Hi All

Interesting tv programme here the other day about complaints from first time cruisers, auto tips big complaint as it is not high lighted as a cost at time of booking,

however what I thought stole the show was lady who was more up set that she did not find out that she could have cancelled tips until after she got home.

The OP appears to be a member of a society that doesn't normally tip in large amounts within their country. Now for wanting to cash out the prepaid gratuity and then pay cash... Come On.

Unfortunately, the people working for the original poster are not

from that country, and are working under a system where tips

are expected.

On the last cruise where I had prepaid gratuities, tips never

showed up on the folio at all.

There was no credit, and no debit; nothing that could be removed.

I think cancelling gratuties is a horrible way to cheat people working for 'you'.

Oh no, wait, a hypothetical horrible way...

Or, I'm asking for a friend...

I can't even imagine THINKING of doing such a thing!

That's kind of like going to a wedding with an open bar and asking for the money instead of the drinks.

Lol, very good example and just as Insane to think, someone probably has had the nerve to do that also, lol.

wow your a mind reader or have access to my onboard folio, i always leave auto tips on, i rarely tip extra. i asked the question in order to find out how free gratuties are credited onto your account. just because i asked does not mean i had any intention of doing this.

tipping is that not a big a deal in the UK because we have a Goverment that does take care of its citizens

My self paid, pre-paid gratuities did not show up on my account. I never saw anywhere on my account where gratuities were paid or not. All I had was the slip (voucher) that was in my room on embarkation day.

I was thinking perhaps they cash it out in the casino and then recharge them to earn double points on their charge card. A few years ago I read on the RCL boards where people did this to the tune of $1000 a day thus earning enough double points for another cruise.

I charge all I can on my Princess Charge card so I can earn double points. I offer to pay the deposits for friends too and get reimbursed from them of course. That's what came to my mind.

I never said anything about you or your folio.

I simply said that with the current system, the people working

on board are doing so in expectation of tips.

I seem to recall a thread a year or two ago (started by you) where

you lamented the son of a friend being paid so poorly by princess.

Hypothetically.

Hypothetical question. Can you withdraw the free gratuities credit by cashing back out at the casino

Really?

Princess is GIVING you something you are NOT paying for. No the gratuities are not added to your account to withdraw. They are added each day and with the promotion, immediately credited off. Reason why you asked?

In my experience nothing is FREE......Princess is not giving you anything but just trying to push sales....how do you know Princess pays the free gratuities to the crew anyway?

Not only would it be cheap and tacky, it would also be dishonest! This is just another person trying to milk (or should it it be steal) Princess for all its worth, even though that person knows better!

I do know better and most certainly wouldn't do it, I'm always keen to know downfalls in the system, how cons and tricks work etc, I guess because of my job it's just the way I think. I just like to come up with hypothetical scenarios, for example if someone said how do you smuggle liquor onto a cruise ship I would try and think of a way to do it, I wouldn't, but there you go. Ls I don't even drink alcohol

Just FYI, if the auto-tip were completely removed from all bookings, they'd be added to the cost of the cruise a la Australia. Either way, you pay for it. If crew were "paid a decent wage," your cruise fee would increase substantially. Be careful what you wish for. You might not like the consequences.

I'm not wishing for anything, I like the idea of auto tips with the option to remove, I honestly think it's that what keeps service standards so high.

Do I need to state again I had no intention of carrying this out.

Personally I would prefer it if the crew were "paid a decent wage"

Crew members get their contracts through recruiting agencies in their home country.

The recruiting companies get a cut of the wages, but do not get a cut of the tips.

If the tip amounts became part of the wages, then the crew would actually take home less and the recruiting agencies would earn more.

No it's not, I'm a genuine cc member, I'm not trying to create arguments just a interesting board.

As for free gratuities to me they are almost free, at the moment princess are offering a 14 night transatlantic on the crown for £549 with free gratuities, that's $780. Gratuities go up in cost for uk passengers if the £ weakens. At the moment gratuities on a 14 day sailing would cost me £127 so in effect that cruise is £422.

Plenty of crew members that I know deal directly with Napoli.

Depends on country of origin.
