bad enough when they put the Library up there. Love the S-X-Y-Z cabins on the Vista ships, but there is not much to like elsewhere compared to her older, better endowed sisters.

How was the service onboard? On our Dec cruise it was not bad, but nowhere near as good as on the Zuiderdam we were on 9 months earlier.

It has been mentioned that O-Dam is scheduled for an extensive dry dock in April. They will be adding all the new suite upgrades and many other things at that time.

Cheers!

The items I can think of right off the top of my head are:

Rijksmuseum at Sea (port side of Crow's Nest)

Upgrades to all the Signature and Neptune Suites

Piano and Sports Bar become Billboard Onboard

Northern Lights becomes Gallery Bar

Explorers Lounge becomes Lincoln Center Stage

Lido Restaurant becomes Lido Market (if they didn't already work that in)

Extra rooms up top aft of Crow's Nest

Retreat Cabanas added on top of newly added staterooms

Obviously all the TYPICAL drydock stuff

and it wouldn't surprise me if there's a couple more things I'm not thinking of

How extensively do they tend to replace carpets during drydocks? I'm sailing on the Noordam in May and understand she underwent a drydock last April.

For the most part I think all public rooms are done.

Rooms and corridors on the stateroom decks are on more of an as needed approach I believe

I think Zuiderdam gets the prize for carpets. IIRC, they were bright orangy-red and purply-blue. After the understated decor of Cunard, Zuidy was a shock to my eyeballs! I made a survey of carpets on Oosterdam. They're all the same basic pattern with variations in the color palette. I found five different color variations. (Sea day with nothing to do but experiment with a new camera.)

Don't get me started on the strange collection of chairs!

Thank you for the information.

Sounds like the Captain's Corner going to go to make room for the Rijksmuseum.

Sure isn't going to be much of the original Crow's Nest left. JMO

We thought the service was quite nice. Our cabin Steward was charming and helpful. MDR staff was nice. I thought a couple of the people at the Front Desk were a little testy, but it just might have been a bad day. Most of the bar servers were quite nice as well. We spent most afternoons in the Crows Nest and the bartender and servers all knew what I drank after about day 3 :)

Zuiderdam is butt ugly, the ugliest ship I have seen. The ugliness goes beyond carpet color.

I think Holland America interiors are unattractive across the board.

We just got off the Oosterdam. The Crow's nest was pretty much unusable for most of the voyage due to Trivia and other gatherings. Pretty aggravating.

What is the Lincoln Center Stage?

What change is being made to the Piano Bar? Hopefully it will not be eliminated?

Pretty much, yes. :( The whole concept is being changed with the walls removed, space opened up to encompass the former Sports Bar/Casino Bar. Two pianos.

Gone are the days of an intimate area where a musician and the crowd had a party every night.

Really? I was just on her in September and kept thinking how incredibly tired and dated she looked.

Maybe they just replaced the light bulbs.

Seeing posts about a HAL ship looking tired always makes me snicker a little.

The passenger mix has to be factored in, don't you think?

I mean, most of your fellow pax look pretty tired, and you want to check for a pulse on a few.

It's enough to make the Koningsdam look like it's in dire need of a refit. ;)

We, with the gray hair, once were young like you .... and sooner than you think you'll be "tired" like us.

Basically we're proud to have gotten this far. We worked, raised our kids, paid taxes, saved what we could and now deserve something for ourselves.... like a cruise.

Do you think you younger folks would have as many choices of ships to sail without the "tired pax" keeping so many of them busy off season when school is in session for younger families?

Just sayin'

Why would you assume that I'm young? My kids have gray hair!:D

We're retired, raised our bunch of kids (who all now have a bunch of their own kids).

We're probably older than you are, but we're hardly "tired".

No, actually, we are tired of the entitlement attitude we see way too much of.
