Transportation from Rome to Venice

We are planning on taking the train from Rome to Venice this May. Is there a website to buy our tickets in advance ? Also are there different categories of seats?

There will be eight of us traveling from Venice to Rome in May. We debated long and hard about whether to fly or take the train. The train won hands down for many of the resons stated previously.

We found some great videos on You Tube with nice photos of the classes, and even one with bits of the scenery on the route. We did find the ticketing website a bit challenging - the ticket pricing kept changing, even within the same class of seats, we'd time-out before completing the transaction, and our credit cards were declined multiple times. (You are only allowed to purchase a maximum of 5 tickets at a time.)

I do have a question for those who have used the train; should we have a concern about luggage security onboard?

We're a bit paranoid when it comes to our luggage on trains in Europe.

A lot has to do with the configuration of the train carriage and how crowded it is.

Ideally, we'll place it on the rack above our seats. Option 2 is to uncomfortably place it on the floor beneath our seats. If the car isn't crowded, we'll try to snag a four seater table which gives more space. If we do put our luggage in a rack at the end of a carriage, we'll obviously try to get a seat nearby.

If you have large bags there's really no place for them other than the racks at the end of the car. There's really no concern about anyone rifling through your bag on the train, the concern would be someone stealing it and getting off the train. If you are worried about this, simply get up and stand by your things at each stop (there are only a few between Rome and Venice, five or six depending on the train).

If you have several bags you could bring a couple of flexible bike locks and lock two or three together, no one is going to be able to carry that off.

I don't think there is any additional space. Try to be quick about getting onto your specific carriage and stowing your bags.

That said, I wouldn't worry overmuch about bag theft on the fast trains. Those who buy a ticket aren't going to be the petty thieves that might hop on/off the regional trains. As eurocruiser said, just keep an eye on (or stand near) your bags during stops. There are only a few on the fast trains.

We did this trip last spring and it was great, very convenient. As first time travellers in Europe we were also concerned about our luggage, but we were able to see it from our seat, in the rack. Our backpack stayed with us. Enjoy, the fast train is a neat experience.
