Beware of "sold out" cruises - ours was cancelled

Recommended Posts

Oh NOOOO!!!! My 11 night Med cruise on Vision is showing sold out!!!! It's 16 months away in September 2017.....do I need to be worried?? There's a group of us going and arranging 3 weeks off from work isn't easy for us!

Virginia

The whole purpose of my post was to alert people to this possibility -- I've booked this cruise 6 months ago, and was monitoring it for a better cabin. One day there are plenty of cabins left in all categories, then suddenly it is marked "sold out"

It took RC a month to inform us that it was cancelled.

I'll keep an eye out. I too monitor the pricing weekly since we booked within 2 weeks of itinerary posted for sale. I noticed the 'Sold Out' last week and was surprised because a few days before they were still selling all cabin types.

So I called C&A and inquired and the rep looked up my sailing and said it was coded yellow meaning it was close to selling out and revenue management may have pulled remaining inventory to 'slow' down selling and open the rest up later. Somehow it's an RC tactic into their selling ways?

Another thing, shortly after booking these 4 cabins in March I sent in a reservation request to have bookings transferred to Costco because they offer a substantial OBC or Cost Cash card based on price of cruise. Well, they were denied because the "original" booking was more than 60 days out. We had booked onboard in September last year knowing we wanted to do a Med cruise in 2017 but those itineraries weren't out yet but we wanted to take advantage of the OBC and the super cheap deposit...$200 per cabin for 11 or more nights. I then called RC because we were within 60 days of this booking, but because the original date to the booking numbers were Sept 2015 we didn't qualify. Today I received an email for 1 of the 4 bookings saying our Exception Request for transfer was processed! So weird because it's been over a month since we were originally denied transfer. I'm going to give it a couple of days and see if the other 3 get transferred otherwise I'm going to call Sales Admin Dept.

This is happening with the Navigator 9 night Nov 2017 - Jan 2018.

Sailings are showing sold out but if you call in they will book it for you. I find it strange you cannot book online but you can call to book.

The other strange thing is the 5 night sailings during that time period are open to book as is the 9 night holiday sailing.

Ant insight on this ?

I had a Celebrity cruise go missing for 5 weeks and got the same 'script' from customer service. I was consumed, checking the site every day, reading all the posts on the roll calls and other threads. Our cruise was 18 months out.

Some people put much time into selecting the right cruise. Timing is everything for alot of us. while others can change plans on a dime.

Best advice I can share is to read as many posts as you can and get as many ideas from others. Someone might offer a solution that you didn't think of yourself.

That is what happened to us. Everything worked out well for us in the end because someone gave us an idea that worked for us that we didn't think of it on our own.

Our 9 night Navigator in March 2018 is showing Sold Out as well. I called C&A last night, and they had no idea. They only could tell me that they could still accept bookings and it was still an active sailing. I really wish I knew what was going on so I could rebook if needed.

Jewel out of San Juan, March 19th, 2017.

It was "sold out" for the last month.

When calling C&A I've heard the standard "shpiel" -- "voyage maintenance", "inventory", "itinerary re-evaluation", etc.

We have just until May 27th, 2016, to decide if we want to re-book at the prevailing cost --

Jewel 9th April, 2017 (one day before Passover... NO ! - plus a different itinerary than the one I've carefully picked)

Adventure 15th April, 2017 (one day before Easter... and NO -- Hello, RC, if I'd wanted to book Adventure, I wouldn't have booked Jewel !!!) - an itinerary not on my bucket list for the moment.

Both cruises at peak prices in terms of flights/hotels

No compensation for hotels and flights already booked......

Otherwise, we get a very "generous" compensation of 200$ for standard cabins, and 400$ for suites.

We are in the exact same situation but our cruise was the Jewel April 16, 2017. We also have the same two make up cruises to choose from, so now they are offering just two cruises for two totally cancelled cruises. I think that some people will not be able to be accommodated. The irony for me was this was part of a B2B2B that had been rescheduled from a cancelled cruise. I did book the Explorer last week as I was suspicious they were going to cancel. The hassle of changing ships and a layover day before the next two cruises may not be worth it though. We have time to figure it out.

Hmm... I had that Jewel cruise booked as the second leg of a B2B, but ultimately cancelled in favor of a Harmony/Freedom combo. Glad I did... Hope you get it all worked out.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It can save both RC a whole bunch of money and us disappointment.

I'm on your side...this sucks. But, I don't think it costs RCI any money to do this. Bob posted a link a while back to Royal's web page on reserving an entire ship. Part of the cost to the group reserving the ship is the rescheduling costs to the currently booked cruisers. Doesn't come out of RCI's pocket. Reserving ships before they are open to the public would save their customers disappointment.

Thanks. We'll still do the second and third legs that are the TA and then the Greek Isles. It's just the Explorer one that is still up in the air.

It is nerve wracking as so many sailings are closed. They all can't be chartered can they ?

With so many sailings affected and different ships, it sounds like a major change in itineraries coming.

We booked the 9 night Nov 24, 2017 cruise after Royal cancelled a Feb 2017 sailing. I will lose my sh!t if they cancel this one. I was on the phone today with the resolutions department getting my compensation offer applied to the new reservation and asked about the "sold out" status. They could only say that it was not "red flagged" which would be an indication that it would soon be cancelled and they would be blocked from selling those cabins even over the phone. The specialist said she would look further into it and call my TA tomorrow.

We are all sympathetic to your issues. But I would NEVER base my hotel and airline decisions on an RCI cancellation. RCI will reimburse you for those costs.

Sorry, if I read your statement correctly - but due to recent experience unless you book these items with Royal they absolutely do not reimburse you for hotel or airline costs outside of change fees.

That is really strange especially since we are booked on one of the one 9nights

That is the strange part.

Why would a huge corporation continue to sell cabins when they knowingly are trying to cancel and change to other itineraries

If I did that with my company I would go to jail:eek:

We had a Rhapsody sailing from Honolulu to Vancouver get canceled, and they only gave us two weeks to re-book (deadline Thanksgiving weekend). Some people on that cruise were also booked on the one from Sydney to Honolulu and that was also canceled. They gave us a choice of two. With the price guarantee or switching to another cruise for the OBC.

Still, not happy. DH sent an email to Adam Goldstein, and we got a phone call from his office explaining he was aware of our email.

Resolutions specialist applied my $200 obc but did not provide my TA with any info on the "Sold Out" status.

This morning I called C&A and eventually talked to someone in IT and was told it was a "glitch" and that it would be fixed within 24 hours. I just checked and the Nov 24 and Dec 8, 2017 9 night cruises are no longer showing "Sold Out". Maybe it's just a coincidence but in any case I am happy. :D

Used to show N/A and then it became Sold Out.

Had some cruises cancelled with little time to rebook but did get some OBC for the trouble. Also, had some with New departure ports and different Dates and # of nights changed. So, things happen and you have to be prepared for it not to be as you booked it sometimes. Ports are dropped or altered.......

We don't book any air until closer to a cruise as this has happened to us a few times now. Hotels we book are cancelable.
