We are new to O, on other cruise lines we can take money out in the casino, for a 5% fee and it gets charge to our account onboard. Does O do this? We have a large ship board credit and won't really us it other wise.

Actually you can. The Oceania FAQ's say:

What are the casino policies?

Guests must be 18 or older to enter or gamble in the casinos on our ships. US dollars are used. A 3% fee will be charged to your account if we receive a cash advance against your shipboard account. There is a $3,000 maximum per guest per day for these cash advances.

-

You will need to go to the casino cashier to do this.

The credit is from Oceania and is non refundable. That's why I want to get are cash advance against my account for the money I don't spend on board.

if it is from Oceania it is unlikely you will get to withdraw cash

it usually has a note on the bottom of the card ."not for use in the casino" or words to that effect

spend it in the spa or the shops or lose it

I think it may be a matter of interpretation;)

A cash advance for you or your TA not an incentive from O or from the TA as part of their incentives

I could be wrong

To be clear, the demarcation line is this:

If the OBC is promotional in nature, then it may only be used for the purchase of goods and/or services on the ship during the cruise.

Any unspent portion expires at the end of the voyage.

If the OBC was purchased, then it acts just as cash would.

As others have said depends where obc comes from, if O then you can't take it out at the casino only use it for onboard purchases, but if it comes from your TA at the end of the cruise O will give you a cash refund no charge for getting the cash. ON your statement it will say if it is or not the refundable. If it is then you get the cash back.

Not exactly. If it comes from the TA and is NOT promotional -- then it is treated as cash. Many TA's put together groups that give promotional OBC that is no treated as cash. You TA can advise you on that.

When booking, through an agent, and discussing on board credit, it is wisest to see if you can get as much of any credit to be in cash to you rather than letting the cruise line administer it.

Why if its the same amount... what advantage is it to get your credit either before or even after the cruise, in real cash money?

Well, if you take the cash and then while on board use your favorite credit card to settle the bill,( one which gets an airline or hotel points/miles) then you prosper by using the OBC funds to pay your credit card bill. You do this because otherwise the money would not be earning credits that only a credit card purchase would enjoy.

Dont think the mileage earned is too small to care about....it isnt... it adds up and grows and grows and pays you back in spades later. Too, using a credit card will insure your trip, and provide an expedient way and record of purchase... not to mention any refund ( as a prior posting has lamented)

Thanks. Looking forward to my first O cruise.

If you book have your agent put your booking in with a group.....That way your tips will be covered AND you will get an even larger OBC to use, without having to spend it on tips/gratuities !!!

I'm not sure what you mean. I have already booked. The agent indicated it was some sort of group rate with a substantial OBC so perhaps what you indicated has already been included.
